I expect the same old crap. Siggy or Lennon on the left. One cant score and cant pass, the other can score but cant pass. No DM in MF but still insist on a high line and expose the defence to a pacey attacker. Have Townsend running an inverted channel and shooting blanks all afternoon. Soldado playing on the shoulder of the last defender all afternoon wondering why his team mates wont pass to him.

Man City are going to tear us another one...maybe three.

I'm not fond of Sandro and Capoue in the same starting eleven. It's difficult enough for creativity. Sandro is a definite for me. Townsend needs to be rested or put on the left hand side instead of Siggurdson. I quite like yojambo's lineup
----------Lloris----------

---Kaboul--Dawson--Vertonghen

-----Sandro-------Capoue

Lamela------------------Townsend

--------Eriksen--Holtby--------

--------Adebayor----------

We don't have enough fullbacks, and City don't have enough wingers. I know how bad Townsend has been, but he's still been better than sigurdsson and a left footed player on the left would help a 3-6-1. Sandro and Capoue would add defensive steel and allow Kaboul and Vertonghen to cover wide whilst they dropped deep to help Dawson Defensively (when we don't have the ball). Eriksen and Holtby centrally should give us more creativity, especially with Lamela and Townsend on the wings. I know that Adebayor was simply dreadful last season but Soldado or Defoe is simply not working at the moment, ad vs Man City would be a great game for Adebayor to prove himself.

City only play through the middle and really lack width, so Sandro, Capoue, Eriksen, Holtby should be able to match them in the centre.

Blaugrana, read this: http://www.oneworldsports.com/stories/depth-analysis-3-6-1-formation

I honestly feel that 3-6-1 is the future of football and would suit our team perfectly. The 3-6-1 is all about pressing high up the pitch with a very active defence. It is extremely potent on the counter-attack, but also dominates possession through playing so many central players. It is reliant on hard working wingers however, as well as defenders who are good with the ball at feet, but we have those in Kaboul, Chirices, and Vertonghen.

High line plus a striker who plays on the shoulder of a last man does not compute.

Walker - Struggling a bit, but have no better.
Paulinho - Out of form, but in this match I prefer his defencive abilities.
Townsend - Early sub with Chadli/Lennon if he's not on his toes.

Set out to defend and make rapid/quick counter attacks.

Sandro eats opposition with the ball. Passes to Holtby, does some snazzy pass to Townsend/Lamela/Eriksen. Some crazy skills/speed later with a screamer or an assist to Soldado. Having a laugh at the top of the table by Christmas.

I think the trick is that if townsend is going to play, then he must play on the left so he can run to the by line and whip in crosses to soldado with his strong foot, and HOPEFULLY this would also prevent him from taking so many shots as he shouldnt always want to cut in and shoot with his weaker foot. So for me its

Lloris
Walker Kaboul Verts Rose (if rose injured swap him for verts and put chiriches at cb with kaboul)
Sandro Paulinho
Lamela Eriksen Townsend (Lamela MUST start)
Soldado

That's the midfield and attack I'd go for too. You could maybe drop Eriksen for Paulinho to make us even more physical in the centre.

But mainly I like Sandro and Capoue together. Maybe it would be defensive overkill, but it's worth a try. And more importantly I want Lamela to be rewarded for his fine display on Thursday. And for Townsend to play on the left. Nobody else is left footed, therefore we completely avoid the left side of the field when we're attacking.

Ade on the bench, unless he can't walk.

I like this side alot and would play this against most teams, i think it will have guile and intelligence, and personally hope AVB is aiming for this side.
Against City away though, i would swap out paul for capoue.

Controversial perhaps, but I'd go Xmas tree, or a bastardisation thereof. We play far more possession football, so I think that Eriksen and Lamela behind the striker would hopefully lead to a little more penetration (ooo er).

Lack of genuine wide boys compensated for by the full backs bombing past a slightly narrower midfield.

The eagle-eyed among you will notice the inclusion of a sensational new striker.*

AVB needs to pick the players that he signed. He obviously signed them for a reason (or at least approved them) so not having them in the team now that they've been here for a couple of months is daft. The only two areas of contention for me are Sandro or Capoue and Holtby or Eriksen. Maybe for this one I'd go with the two more defensive options of Sandro and Holtby, but either option should be fine.

Obviously this is dependant on injuries but I'd go:

Lloris

Walker Kaboul Vertonghen Rose

Sandro/Capoue Paulinho Holtby/Eriksen

Lamela Soldado Chadli

It's an interesting line up, but I don't think the wide men will work. I watch lots of Serie A where 3-6-1 and 3-5-2 are commonly used. The 3-5-2 is my favourite formation and, when done well, is deadly. Juve last night showed a perfect example of it against Napoli both offensively and defensively when Napoli regained possession. Juve also went 3-6-1 last year a few times with Marchisio playing off the striker.

I think we do have the right players for it and I've posted my version of a 3-5-2 team in the "Our Best 11" thread. I would actually play Walker and Rose as the wing backs because they have the stamina to do that role. If anyone, I dropped Townsend as he doesn't suit the formation.

Nonetheless, I don't think we'll ever employ it in the near future. Firstly, because AVB hasn't ever used it and probably doesn't care for it; and secondly, it's something you've got to work hard on through pre-season and practice. A 3 man defence with 2 wing backs is a massive change from the standard flat back 4 that we always use and it'll take a lot of time to get players used to it. It can be done in the EPL though - both Martinez and Rodgers have done it well.

Or you could see it as giving walker and chiri total freedom to get right up to the corners and get behind them, like FBs should be under this system.

Lamela, eriksen, townsend can rotate across the supporting attack line freely and pull players about and cause havoc. Sandro sit and protect and capoue box-to-box it.

Also allow kaboul to rage forward and have sandro or capoue to sit in and let him go.

This gives us the strength and flexibility we will need in this game.

My bench would be: Brad, Daws, Fryers, Holtby, Paul'o, Dembele, Kane
