White at LB as we play it is not a bad shout. He's a CM by trade so receiving the ball in the midfield is not totally outlandish to him. I'd even be interested to see if in the future Ange tries using athletic CMs in his fullback roles as a natural progression of the system. That's not for here though.

U21s look stupidly strong. I wonder if we keep them together until the new year before sending a few out on loan.

The U21s do look strong, but then on paper they looked strong last season - and they finished in the relegation spots.

Since then we’ve let half a dozen players go - none of whom were donkeys and only four of whom were regular starters - and not really brought anyone else in, apart from Phillips. Of course some of last season’s players have developed physically and in terms of experience, but we have not yet drawn much on this season’s crop of Academy graduates, at least not those who weren’t already integrated into the U21s.

Yes, last season’s campaign was disrupted by injuries, a lot, and by idiotic suspensions, but the real difference seems to be that the lads have their tails up. This I am inclined to put down to Conte and Postecoglou’s very different attitudes to the development set up. That and that the U21s seem to have embraced Ange’s more positive tactics.

Any word of some of the lads securing loans? If we retain this size of first team squad then the likes of John, Scarlett, Lyons-Foster and Paskotski are unlikely to get a look in. I guess only Scarlett of the four is likely to be around the squad with a chance of getting meaningful playing time. Do we have a member of staff responsible for this at the moment?

A question for the youth experts:

Why is Brooklyn Lyons-Foster still at the club? By my maths, not only is he not eligible for the U21 list this season, but he wasn't even eligible for it last season! He's had no loans that I can recall, doesn't appear to be anywhere remotely near the first team picture and turns 23 in a few months' time. This is his fifth season in the development squad (on top of the two he would have spent as an apprentice in the U18s).

We seem to do this with certain players every now and again - Anthony Georgiou springs to mind as another example, though he at least got taken on a few pre-season tours. Yet we also seem perfectly happy to cut other players loose at much younger ages, and to my (unexpert) eye there doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason around which players get cut loose and which players get these highly extended "apprenticeships".

Just wondering if any of the more knowledgeable posters can shed any light on it....

It was Troy Archibald-Henville, I think? Don't know if he's still in the role or not though.

It’s an interesting question. Yes, he’s had injuries so that could be a factor in giving him longer, but so had Bowden and Mathurin who were let go (and who both at one time looked terrific prospects). My guess is he’s a really good egg who sets an example for the younger lads, a sort of development squad Eric Dier.

Or maybe someone on the coaching staff really sees something in him. Remember when Simon Dawkins was allowed to train with us after being let go? Tim Sherwood who had just come into the development role took a look at him and offered him a contract. We got a fee for him and he went on to have a decent career.

Think you can add Devine to those who might get a look in , very much depends on what happens by Sept 1st and what plans Ange has for the younger players . Think the Ange positivity and willing to take a risk is spreading throughout the whole squad from top to bottom.

Good win for the U21s. Did anyone manage to catch the game?

Particularly keen to know how Dorrington and Phillips got on as CB pairing and how Devine did. Will be nice to have multiple prospects who have realistic chance of competing for first team, or at very least we can get decent money for like we did with Pritchard.

No, just spursplay. There is a YouTube account that shows highlights of some academy games, it showed the highlights of our 5-0 win last week against Man City.
Completely forgot I had spurs play, mainly got it to see pre season under Ange, but will definitely go check out the u21 games. Feel like I have got quite distant from our youth teams and watching our key prospects. Not sure how much is related to our recent choices of manager.

Just watched the highlights of U21s two wins to start the season. Hugely impressive, 5-0 over City and 4-1 over Newcastle. Yago Santiago looks outstanding on the left wing. Scored 3 I think it is, across the 2 games and looking absolutely full of confidence. One to keep an eye on for breaking through perhaps?

Phillips & Dorrington look class. Phillips a little laid back maybe but has pace to recover. Dorrington ended up in the oppo box several times & played a through ball that should have resulted in a goal.
Donley looked really busy & skilful, Iago Santiago had the knack of being in the right place at the right time, but I'm not sure he's strong enough yet.

No youth loans as yet . One week to go. Is this a definite policy or are we just messing about .
some of these lads badly need a loan. The chance of Devine getting any first team minutes isn’t high with the amount in the first team squad.
Alfie has seen 3 of his team mates in the England under 19 squad get prem lge transfers. Granted they are @bout a yr older than him but they have all played plenty of first team football.

Keeley, Lyons-Foster, Paskotsi, Craig, John, Devine, Santiago, Soonsupp-Bell, Scarlett and Parrott should all be priorities for loans. This is both for their own development but also for the sake of the younger lads coming through. We have had a good crop out of the Academy but it’s hard to see them getting that many chances with this lot in front of them.

They could really do with going back to the old rule of closing the loan deadline a bit later than the transfer deadline.
