We literally set up the same way last season at got top 4 with a worse squad.

"controlling games" is also a load of shit tbh. City "controlled" the game last year and we beat them with more shots on target. City have controlled many games this year and come up short, as have Liverpool. The control of games is bollocks if the team is set up well to counter it. We've done it plenty of times.
Controlling a game is important. Having possession is not the same thing as controlling a game.

While I wouldn't say we're were in total control against Marseille before the sending off, Marseille weren't either. The game was quite balanced.

Marseille were not threatening. We were actually finding spaces further up the field but decision making was lacking, too many poor balls.

But yeah, control is important but possession isn't control. A lot of people don't understand that for sure.

Surely people stoped believing that dominating possession is in any way a clear indicator of a team playing better by 2014ish.

It was not one of Kane's worst ever performances. Far from it. I don't think he played well but was by far our most successful forward in keeping the ball up, some things didn't work out but seen much worse from him.

Marseille are a good team, this was a good win. The performance meh. But let's not go overboard.
It's always the latest game which is the winner in the 'that was the worst' stakes. One year ago he was putting in much worse performances. So were the team.

We were in the safe standing area right next to them - absolute animals, I never knew they were like that. Admittedly, we have our share of idiots, many of whom ran over to provoke them as much as possible, it was total chaos!
Marseille have one of the worst reputations of all clubs. Fans of other teams who I know have been there to games wouldn't ever go again. It's a city with a bad reputation, though I personally have never been there

It's a wonderfully vibrant chaotic city, but certainly not everyone's cup of tea.

French football has a problem I'm afraid. It's not just Marseille. Unfortunately, it has been getting worse and worse recently too.

Unfortunately, we are likely to see more of this. English fans still have a reputation for being up for a bit of a scuffle and you get a lot of hooligans from other countries who see such ties as a way to have it out with these famous English hooligans.

With what's been happening with the national team I fear that club football has also been tarnished with that reputation and you will probably see more European ultra groups act up.

The thing is we have to predict this. Particularly against clubs like Marseille.

Think we need a Cat D price list on ticket prices for Champions League group games, Spurs shots on target 2 , Marseille shots on target 1 , hardly value for money on entertainment value . Attendance 57 367 was it worth it ?

FFS. We won and for me that would be worth it. Enjoy the win....
It's the stadium and feeling of being home away from home.

What is 'control' in a game is down to.perspective . I believe that we chose to control the game by letting them believe they had control where as they were shut down when needed.
Each game is different, and the opponent can't nit be taken for granted, hence the beautiful game. Even with Papa Smurf in charge we beat these fuckers .

after a piss poor first half there’s no way we could’ve been worse. Based on this display and the six prem games this season I honestly think it will be an achievement to get past the group stages in CL. We look like a side lacking any real ideas, and happy to pass it around at a snails pace hoping for a break. Conte’s Inter side had purpose and played decent football, this Spurs side is mind numbingly boring.
Not sure what instructions are given pre game but we are seriously shit in the first half of games.
Glad that we won the game but the sending off helped us and without it it's doubtful that we win the game.
The team are certainly having a lot of luck and that is helping to paper over the cracks which I suspect a very good city team will expose.
I don't get the dithering around with the ball at the back, the lack of any creation within the team and what has happened to son, he has literally gone to shit can't pass or score he is woefully out of form.
At the moment we are riding our luck but that will come crashing down soon if the team doesn't sort itself out such a chore to watch us.

I agree that we're not playing well, but if the player hasn't made that challenge was it doubtful that Son would have scored or that, if he had, at 1 0 up was it doubtful that we would have won the game? I don't think the sending off was unearned luck. We created a very good chance to score.

Apart from getting soaked being rained on at the station everything else went swimmingly last night. First half we didn't trouble them enough but then again despite all their huffing and puffing they didn't trouble at all. We play with wingbacks but first half you wouldn't know it as we really didn't use them well, we seemed to keep going through the middle where we were outnumbered and eventually sat too deep meaning the ball beyond got picked up by their defender.
Second half we pushed further forward played to the wingback and the ball beyond went past their backline, we did that a couple of times before the ball beyond for Sonny which caused the last man foul and the red card. It wasn't the red card that led to us playing that way it was playing that way that led to the red card, early as it was after the break.
Marseille broke up our play after that by simply going down every time we tackled them and the referee fell for it but they couldn't keep us out all game and what a couple of beauties those crosses for Richarlison to score and boy he's got a leap on him hasn't he!
A good 3 points to start the group and we deserved it.
Still not as smooth as we can be and not quite clicking perfectly yet so lots to look forward to.

Still in the transfer rumours with the Harry Kane thread?

I don't understand it, not sure I ever will. I can understand perhaps that after we've signed a player it takes a little while for admin to move the player thread over but our own players should never be in the transfer rumours section

Its not sustainable mate. We need to control games in order to win comfortably and not rely on the opponent's profligacy in front of goal. Yes it can last for a 4-5 games but to do this the whole season, it would be foolish to think it is sustainable.
Conte won the title in Italy with similar possession stats to what we have right now.

Not saying we'll win the league, but control through possession doesn't guarantee wins. If you let the opposition have half of the ball but limit them to very low percentage chances you can still win consistently.
