After the end of last season and the summer under Conte I just can't get my head around how so many of our elite players can be so out of form.

It's bonkers.

They should be flying.

We will need to win our home games and beat Frankfurt away. We probably had to do that anyway but the problem with our group is that everyone is beating everyone, so there's no margin for error.

One thing is for sure, unless we improve our away form in Europe immediately we can forget about the CL. 6 away defeats in a row is piss poor.

The problem I'm noticing is since Perisic has come into the team Son hasn't been at his best. I wonder if there is an issue with them making the same runs or crowding each other?
Then I look at the RW and think Spence would 100% invade Dekis space on the pitch with his marauding runs forward down the line. Emerson and Doherty less so because they do come inside a fair bit.
Just an observation
Great observation!

Perisic quite often cuts inside so he’ll be getting in Sons way or he goes by his man and loops a cross, neither of which really give son anything to work with.

Son does seem to play a bit better when Sess is there. Good tactical observation.

Although part of it for Sonny is just good old fashioned lack of confidence imo until he gets his goal and also he needs to get used to competition for places, he’s rarely had that.

To back up my point. Today only 3/7 of the favourites won their CL tie. Those were; Inter, who played the worst club in the competition; Bayern; and Liverpool, who won through a late goal. Not a single favourite won a tie away from home.

The biggest shock wasn't Sporting beating us, but the crazy game were Porto lost 4-0 at home against club brugge. Which has to be one of the craziest score lines in the competition for a long time.

Furthermore, Leverkusen beat Atletico Madrid. Atletico have had a reasonable start to the season, losing against Villarreal and drawing against Real Sociedad are not unexpected results and were they sit on the table is more a reflection of a harder start than most rather than anything more. Leverkusen are in the relegation zone. I would say that is much more a surprising result.

Frankfurt v Marseille is a little bit of a shock as Marseille are playing well this season and were at home, but they are fairly evenly matched teams so not a great suprise.

The point is, it's not that surprising we lost the match today. It's just the CL. Welcome back. The only time we haven't had these kind of results in the CL was the second Poch season, were we were the best team in the tournament in the group stage, only to then go out in the last 16. But generally these sorts of things happen, particularly when away from home.
Everyone knows this, you don't have some special insight.

For most it's cathartic to have a moan after a bad performance.

Don't take it so seriously.

If I’m honest I’m glad this wake up call came in this game and not the league. We have enough games to still qualify and top the group.
I want us to really make some headway with the league. Liverpool look off it this season, we could really make a challenge.
Big bounce back against Leicester on Saturday needed
Leicester haven’t won atall this season and only hve a point, I think dr Tottenham will be rearing it’s head! 1-1.

To cocede one goal in stoppage time may be regarded as misfortune
To concede two looks like carelessness. (Oscar Wilde)

Poor show all round staff and management.

It's not a special insight. I write as much bullshit as everyone else. It's just stating something obvious. But forget the post match moan, it's the pre-match confidence that irritated me. And if people come into these games thinking it's an easy win it's logical that they would overreact to loses.

Maybe not with this group, but I was half expecting us to go out at this stage anyway. The squad isn't quite there to compete in it imo. Even if we get through I think we'll be out the round after.

But then at that point it hardly makes a difference to concede two, therefore it's always more likely. If you are pushing for an equaliser, particularly with little time left you are going to be very exposed. It would be idiocy of the extreme to have much of a care at all if they get a second.

The players are mentally fragile, always have been & doesn’t look like changing anytime soon.

Our squad is not quite there to compete with the likes of Sporting? Do they have a single player in their team who’s better than Kane, Son, Richy or Deki? Is any of their midfield better than Bentancur or Bissouma? Do they have a better defender than Romero?

Our squad, for several years now, has been way better than the performances our managers have been able to get out of them. In my opinion, of course.

Everyone beating everyone is only bad for us if we care about the Europa League. If everyone is beating everyone then we need less points to get through the group.

For what it's worth I think Sporting and us are still favourites to qualify, and suspect that they will do Marseille too. I think Marseille are pretty blunt going forwards and suspect they might even finish bottom, Frankfurt can batter teams on their day and can beat anyone on their day but are far too inconsistent. We are second in the group as it is, but we are hardly in a worrying situation.

Losing against your biggest rival away is not unusual and nothing to seriously worry about. When we reached the CL final we had 2 points in the first 3. That's when it gets seriously worrying. I'm this group 9 points will be enough to qualify us.

Possibly. We could do with Marseille falling away. Well it’s better if there are two clubs that lose every game, rather than a group where everyone is beating everyone else. I’m not worried but unless we improve our away form in Europe we will be out sooner rather than later.

They should be considering the pre season fitness regime.
What I don't get is this not taking the game to the opponent.
All we do is sit deep let them come onto us and hope we can find a lucky pass that exploits the space rubbish.
Become of how deep we and that our frontline our not able to hold the ball up it just comes back again.
They struggle to keep clean sheets and if Romero is injured then that's on us not going for another CB which we all knew was needed.
I've seen some suggestions that we aim to control the game but again we are not controlling any games, this is the same crap that we had under Jose and Nuno try to score early and hang on for 80 mins garbage.
