Even a Chelsea draw with Norwich wouldn't help sadly because of their goal difference, they'd have to lose every game for us to catch them. United having a sudden, total collapse then drawing with Leicester is probably the best chance, and we've got to fight to win every game and see what happens, but it is realistically well under 1% as much as it's a fun possibility to entertain!

So there is still a chance :finger:

Not really they have 5 more goals than us. We will need to win 3 games they would need to lose 2 games. that's 5 goals. So right now our goal difference is in effect the same. We actually would have a slight advantage goal difference wise, because this is minimal possible goal difference. Namely, for us to finish ahead of Chelsea we would have 3 opportunities to add more than one goal, and they would have two opportunities to concede goals.

The way the fixtures pan out between the four teams above us, top 6 is certainly possible, albeit difficult as there are several intra 4th-7th games. I’d suggest anybody dreaming of better than that, however, needs to lay of the sauce.

Keep hanging on to that dream kids lol.

Fk me. Taking optimism to a whole new level.
I have no optimism at all, just been updating a table for the chances of CL place, and going through the possibilities.I don't think anyone actually thinks top 4 is realistic!!

Talking about what the possibilities are is not the same as thinking it possible, or being optimistic!

I know this might not have been specifically directed towards me, but the actual post that I have been referencing, in its most optimistic prediction has us finishing 6th (assuming we win all our games) while my 'realistic' prediction has us finishing 7th (again, assuming we win all our games). I don't see anyone dreaming anything more than 6th. Maybe, one comment which seemed more in a sort of jokey tone said as much.

I don't think we will get top 4 for the simple reason that we aren't scoring enough goals.
We haven't scored more than 2 goals in a single game since the re-start. I can't see this changing in the next 3 games.
We have 2 away games and home to Leicester; none of these games scream goals galore.

I think we are becoming more and more a Mourinho team: we are defending deeper and making less defensive mistakes, but offensively we are completely reliant on Son and Kane.

I can't wait to see the end of this season and hope that Mourinho can bed the new signings better; I still have no clue what Gedson Fernandes does, and I hope Nombele can climb out of the hole. We need serious help in FBs (can't resolve without buying) and goals; and i can't see us buying big given Covid. Time for Mourinho to do something..

We aren't getting top 4 because we can't get enough points lol. Chelsea need to collapse, if they do then Wolves get a win under their belt. Leicester need to collapse, but if they do then Sheffield UTD and Manchester UTD get a win under their belt.

Sheffield UTD collapse??? Leicester get a win and are out of our reach. Wolves collapse?? Chelsea get a win and are out of our reach. There is too much to do. The best we can hope for is Leicester getting 0 from 9 with Sheffield and Wolves drawing a couple of games (excluding Sheffield UTD vs Leicester).

Here's the only way it can work.

Chelsea lose all games = 60
Leicester lose all games = 59
UTD win all games = 68
Wolves beat Chelsea but draw to Burnley and Palace = 60
Sheffield UTD beat Leicester but draw to Everton and Southampton = 59
Spurs win all their games = 61

If Sheffield UTD were to win two and draw one we would be ahead on goal difference. We would need Chelsea to drop points to Norwich tonight and hope that Liverpool have that fire in them to get 100 points in a season. Wolves fans aren't optimistic about their chances of breaking down Burnley, they have +2 GD on us too so.

TBH though I can easily see Sheffield UTD getting 9 points from 3 games and finishing on 63. Wolves winning all their games and finishing on 64 and Chelsea beating Norwich to finish on 63. It does make the final day interesting for those two if Liverpool do beat Chelsea as it would be a winner takes all match.

I don't mention UTD. They will probably take 3rd at a canter.

You're right, it wasn't aimed at you directly.

You need to plus and minus goal difference, depending on games won and lost. So if we need to win three games, we get a +3 goal dif, if we need wolves to lose one they get -1. So we are one tottenham win and one wolves loss away from matching their goal difference. We also have better goals scored, so at the moment we actually have better goal difference than Wolves, and are level with Chelsea though behind on goals scored. Does that make sense?

Would be lovely if Chelsea dropped points tonight. 61 points now and could see em lose to Liverpool and Wolves.

Sadly Norwich is a free 3 points.

Unless Norwich mount a comeback, we'll need United and Leicester to draw with each other while losing their other games

Btw it is pretty pathetic that only 2 teams will now finish with over 70 points this season. Last time any less than 5 clubs hit that figure was 15/16 with 3.
Alternatively it means that apart from Liverpool and city. The rest of the teams (barring Norwich) have been fairly even. And any team can beat another on their day. There isn’t the massive disparity in clubs now.

Exactly. It always annoys me when people compare points tallies over different seasons.
