At least I can save my energy hanging on to the top 5 pipe dream that re-emerged last night now. Likelihood is it would have fallen down anyway.

Leicester win on Thurs would be great now, Chelsea dropping out of the CL would be brilliant. I'll also be more relaxed about the Leicester game knowing that if we lose it could screw them over!

Why should anyone comply with financial fair play

The problem with City is that everyone knows they over-inflate their sponsorship deals, as despite being elite on the pitch they are miles away from the likes of Utd, Pool, Bayern, Barca and Real off it (and yet get comparable sponsorship deals). Unfortunately the regs don't allow them to punish it. UEFA obviously jumped on something a bit frivolous to punish them, as they have been scrutinising them for years. CAS obviously looked at this incident in isolation and didn't think it was strong enough to justify a ban.

So what do we think will qualify for Europa now? 7th? Have we put our name down for the intertoto Cup yet?

If Arsenal don't win the FA Cup, then 5th and 6th get you into the Europa League Group Stage, and 7th sees you enter in the Second Qualifying Round (out of four). If Arsenal do win it, then they get the Group Stage spot alongside 5th place, and 6th gets you into qualifying.

The good news with qualifying is that it's shorter than normal - due to the pandemic it's being played as single legs, so 3 games rather than 6. The bad news is that it's also delayed until September, so it'd be three extra midweek games during the season. Assuming we made the group stage then we would play for the first 9 midweeks of the season in a row - and if we're still entered into the League Cup, up to 3 of those would be double midweeks! (Premier League Sunday, League Cup Tuesday, Europa League Thursday, Premier League Sunday).

(And no, Ndombele still won't get on the pitch)

Let's win out then! I bet a friend we'd finish above Leicester at the start of the season. It's the only excitement I've got left. I'd all but given up after the Bournemouth game.

As far as I'm concerned we are either making the money from the Champions League by finishing in the top 4 or we might aswell be one place above relegation. 6th is nothing to celebrate at all especially with the shower of shit we've churned out this year.
Good for you.

I’d rather finish as high as possible and top six is still better than not top six.

When you think we could finish top six with all thats gone on it says to me we are not as bad as portrayed by the media or as bad as the media would like us to be . if you cast your mind back to incidents that could have changed games / scores / results from the start of the season which includes penalties not given for us and the Man until penalty plus Var errors the games I think that cost us unfairly were if my memory is correct working back to the start of the season games like Bournmouth / S Unt / Man Unt /Burnley / Norwich / Saints / Watford
I will not itemise each incident but the avid followers will know the games I am talking about and if given the rub of the green we would comfortably be in the top four and all this with us being poor and that is why I believe that next season when Jose gets 3 or 4 players in that he sees as essential we will be right up there and far from being gloomy I am optimistic that we can achieve something next year .
More so because Jose has said that he knows there will not be shed loads of cash and that he has players in mind .
I take that to be free transfers and players in the last year of their contract and relegated teams players thus making them cheaper and within our budget. Roll on next season COYS

5 & 6th at the moment get Europa. It will go down to 7th if Arsenal don't win the FA cup. If they do then will be 5/6th and Arsenal in Europa.

Dont you meant as long as Arsenal dont get to the final.

FA Cup winner gets Europa, if they are already in european competition via their league position (CL/EL) then it goes to the runner up. If the runner up is also already in european competition via their league position (CL/EL) then that spot goes to the league

I'm not sure that's remotely correct.

Plus TV revenue, which was around 20m euro for Arsenal and Chelsea last year. Plus coefficient money which would be another 3-3.5

Plus ticket sales and match day food and drink sales - if fans are allowed back in stadiums next season (albeit at greatly reduced capacity).

Plus the difference in PL prize money this season - some £20m between 17th and 6th.

So.....apart from the prize money, the group stage win money, the group stage draw money, the group stage group winners money, the group stage group runners up money, TV revenue, ticket sales, match day food and drink sales, PL merit money, and the extra route to CL qualification..........

.......what has finishing 6th over 17th ever done for us?

With apologies to Monty Python.

No longer the case:

If the FA Cup winners qualify for the UEFA Champions League or the UEFA Europa League via the domestic league or European performance, by Regulation 3.04,[6] the highest ranking non-qualified league club qualifies, taking the lowest Europa League spot (the League Cup spot – the League Cup inherits the League spot, and the League inherits the FA Cup spot).

Really not that opposed to a season or two in the EL at all!

I think the position that our team is currently in is a state of transition and regeneration, and the Europa League gives us a fantastic opportunity to do that...
With the PL and CL, every game is such high stakes, and rarely allows teams to experiment with young players and rotate...which I think has contributed to our large quantity of injuries over the last few years due to lack of depth..

The Group Stages (and arguably the last 32) gives you 6-8 games to really integrate youngsters into the team...the likes of Parrot, Skipp, Tanganga, Cirkin, Sess, White, allll could see some serious minutes and get more confidence and skill in their game.
It means as well that those long trips to Tbilisi, Moscow, Baku etc..gives us an opportunity to leave Kane, Son, Gio etc at home and give them rest that they need.

Looking at how Arsenal got Saka, Willock,
AMN, Nelson etc into the team, the EL played a big part in that...

Realistically, we are not good enough at the moment to win the CL, so having a good go at the EL for the next couple of years is an ideal situation for us I think!
