Anything been said about the players missing? I guess Skipp and Tanganga weren't ready for action yet after injuries, but Ndombele, Lamela, Doherty, Aurier, etc.?

I never make any judgements on players in pre-season. Although Dele Alli was someone who shone and never looked back that season he broke through.

Lots of youth potential to fill the deadwood squad members

One thing that stood out to me in terms of patterns was a CM dropping deep, splitting the CBs and then trying to play in one of the runners. Dele was doing it 1st half, white after he came on.

Can't take anything from it in terms of players though. It's just about fitness.

First trophy of the season done......
In all seriousness it was nice to see us play again but didn't get that much out of it especially after 60 mins when we put a new team out.
Niles John looked comfortable at this level. He wanted the ball and was tidy.

Dane Scarlett was our brightest player. He was always looking to make runs off the ball and was just demonstrating great awareness. For me he looks like he can come into the first team squad and contribute.

Winks (albeit I am biased) I think now in my mind was poor. I just don't know what he does. He looked slow on the ball and he adds nothing defensively or offensively. I really hope he gets a transfer before the start of the season.

What a life it is as a footballer, though.

Every day you go and play football with your mates, with your whole week focused on being super fit and feeling great. Personal chefs, state of the art gyms and facilities, your pick of basically any woman you could ever want. Once or twice a week you get to play a proper football match.

Every day you finish "work" by about 3pm and can do whatever you like for the rest of the day. Play videogames, go shopping, get a soapy titwank from your supermodel girlfriend. When the season ends you get weeks and weeks off in the summer - not for any other reason than to just go and do whatever you like, go on holiday, party, have fun, relax. You can get properly fucked up if you want because you've always got pre-season to get fit again.

And you do all this for vast, gigantic, impossible to imagine amounts of money. So much money that you can do literally anything you want and never have to think about finances.

And then eventually when your career comes to an end you either go into coaching and have a very similar lifestyle all over again, but with way less pressure on you, or you go and do a few hours of chatting shit on tv every week and get paid a fortune for that as well.

What a life.
That’s not quite true. Most players don’t go on to be coaches or pundits- they don’t need to because they have earned enough money to retire by 20.

I used to go to lots of these preseason games and watch tepid runarounds so the best thing now is that you can actually get a stream and be bored in your garden watching on an iPad instead. That’s progress.

It’s a fitness exercise nothing more.

Don't really know what people were expecting from the first game of pre season? There's always multiple subs. It's more about getting minutes than shape and systems. Bar the slack pass back I thought there was some nice stuff from the lads who came on. Clarke especially. White pinging a couple of balls.

Winks was better than some are making out. Dele showed intensity. Bergwijn was the only one I thought wasn't great at all. But again first game, so not writing anybody off.

Whatever Dele is I just don’t think he is a proper midfield player. Either play him off Kane or loan him out to see if he can get going again.

I don’t think anyone will put up with him playing only one position though, at this point in his career, so it’s either this, LW, or er CF. He probably knows he has commit to one of the three, and this is it.

None of our starters played - maybe Lucas.

Of the players looking for first team minutes, most looked the part. I’ll wait for a few more pre-season games, but right now it looks like formation will be 4 at the back.

As noted above, I liked the movement of the CMs with one dropping deep to help build from the back.

Scarlett and John look like promising youngsters. Maybe some time in the Europa Conference League or even a decent loan.

Hopefully next time out we see a few starters mixed in.

TBF only a small ratio manage to achieve that lifestyle, and you have to work your bollocks off from the age of 10 in order to make it.

I reality there's hundreds of 'em - League 2 players earn thousands a week - and it remains a ridiculous life.
