With Dembele and Wanyama. Its so negative.

We turned a corner playing 343 winning well and scoring lots of goals. So why have we reverted back to 4231. We almost lost to Wycombe and scored 1 goal against Sunderland and Middlesbrough.

If we play 4231 against Liverpool we will lose.

Exactly, he doesn't seem to trust Wimmer either anymore so we basically can't do it with an injury to any of the back 5 except maybe Walker.

Yeah I meant to say vertonghen as well. He quite obviously doesn't trust wimmer so we just don't have enough centre backs to play 3.

3-4-3 seemed a good system but a lot of people seem to forget that all our success the last 2 seasons has been 4-2-3-1 and have 3 games with 3 at the back so let's not get carried away I'm sure poch knows when to use it and when not

Is the right answer.

The formation wasn't why we only scraped a win against Wycombe or why we drew with Sunderland and only scored one against Middlesbrough.

Against Villa, we had to change back to 4-2-3-1 to get the win and against Man City we were very luck not to lose heavily. No system is perfect all of the time, and without Rose and Verts, we would struggle more with 3-4-3, than we are doing at 4-2-3-1.

I think there's too much obsession with formations.

Poch saw our quck wingers weren't perfomring well so went to a back three allowing Rose and Walker to get forward even more.

Now Rose is injured he has gone back to 3 behind the striker as Davies does not offer the same width as Rose.

It's a case of managing the squad and the situation correctly.

Great thread.

Success is in the eyes of the beholder, isn't it. Yes, we've done fairly well, I think we all are satisfied. But literally success? No trophies, horrible cup performances, bottling CL ... I've maintained for a long time that we are not our best in 4231, even if we have been fairly good overall.

The formation wasn't why we only scraped a win against Wycombe or why we drew with Sunderland and only scored one against Middlesbrough.
Not fully, but might have been partially. Most of our top notch performances occur in different formations from what I call shit-shit-shit. A majority of weak performances occur in shit-shit-shit. Same problem: loads of possession, some long distances shooting, loads of control, few goals. Other formations tend to lead to more goals this season. Yes, we must have the right players available, I agree. But over time, many different team selections have been wasteful in 4-2-3-1.

WTF does it matter? we're second in the league FFS.
Care to remind us where we were in the league after a long spell of using 4231 (inc. factors as goals scored, number of wins), and where we are after a long spell of not using it? THAT'S OP's point.

I've loved very second this season of seeing Pochettino try other formations, and long may it continue.

Lollerpool won't sit back, their defence isn't great, we will get plenty of space to work. 4231 will do fine.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Not success.
Success is quantifiable achievement. Not an opionion.
