The problem Ndombele faces is a very similar one many creative/skillful black players have faced in the past and still do.

Naturally black players are extremely strong and generally have excellent stamina so managers have tended to play them in a defensive midfield role. If they have serious pace, they are played wide, if they are good at finishing, then they will play up front.

However, the creative black players havent had their fair chance of playing in their deaired roles. Its a complaint Yaya toure has made in the past and you can see Pogba gets criticised a lot for not tracking back. He is another player that should be playing closer to the strikers.

Ndombele should be treated like Gazza, Riquelme, zidane etc and be allowed to flourish further up the field without the need to do the donkey work.
I do agree on some parts! Though I think it is a bit of a generalisation to say all black players are extremely strong and have excellent stamina! However I think sometimes you get typecast into roles, I remember turning up and playing for a mates team, they stuck me on the wing to use my "pace" before they had even seen me play; ironically though I do play DM wishing I was Michael Carrick but more like Michael Brown.
I think having this great generation of black francohone CMs come through like Makelele, Essien, Vieira and Zokora you're hoped that you are the next one of them by managers. Just like how anyone of North African descent was the next Zidane! I think this is more memetic at a fan level. Also I feel that nowadays you do get less box to box players who can do everything like Stevie G and Keane; the speed and nature of the game probably means that CMs have to specialise as it's so much more intense and draining. Maybe we expect too much of players like Pogba to be banging in one in two; sliding through assists then rushing back the other end to make a sliding tackle. Attacking midfielders cover so much ground just finding space, look at the stats! Then to expect them to still put in a strong shift on the way back is quite a bit.
Perhaps managers and pundits are putting expectations on players to replicate this rather than realising the game has changed.

I think Pogba got his fair share of play time back at Juve with Conte, that 352 really worked for him.

I think it is interesting about the pundits now being so far removed from the modern game, however I still think someone like Viera would still be running things box to box like he used to. Gerrard was not truly box to box as for the most part he sat off the front man. He just had plenty of energy to get back when needed and the way he played RB in that final showcased it.

Still though, I don't think that should detract from when certain players just don't put the effort in. When you see someone like Pogba or N'Dombele not make an effort to track a certain run which you know that someone like Sissoko, Dele or even Lamela would, you have to call them out. It may be nothing more than them just not having the ability to, but could also be an element of "fuck this, it's not my job".

Don't underestimate Alli Gold's access. He's regularly granted entry to the weekly Ndombele weigh-in.

Sometimes they even let him fire the party poppers.

from a player who by all accounts has had a bad season - this is his personal highlights

without doubt one of our most talented players (arguably the most talented) and still only 23. Strap in lads because we have a very special player and he's all ours.

With that strength and the ridiculous amount of skill Ndombele has, it reminds me of Gascoigne. If Tanguy gets properly fit and motivated, we could see one of the greatest players in our history. Here's hoping.

Looks like Lo Celso is out on Friday so we're gonna need Ndombele to step up.

He does like a big game - he was renowned for it at Lyon - so hopefully he makes a statement against Utd.

Always felt he would have a great 2nd season but because of lock down that will come forward to the end of this season. If he can work hard off the ball and win the ball back I think he and Lo Celso could make a great 2 in the middle. Potentially as good as Wanyama and Dembele.

It would be great to see him put a run of games together.

Nope, neither is a “positional” midfielder as Jose would put it. They need someone behind them to sit, sniff danger, tackle, win the ball, and give it to them.
