I always thought it was more the Zidane, Taarabet, Zaha type of players where as Essien was more robust and had more of a high intelligence game in terms of positioning, interceptions. Also I realise the 3 players I listed were far apart in skill level but it was that unpredictability with their footwork to pull off incredible moves.
I think Taarabt's unpredictability mostly came from the fact that he never looked like he knew what the fuck he was doing...

From a Guardian article in July 2019

It had all gone wrong for him at Guingamp, where he was released as a 17-year-old in 2014 – the club did not offer him a professional contract amid concerns over his commitment. Was he prepared to make the necessary sacrifices?
Talk to anybody in France about Ndombele and one word recurs: nonchalance. It is not meant as a compliment and takes in the impression that he has not always been the most hard-working player. Perhaps it is because his talent is so big that everything comes easily to him.
“He was nonchalant,” Sullivan Martinet, his youth team captain at Guingamp, told Ouest France. “He was so strong that we were expecting more from him, more consistency. He didn’t try maybe as much. He didn’t give the impression of always being 100%. With hindsight, what harmed him was his behaviour off the pitch. We were less talented but we wanted it more than him.”

No one is saying this guy won't become a great player but these comments are in line with what Mourinho has hinted at.

To succeed in the premier league, especially in midfield, you need to work hard off the ball. No amount of talent on the ball can save you from that.

He can be as nonchalant as he wants because every time he has been on the pitch for us he has been the best player so it doesn’t bother me. He’s been injured and that’s the bottom line. Has nothing to do with how he is as a person

Maybe I've been wrong all these years, but I always associated mercurial as meaning exceptionally talented.

Maybe remove the ‘Bof’ from your description.

Assuming that is meant to refer to you being a boffin?

Or does ‘Bof’ mean something else?

If so..... TIL

From what I remember from French, "bof" is a French nothingy expression, sort of like blah or equivalent to a verbal shrug of the shoulders

I think the point is that his 'nonchalance' is carried into his general lifestyle which is impacting how much he can do on the pitch...if he doesn't have the fitness levels required for the premier league then he will be more susceptible to the type of injuries he has picked up so far, of course injuries can happen no matter how fit you are but if your conditioning/diet is spot on you lessen the risks.

Absolute baller but i can't say i am not a little concerned about him, someone of his ability should not be getting released by a club due to fitness & commitment... let's just hope it all works out as he could be absolutely top draw for us.

We’ve been shit this year - if we want to get good again no he can’t be nonchalant. Lo Celso puts himself about and suddenly he’s the best player on the park by a stretch. Ndombele will have to do something similar to make it - Dembele certainly did.

The concern is that this sort of issue is seldom ever really fixed.

I assume "mercurial" comes from having taken mercury, and therefore having a bit of Bohemian madness in you. The bonus being you are also free of syphilis.
I thought it was referencing the mercury in old thermometers. Mercurial = up & down, hot & cold.

He is potentially the most gifted midfielder we have had at the club for many years. You can just see that he has so much natural talent. Just need him fit and focused and we have a very special player.

I love Sissoko but no. He has looked good for us because we've massively lacked quality and he tries harder than anyone else. In an elite team he'd look out of place.

Kante

Ndombele GLC

Yes please

Did you read the article?

If they were saying the same things then as Mourinho is now then it's exactly who he is as a person!

On one of the threads there are fans saying " they don't want to go to matches anymore " for various reasons but mainly that the team is not
good enough . Well part of the reason we are not good enough is that we have players that cost a lot of money but need time to get up to fitness / need time to adapt / injured often / all I am saying is lets sign players premiership ready and able to play from the get go it seems that its too much to ask .

Premiership ready means buying from the premier League. Do you really want to restrict us to buying from just nineteen other teams? Although it would be less than nineteen as we couldn't buy from the other top six sides.

A person that overcome those issues spectacularly until now. Going from unwanted lower division player to £60m player in a few short seasons?

Who's to say he can't get back on track again?
