We signed Ndombele and Clarke on 2nd July and signed two on deadline day, when we significantly reduced fee on them and they were also injured/coming back from holiday.
City signed Cancelo day before deadline. Adrian was bought on 5.08. United bought Maguire 5.08 too with paying exactly the same amount Leicester wanted at the start of window. Luiz and Tierney bought on deadline day.

Not a difference at all.
City - Summer 18 signed Mahrez in July, Summer 17 signed Walker, Danilo, Mendy, Ederson, Silva all in July.
ManU - Summer 19 James & AWB in June, Summer 18 signed Dalot & Fred in July, Summer 17 Lukaku, Matic, Lindelof all in July.
Chelsea - Summer 18 Jorginho & Kovacic both in July, Summer 17 Rudiger, Bakayako, Morata all in July
Arsenal - Summer 19 signed Ceballos, Martinelli, Saliba in July, Summer 18 Leno, Sokratis, Torreira, Guendouzi all in July, Summer 17 Kolasinac and Lacazette both before August

Do you want me to continue with Liverpool?

In the last 3 Summers we've signed 1 senior player before the last week of the window. We are absolutely worse than our competitors at this.

How many of those players would you consider to be good value for money? People like you would've had us sign Lo Celso for £55m instead of £30m because "our competitors wouldn't bother negotiating and just throw money at the selling club."

We want Højbjerg in quickly, so lets just offer £40m now and get it done.

No one is saying spend £40m, it seems clear that Southampton want £25m. It seems like a sensible enough valuation to me, I reckon we can structure a deal that works for both sides around that number quite quickly. We can then hold firm on a higher valuation of KWP going the other way. It's not rocket science, it's about getting deals over the line quickly for a sensible amount.

Standing firm on high valuation on KWP might just mean we're stuck with him though and I don't see Mourinho playing him. If so we're down 15m on the Højbjerg deal from what we intend to spend. And that's the budget for another player

You honestly think no other club would come in for KWP if Southampton look elsewhere? Get real

Think there's a good chance they won't for the same fee as Southampton would.
Soton have seen glimpses of his potential, but it was up and down and possible not enough to convince others. Before the loan he was perhaps a 5m player, even if Levy had his mind more on 20m. Now I've seen Southampton fans say they'd be happy with 10-15.

Selling players can be difficult. We can't just say who we don't want here and expect there to be clubs willing to pay what we think they're worth.

According to this report from sky southampton value him at £10 million. That’s ridiculously low for KWP. If we sell for that base value there has to be add ons. I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s a bit of a sticking point and maybe why the deals will be separate if we want to push it through quicker.

Eh, we’re clearly worse than others. We’re regularly the last or one of the last in the league to sign a player. We signed Tanguy (and Clarke) early but left Sessegnon and Lo Celso for deadline day. Then we didn’t buy anyone the whole summer (only club to ever do that). Season before that we didn’t buy our first player until August 18th. That’s not some hyperbole to say we’re slower than most clubs.

Kind of a different point you're making to the one that I was making. But that's OK. And everything's OK. COYS.

True. However, out of the rumoured incomings, presumably only Hojbjerg would go directly into the starting XI.
Hojbjerg, Castagne(?)... Option of 2 up top in a 442 with Wilson.

Brooks will be like Bernado off the bench or can play in the 10 when Dele or Lo Celso are injured. Also, plenty of games to go round...

Strength in depth - It's all good.

The key is Hojbjerg sticking to his guns and maintaining he'll only sign for us. If he does that the price will eventually start coming down as Southampton get squeezed. It's classic Levy territory but deeply unsatisfying for the fans who just want stuff sorted. Conversely, KWP could go anywhere for the best price and I fully expect there to be interest, so maybe Soton need to get on with it while they have a free run.

Another lovely transfer stand-off. Luckily Levy always emerges victorious from these protracted battles... :banghead: :banghead:

Saints said if this goes too late they wont sell and that Hojbjerg is happy to play another season. If Levy does his classic wait until the last minute, we wont get this done.

Do you think liverpool don't have their main 11 given everyone is fit? Or united don't have their main 11 right now given everyone is fit? City is bit different as their 15 or 16 players are as good as any team's main 11 players ...

Pool :
Allison
Taa vvd gomes robertson
Hendo wijnaldum keita
Salah firmino mane

Utd:
De gea
Awb maguire lindelof shaw
Matic pogba bruno
Greenwood martial rashford

Among top 4 teams, right now chelsea don't have definite structure of main 11 and that's why they are signing all these attacking players. We can safely assume werner, pulisic, havertz and ziyech will be their front 4 in the next season given everyone is fit and firing .. Behind it will be rice and kovacic given the fact they now want to upgrade Kante who is seemingly becoming injured prone ...

Sorry to be picky but how is Keita first choice at Liverpool?

ShaMe as he seemed a good player but he’s pretty much struggled since joining them and Fabinho is more first choice.

Plus Oxlade-Chamberlain was getting more starts when back from injury, plus you have Milner so although Liverpool’s back four / goalkeeper and front three are a given the midfield three varies.

Not completely, you said all transfers dragged on. I said ours are significantly worse, that’s true.
