I feel kind of bad, when I saw you collecting donations I didn't even think to donate. I saw this thread and suddenly thought I use this site more than any other site and find it more informative (for the most part) than other sites like Sky Sports not just for transfer stuff but also match reports etc.

I've made a little donation to ease my conscience

I haven't donated as I'm a broke student, but I don't think they are trying to rip anyone off. Nor are they charging, which for the amount of members they have is very kind of them. They are simply asking, if you don't like it don't comment and try and ward others off donating.

They aren't running a business, they are putting Spurs fans together. They need a big server owing to the amount of posters and members using alot of bandwidth, simple really.

i was joking.

but it does seem steep to me.

Maybe you should run the site then.

Or maybe you shouldn't, because you wouldn't have any members.

Sorry for skanking you.

The traffic on here is so high daily that it requires dedicated hosting I believe & therefore it costs a lot to keep it running. I'm not sure I fully understood the problems with the advertising & why there is only now a shortfall, but there you go.

We pay around £200 a month (depending on exchange rate to Canadian dollars) for a dedicated server, tons of bandwidth and 24/7 support for managing the server. I've talked to a few people who can do it slightly cheaper but who don't have the superb reputation our hosting company has for support so it'd be a risk to dump a busy forum on a new host and even worse during the transfer window.

I think for the size of the forums we run we're fairly underpowered even at £200 and lots of similar size forums would be running two or more servers (including a dedicated database server) and paying substantially more. I know some slightly larger vbulletin forums pay upwards of a grand a month and some of the really big ones pay thousands.

As for the advertising. Our current deal with our main advertiser came to an end and had dropped off massively in recent months and while we're waiting to hear from a replacement, the initial signs suggest they're very unlikely to take us on.

To top it off within days of that news, our backup advertiser who maybe made us like £50 a month decided after 5 years to suddenly end our account as not enough people were clicking the ads and their clients weren't seeing enough leads from us.

I think with all the credit/finance issues going on at the minute advertisers are taking a much closer look at who actually makes them money and we weren't doing.

Hope that answers the questions :)

Yes that's fine. I know forums can be expensive to run if they are popular and have lots of content. In my youth I used to frequent tranceaddict.com & that's one of the largest online. The owner of that site had fees of around $1,000 per month. He just left a donation box up and people steadily ticked over the required amount.
