Just shows the measure of where we think our club sits these days, a player wants a release clause if a CL club, he means a big club, comes in for him and nobody thinks we're among the clubs in that bracket anymore.
Could it be that he wanted a release clause with Brighton only? We’re a big enough club that he wouldn’t want one with us, surely!

If he wants the clause or doesn't seem excited to come we shouldn't go near him. Enough with players who will push for moves at the first opportunity or don't want to be here.

Doesn't matter how talented they are they end up being a headache and hurting us more than they help us.

Probably wanted a release clause due to how hard it is to deal with exiting Brighton. Once he meets Levy I'm sure it'll ease his concerns...

That's how I see it, if he does he's got a real ego problem and I wouldn't touch him with a barge pole.

I'm sure it's wage related with Brighton. They offered him like 30-40k supposedly. So if you smash it but can only get out via getting a 100m bid, I get his point.
I also never heard it was a CL release clause, just a release clause

Dog eat dog world. Weird how we get upset about players wanting to leave but at the same time a large section of this site vilify players who want to be at this club who they think are not fit to wear the shirt.

Players wanting to leave is a natural part of football.

Players thinking about how they can leave before they even arrive is another matter.

Interesting, I saw Brighton were at the point of signing him until they couldn't agree personal terms, due to him wanting a release clause.

Decent amount of goals last year too. Anyone who has seen him play much, does he usually play on left or right wing?
I think Brighton might start getting more and more that. After they’ve helled teams over the barrel of a gun for their players.

I would hope we'd steer far clear of anyone who sounds like they could be a bit of a mercenary. No interest in being used as a stepping stone.
I take the view that it is the ambitious players we should be looking to. He clearly wants Champions league.

This guy is genuinely one of the most electric and exciting young players…

rapid, quick feet, left footed player who can play as a dynamic 8 or off of the wing, would really add some flexibility tactically!
If it’s Eze for 70 or this guy for 35, Kudus is a clear choice (and no, that’s not just taking the cheaper option!)

I guess that's one of the problems with being a club that unearths young talent and uses it as a business model by selling them on, eventually the young talent wises up and starts using the club.
I suspect the Caicedo saga has red flagged it.

It doesn’t scream of a great attitude does it. I don’t mind his insisting on a healthy release clause after a couple of years but he should be joining spurs intent on helping us return to the CL. If he was as good as he thinks he is he would already be dealing with bigger CL clubs.

Give him a 5 year contract which either party can cancel after 2 years if he fails to help us return to the Champions League by then, and make half his earnings contingent on his helping us return to Europe

This whole thing of wanting a release clause is over blown. His agent would be negligent not trying to get one . I’d be even more inclined to ask for one from spurs than brighton.Given how hard Levy makes it for players to ever leave i think it’s understandable. Its upto the club to make sure he’s happy and progressing and never wants to actually trigger it.

I think with how difficult Brighton make it for clubs signing their players, it's understandable why he'd want a release clause for a bigger club if he were to go there.

I would like to think he'd see us as a 'big club'...

As long as the release clause is very high, say £100m, it doesn’t activate if we get in the CL and can’t be activated in the first 2 years then I could accept it.

Maybe he wouldn't ask us for a clause?
Maybe Ange will have a chat to him and assess his attitude?

He's a decent player, so I wouldn't say know to him based on the assumption that he's too big for his boots because really, he's just trying to look after his career.

We can't only sign players who are desperate to play for Spurs and stay with us forever.

Yeah it's always a balance. I'm sure some of our recent signings would jump at the chance to sign for bigger clubs if they came knocking.

If he's up for the project and just wants reasonable assurances that's all well and good - I'm sure that's been the case with previous players like Berbatov who wanted bigger things than Spurs and ultimately over the course of 2 years it benefited both parties .

I just think it's a big red flag when a player is quite openly mercenary and their personal ambition trrumps their commitment to the collective cause.

You need a degree of commitment and respect for the club - if Kudus can offer that then great but if his main priority is planning his next move and he wants a CL-related buyout clause, or any buy-out clause that suits him more than the club then I think we should look elsewhere.

Fantastic fantastic player!!! If a deal can be done , Ange will speak to him and see if he has the right attitude or not, CL clause or not.

Covers RW,LW and AM, goals, assists, exactly what we need.

I say go for it if he does want to be here but the clause is a worry.
