Can’t see why? You can sign someone subject to a medical.
Rather far-fetched, but maybe Levy used this to try to leverage a lower transfer fee at the 11th hour, resulting in no agreement being reached on deadline day. I imagine it was as simple as Inter demanding more than we wanted to pay though.

Levy reportedly knocked £1m off the fee for Bale (a month's wages) due to the injury prognosis that arose from his medical. I presume that was the cause of delay between him arriving for his medical and signing the contract / being announced. It's possible Levy tried something similar for Skriniar but it backfired.

Far more likely that Inter just realized they weren’t actually going to be able to get the players they wanted to replace him with (think Kante was heavily rumoured initially, and the Fiorentina CB), and that the whispers about Conte not wanting him weren’t entirely true - probably Conte wanted other players more, but with that off the table was fine with Skriniar sticking around and even starting him the other day.

Also, what an absolutely piss-poor job Serie A has done to protect their players this season. Embarrassing and it may well cost some players their career.

Different situation though. Real were desperate to get Bale off the books ( the only reason we were able to sign him at all). So, probably worth trying as if they had refused I doubt it would have been a deal breaker.

I’d like to think Levy wouldn’t have tried it on that way if we’d more or less agreed with Inter. We’d be signing him for years after all, not just a season and it’s quite apparent now that although Inter were open to selling him they certainly weren’t desperate to get rid.

We just couldn’t stretch to what they wanted and I doubt we’d have compromised either if the boot was on the other foot.

A real shame as I think he could have come in and improved our first 11 straight away.

Wanting Kante from Chelsea was also the reason Inter wouldn't budge from their valuation either for Skriniar I should imagine. There are a handful of clubs that Covid does not not affect...Chelsea being one of them. So they didn't need to sell or reduce their valuation of Kante either.

I also suspect the structure of the deal was a major stumbling block for the very same reason.

Alasdair Gold said we might go back in for him in January, which ridiculously, is in less than 3 months! The Athletic said similarly too in one their window round-up pieces. Who knows if it's possible or whether we will be hope we do!

I agree with you, but this is Daniel Levy we're talking about. In the words of an exasperated Alex Ferguson, after the Berbatov deal: "But you know what Daniel Levy is like. He is different." ?

International football will make every league susceptible unfortunately.

Maybe we should start paying for oppo’s pre-game tests similarly to what we did against Leyton Orient.
The quick tests mentioned in the below article sound really interesting.

Alasdair Gold in his most recent Q&A said, "I'd be surprised if an enquiry isn't made in January but much depends on his position at Inter. The Slovakian wanted to come to Spurs but if he's playing every week and the Italian club do not want to let him go then it's going to be a tough to prise him away."

We heard the same thing with Dybala and dozens of players before. Sometimes with some players you get one shot because they're too good to be kept out of a team long term and if you miss that shot you miss that player. It happens to every team so I'm not going to be "woe is us we suck" because we don't and had a great window. This is just one deal we happened to miss.

I remember when Rashford and Martial were out of favour at ManU with itk suggesting we were in for at least one of them. Then Jose left and they were once again seen as part of the future of the club. Things change very quickly in football, indeed in life

This kinda reminds me of Liverpool's pursuit of van Dijk, hopefully it turns out similarly - but with league title and Champion's League win's reversed.
