I’d definitely play him over Tanganga at right wing back, but looks like we need to prioritise another player in that position in January.

gosh people wanting to give doherty a reprieve after an OK 30 minute cameo
Or they’re just recognising that he did well compared to the person he replaced.
after 18 months of the worst footballing ability I have seen in a spurs shirt
You can’t have supported us very long.
and a joke of performance 2 weeks ago in slovenia
As with most of that team that night, are you writing them all off?
we really have awfully low standards
Or we really just would rather see our players play well than not?

Players at this level wax and wane but another key contribution to performance is their mentality and how the system play fits their skill set. If they played at a certain level at one point in their career, it is likely they can reach that level again barring physical breakdown or injury. Some players can play in multiple systems whereas other players have fairly narrow skill sets that translates into success into a limited style or system. Shove Michael Owen into a style which requires hold up play out of him and you probably would Doherty like performances and an eventual Doherty like level of confidence. There is a good player in there that may or may not be able to be teased back out.

But the reason i love the appointment of Conte is that there aren't many coaches as good as developing systems and a culture that brings out the most out of the players. Given the level that most of this team has performed at (and that includes Dele and Tanguay), if they are willing to work hard, they'll get better and the team's performance will benefit. Conte is like a boat repairman. He's going to repair all the boats that have fixable leaks. But he is also like the tide because every one of those boats that stays afloat will be rising with that tide. they have no choice in the matter.

One thing I like about Conte is that he seemingly tries to avoid putting square pegs in round holes.
Neither Doc or Sess are suited to play in a back-four, but are clearly a much better fit for the WB role.
Remains to be seen if they will be good enough, but at least this formation will play to their strengths.

Scratching my head at some of the ratings he’s getting for yesterday’s performance. He improved us massively when he came on and his introduction coincided with a shift in momentum. Yesterday’s game he played well, I’m not sure how that’s even up for debate.

Isn't playing Tanganga at RWB a case in point?

hopefully he can perform at least like a premier league player to drive some interest from other clubs

I said this before kick off yesterday when the teams were announced just because i believe he's more suited to the RWB role. You can imagine a few of the responses and disagrees i got.

Yeah I really don’t see where all this praise is coming from other than he wasn’t god awful which is our standard expectation

Oh I dunno, maybe people are happy that a player who has had a torrid time since joining us came on, played well, looked confident, was better than the guy he replaced, and contributed significantly to the build-up play for two goals.

At a guess.

you can say he looked ok yesterday and may play a part for us in the next month while also thinking he still isn’t of the required level and needs to be replaced

these aren’t mutually exclusive. you don’t always have to be on one side or the other.

Exactly this!

We all know the limitations of some of our players, we all know some of them need upgrading, but I’d much rather praise someone when they’ve done well.

It doesn’t mean we all suddenly think Doherty is the answer to all our problems or that he’ll be a key player. We are allowed to praise good performances just as much as we are all allowed bemoan shite ones.

Doherty looked more like the player we signed from Wolves yesterday. Will be a big bonus over the busy period coming up if he can up his game and provide rotation on the right wing.

Not sure it's a reprieve, but I think people just want Spurs to win games and if Doherty who is still a Spurs player starts playing better and contributing something then surely that is good. At the very least it'd maybe get us a buyer if he isn't a long term option. I thought he did well. Williams had the beating of Tanganga and Doherty handled him better (although Williams must have been gassed as he had looked really good earlier in the game).

If Conte can turn round Doherty, we should buy a non league no hoper called Lazarus for tuppence and chuck our scouting dossiers in the bin ?

Does anyone else think Conte could work his magic on this donkey?
Everyone should be getting a fresh start. If Conte thinks he can get a tune out of him then I trust him to know best.

In theory, this system should suit him down to the ground. Doesn’t always work out in practice.
