Until Mourinho got hold of him he was a Madrid cast off, much like vdv when he joined us. Very good player but it was at Chelsea that he roundly became considered world class. Even if I’m wrong here, it doesn’t affect my original point that none one of Mourinho’s signings were considered world class in that first wave, he just managed to put together players that complemented one another exceptionally well and brought out each other’s strengths.

Nah I know your point was bang on I just loved Makelele . He was world class at Madrid but their president was an idiot and didn't appreciate what he did for the club. All the players did though, Zidane when they sold him and replaced him with beckham said why add more paint to the bentley when you've sold the Engine. He was their main man during a really succesful period and selling him was part of the reason they didn't win the champions league for over a decade
