I think people are being a bit OTT about the whole thing. It was a really disappointing result, but it was an absolute fluke. On another day Kane would have scored rather than hit the post, and Bale would have buried his chance.

Definition of fluke.

noun
  1. an unlikely chance occurrence, especially a surprising piece of luck.

I guess your right. They had 3 flukes whilst we squandered a 3-0 lead. Inviting pressure on ourselves for 50 minutes - some fluke that.

Are you saying that a freak own goal and an absolute thunderbolt of a strike isn’t flukey?

Conceding 3 goals to West Ham is absolutely not a shock given how we've been defending for months.

Dier was injured on England duty. He wasn’t available for this game.
Whoops, did forget that. I believe though we've rarely played him and Toby. We still need someone with some pace which means Sanchez, Tanganga or Rodon. We've got probably a bit too much riding on two kids, one unfit and the other just signed - it's an unfair amount of pressure on them really. The focus has to be on coaching our £42m defender into at least a competent £15m level asset.

I know people are gutted with the result and at fulltime all I could do was laugh but now I'm pretty downbeat.

However quite frankly that first half performance was fantastic and if Liverpool do have the injury problems we think they will then I do think we will be in the mix. I think a lot will depend on our central defence and if Rodon can come good and play that left side allowing Dier to play on the right then we will look significantly more solid. We have superb strength in depth.

We're playing as good football as anybody and we have the best player in the league. We will be up there for the title in my opinion.

Yes. That’s right. Switching off for 50’minutes and defending like U5’s / letting Wham control the game (and them taking advantage of the above) is not “flukey”.

I included the definition for you as well. No fluke today, we were shit in the 2nd half and they took advantage.

Yes and no for me. Had it remained 3-0 I would have probably for the most part looked past the way we played after going 3-0 up but it would still definitely be something I'd have marked for improvement.

I just think the way we ended up playing allowed for such a result to occur, we made the chance of a comeback far greater than it should have been in the way we invited pressure and the pattern of the game was like that for so long that having our backs a bit against the wall if they even just got the one goal back was inevitable, and it shouldn't be like that.

If you're 3-0 up and a team gets 1 goal back, especially after 80 minutes it should just be a feeling of mostly consolation, but because of the pattern of the game it became squeaky bum time even with such a lead and so little time left.

Think Jose is spot on we were weak psychologically.

Thing is aside from the first four seasons of Poch era, ever since I’ve supported spurs we’ve been a bit of a pussy team and prone to throwing away silly games.

Remember the Man U game we were 3-0 up and they tonked us 3-5 at our own ground?

It’s just always been a thing with us that we can look very very good at times but have such fragile mentality.

Hopefully Bale we change that a bit as he is a winner and maybe Roden will also toughen up defence, but also concerning how Jose said Winks came on and we regained control where a lot of people on here see, to think he dislodges PEH from where he is most effective.

I wonder if Lo Celso was available whether he would have made a more positive impact coming on.

I 100% agree with you. This should have never happened even if Jose subbed one of us on in midfield. But it was the catalyst that lead to it.
The reason he made the subs was the freshen it up. We didn’t really look in the game and had we grabbed a 4th, and we had chances, he’d be praised for his substitutions and exciting attacking intent. The result is a tough one to take but it was more mentality than tactics in my opinion. And that’s a problem that is bigger than just this one game. Great squad, much work to do.

Maybe it was. Problem is there's flukes in our favour too. Son's on a goal per game and Kane is on course for over 90 goals and assists just in the league. That won't last either. We need to sort the fundamentals.

So are you saying you wouldn’t have brought Bale on at three nil up? Because frankly I don’t believe you.

No, I wouldn't. At 3-0 we didn't need more goals, we needed not to concede. And as was very clear to see (and not surprising), he looked off the pace.

There's a reason why so many fans joke about Sanchez having a head shaped like a 50 pence piece. His headers often go anywhere but to safety. There was nothing flukey about his own goal. It was just terrible heading technique.

It’s not a fluke. We went 3-0 up against them last season and the same very nearly happened. The players visibly crumbled after their first went in. It’s 100% a mentality issue. It’s also unfortunate that we’d already used our subs by the time that first went in. My main criticism of Jose today is using that third sub to bring on an attacker.

One of those derby games. Should have won it at a canter, if Kane or Bale had taken their chance we'd be 2nd and laughing our cocks off at the Spammers. We should have known WH never roll over and die, poor game management and a bit of luck went their way. Frustrating as fuck but take the positives and move on to Thursday.

The positive is that our attack is firing, we're still in 3 tournaments, and we still have some chance of 4th in the league. We need to fix the defence pronto and be ready to try and get the other three. And we need signs of that happening soon
