Don't think Ledley has the personality for a big role. Obviously like him alot but has never come across as the most confident with speaking
I recall lots of people being impressed with Gary Neville's tactical analysis on MNF. How did Valencia work out for him.

Spurs connections and has managerial experience. He is no worse than any other suggestion so far

Are you thinking of someone else? This definitely puts the "spur" in "spurious". His only tenuous spurs connection is that he played in Ossie's testimonial.

Mourinho was quoted as saying this:
"Who is coming to replace him? I prefer that it's the club that's going to inform you about that but I prefer to go in the direction of developing local people, instead of bringing somebody with me.

"So it'll be someone with a history of the club, [a] connection with the club, so let's try to give them the opportunity."

- Local (geographically? harder to take literally when it's second or third language english)
- History of the club
- Connection with the club

It all points towards a former youth player, and my assumption was Mason (as he was doing his coaching stuff with the club), but of course King fits that and that's who they are saying is 'our guy'. (Of course Sol fits that too, but I don't think the club would be that stupid).

As long an Ian Walker isn't coming in as our GK coach I'll be fine with it

I think it's revealing and fascinating that King has been appointed to this role after Mourinho experienced him working with the defence. I also think it's revealing and fascinating for us to find out that King has been working with the defence, after watching the improved defensive performances of the past few weeks.

I agree with the majority here that he has entirely the wrong personality to be a manager. That role necessarily involves a lot of "front of house" work with the media and good negotiation skills, including handling difficult personalities and assisting with transfers.

The post above that simplistically declared that King isn't "bright enough to be a coach" is unworthy. He's not stupid, he's inarticulate. He has intelligence and skills that are not useful for expressing himself in public.

Young Ledley had pace, but his game was never about pace. His game was heavily about intelligence: speed of thought, anticipation, dealing with defensive problems by seeing them before they happened and preventing them, visual pattern recognition skills, a swiftly accessible mental database of what specific opponents like to do and how to nullify them and, most centrally, overall speed of reaction and thought combined with calmness. None of those skills are useful for dealing with journalists at press conferences, but they are transmissible to younger players on the pitch. And they're priceless.

Imagine being Japhet Tanganga and having Ledley King available every day to explain what to watch for when faced with a fast break, how to position your body to drive an attacker onto his weak foot or away from goal, angles to adopt when defending corners, timing of headers, peripheral vision, where to leave space when caught short-handed, etc., etc.

It's no surprise at all that Mourinho rates him as a defensive coach. It's like having Rodin on hand to teach sculpture. But I doubt he'll ever be a successful manager.

If Jose is right, I reckon having King as defensive coach could make a half-a-goal-a-game difference to next season's defensive record.

My one worry would be whether he has the skills to communicate what may be a very instinctive, subconscious type of footballing intelligence.

This can apply to all sportspeople though. It’s not a concern specific to Ledley, and I have no reason to doubt him personally. And I agree that Mourinho’s stamp of approval counts for a lot.

It’s a general concern I often have when great players become coaches, but there’s certainly something about a Ledley that commands respect and I’m excited about his appointment, and overall very optimistic.

(Anyway, my name here relates to him, so naturally I have a seriously* vested interest in his success!)

The best managers and coaches normally come out of left field. The best players rarely make it to the top of the managerial pile either unless they're handed it on a plate like Zidane and Pep. Ferguson was a very average player and so was Klopp but they obviously had/have a kind of understanding and vision that isn't related to playing ability. There's an awful lot of plate spinning that goes on in football management from tactics and preparation and dealing with the Chairman through to making sure the egos are massaged to exactly the right amount or players that need it are given a bollocking.

He managed to communicate clearly enough to elevate Dawson from a hacker into a fantastic partner in a steely defence.

Fantastic post. Couldn’t agree more. Hope this plays out. Long live the King!

When I was a young man there was a girl I wanted to go out with badly but my so called best mate who I hung about with was always saying things about her and why I should not go out with her it was always pick pick pick nag nag nag in the end I had to tell him to give it a rest .
I feel that annoyance about those that keep up the pick pick pick pick about Jose and all I can say is give it a rest .
Incidentally I took what he said about this girl was maybe true and moved on and a couple of weeks later he was going out with the same girl
You could not make it up .So my lesson was do not take any notice of the pick pick pick people ( insert anti Mourhino people ) as they are generally not to be relied upon .

Could watch this a million times and never get tired of it. As the commentator says, we talk about great goals, but this is a GREAT challenge.

Was Mourinho Chelsea manager when this happened?

No wonder our defence has looked a bit better after lockdown!

Ledley was a Rolls Royce - fast, quiet and smooth with an impeccably timed engine. I see no reason why he cannot do the job if offered it. The vast majority of footballers respond to those they respect and who doesn't respect LK? A person doesn't have to be a loudmouth to get a point across.

Lovely having a true club legends (and our last trophy winning captain) back at the club. If our centre backs can’t learn something from him then they’re lost causes, he to this day remains the best centre back I’ve seen anywhere, even accounting for my Spurs bias. Couldn’t tell which was his best foot, first touch of a Spanish playmaker, power and strength of a bull but the pace and agility of a cheetah, unparalleled vision, almost never had to tackle but when he did it was perfect, and read the game ten steps ahead of every other player on the pitch.

Couple that all with his immense natural fitness (see the league cup final 2008 for proof) and athleticism, as well as full commitment to his profession, and you’ve got the ideal footballing role model not just for our young defenders, but practically every player at the club. I genuinely believe that he’d have ended up great in whatever outfield position he specialised in, he was that good.

Excellent post. People often forget that intelligence comes in different forms. You don't judge a fish on it's ability to climb a tree.

Hmmm...well you certainly judge your Mrs in the kitchen ?

I am genuinely excited about this appointment. If Mourinho has watched King coaching and reckons he can coach, then I think we can conclude King can coach.

If King can turn our collection of talented, slightly mismatched defenders into a coordinated unit, this could be the most important signing of the summer.

And yes, that was the best piece of solo defending I have ever seen.
