I've noticed that Jose really does seem to try and adapt slightly for every single opponent. The formation and tactics might not differ hugely everytime as usually we play the 4-2-3-1 with 3 atb in build-up and push the RB further on and tuck the AM's inside but we often fall into a mid or low block 4-4-2 when without the ball. Today the difference was we played the 4-4-2/4-4-1-1- and held that shape when we attacked as well.

Its interesting that Jose does this, some will say its great and it comes back to the arguement that Poch never had a good plan B or reacted in games enough and some will say we should have a single effective system that we master like wolves, sheff.utd, liverpool/man.city etc.

I don't think there is a right or wrong particularly its just how you see the game, do you rather focus on your opponents strengths and try to play to minimise those whilst also capitalising on their weaknesses or do you focus more on your own strengths and let the opponent worry more about you. Different schools of thought.

I like it that he pushes players out of their comfort zones. By changing tactics all the time it makes them think. He treats them like they should know and be good at their job. I like that.

Not sure what the league has to do with it, football is football no matter where it's played. Formations are of course important but they come secondary to application and desire, I don't see a reason why it would fail if everyone buys into it.

It's not as if Atletico haven't been successful using it against English teams.

Nah this is the thing. Spanish league is notoriously more technical. Has a larger amount of teams that play technical possession based football.

Atletico are an outlier in all this. They basically set up and play like an expensively assembled Burnley side. It works in Spain because it’s so against the norm that the majority of sides don’t know how to deal with them. They are the masters of that style.

Obviously this style is more prominent in England. Players are more used to a coming up against two banks of four. As a top team in the prem your challenge a lot of the time is breaking down two banks of four. Over the course of a season i don’t think playing 4-4-2 is the most efficient way to do that.

Well that would make more sense if you think he's gonna line us up in a 4-4-2 in every match, do you think we will?, I don't, he's already played 4/5 different formations in order to adapt to the opposition.

I think its difficult to know what shape Jose will play long term, based on matches so far, given he currently has no defensive midfielder and no defensively capable right back to consider.

442 can certainly benefits players like Dele also ... We can play Dele/Son, Dele/kane, Kane/Son in the front two with Sissoko, Moura, Lamela, Bergwjin on either side of the wings .... Also I want Son to be played near Kane as when Son is played on the wings, his goalscoring instinct gets hampered ... Also in December, Jose said he sees Sissoko as a right sided midfielder and he wants to play him there rather than in Central Midfield .... It's just that our Central Midfield becomes lightweight as both Winks and Lo celso are not physically imposing. If we can bring one or two proper CM in the squad, may be old school 442 is the way to go as it brings the best out of Son, Dele, even players like Sess will get benefitted from the formation ....

PS: I want us to play a system where Son can play like cr7 role... I think son has the potential ability to score 30+ league goals if we can utilize him like how madrid and juventus used CR7 ...

Son definitely has the potential for a 30 league goal season. But yes he needs to not be hugging the touch line he is way more of a striker than a winger although he is having his best season in terms of assists.

He's got his tactics spot on today. If Kane and Son took their chances we would've been 4-1 easily.

But it's funny.... Sheffield United won against Chelsea with 26% ball possession yet no one gives a fucking a shit but apparently we were dominated by this pathetic Arsenal ?

What I’ll say to this is that SU are having an unprecedented season and thus the manner in which they achieve results means very little. Tottenham are a different breed altogether. Entertainment seems to be paramount first and foremost with us and tbh I like it that way. I’m personally not that invested in trophies or whatever although I understand others who are. I just want to see the club play well and be passionate and creative that’s all.

Well how do we all feel about that? Us beating the Arsenal is never to be sniffed at. However, is beating them enough? Is it a start or a finish? In these uncommon times it is not a bad thing to reflect on where we are. Listening to many lifetime Spurs supporters I feel they are divided presently into about five main camps/groups.
  1. Those who believe that ENIC/Levy are our main problem. Progress being stymied by their business first approach.
  2. Those who believe that the coach Mourinho and his coaching staff, are the problem. He isn't a good fit for us
  3. Those that believe it is the players/squad, who are not good enough to take us forward
  4. Those that think that it is a combination of the above
  5. Those that are happy to accept where we are, as long it is above Arsenal and winning, the performance being a secondary consideration to the result

For the first half of the previous decade every time we played Arsenal it felt like we were trying to make a point. “Yeah we were shit for a while and you had a period but we’re coming back and we will not make this easy for you”. The latter half of the decade we surpassed them and we were then trying to assert our dominance although in much more humble fashion than those lot. I loved the win yesterday but ultimately it felt like somewhat of a consolation prize.

we played some amazing football under Poch (whom i will always love), but ultimately we won nothing. I always thought the Pleat 87 team was the best Spurs side never to win a trophy but I reckon the 2017/18 side was the best side of the whole premier league era (all clubs) never to have won a trophy.

if we shithouse our way to the Europa League (if we qualify) next year under Mourinho, i won't be complaining, I will be dancing, singing and totally losing it because the last time I did that was in 2008!!

This should probably be in the mourinho thread but is relevant to the conversations about tn. Probably explains why it works with some and not others. Thats precisely what he is doing.

Quoted this from another thread but very relevant here.

The interview was really interesting when he talks about Mourinho's ability to extract that extra bit from you. He'll force you to think about yourself and why you play the sport.

Listening to this, I suspect the problem he had with players like Pogba and Shaw was that (at that stage in their career) they didn't care enough about being the best but more interested in looking good as most youngsters do. It would explain why older players seem to perform well for him.

More praise from the squad for Jose. Yet others on here will say our players don’t want to play for the manager. Be patient.

One word, Bournemouth lol.
Where was the game plan there? Thats what worries me. How anyone goes into a game against a team like that with no will to attack. Very odd.

The game plan is

Aurier cross
Counter attack like mad bastards
Mostly park 2 x buses
The plan seemed to be to initially tighten up the defense, as it seemed we had forgotten how to do that before the restart. Now the plan is to learn how to balance great defense and a strong, fluid attack. I thought we began to shown glimpses of this against Arsenal.

Bournemouth was a poor poor performance, no doubt. But expecting a manager and squad that are still experimenting and learning different systems, personnel rotation, and combinations to win every match [not to mention writhing 72 hours] is unreasonable.

Our players inability to take on their men and very poor passing were a big factor against Bournemouth. We were also unlucky to not have had a penalty that game which would have opened up the match, like good old United seems to get every match.

We've made our bed now though, just give Jose his 2 remaining full seasons, and see what happens
