If you come in fresh and read this thread for the past few pages you would think we have activated his release clause.

In which case I'm puzzled as to why if they're asking £70ish million they're apparently happy to sell him for £43 million next summer?

That's sort of my point and if the player isn't set on any particular team he could go to the £45m club but it seems from what people are posting that it never gets to that point because the player's agents effectively negotiate with prospective clubs.
But no one would pay £45M man. Can you give an example of anytime in the history of release clauses when someone has bid more than the clause?

just to help the rest of us get your point?

They are doing it to keep the player happy knowing he has a chance to leave the club next summer without much drama.

The 70 was the rumoured asking price prior to him signing a new deal in which the 43m clause was inserted into.

Leipzig seem to have a system in place where they work extremely hard at signing the appropriate profile of player. It reads to me that they'd be happier accepting a lesser fee in 12 months which provides them with a year to get the perfect replacement organised in that time. They have just performed this with N'kunku too. It also keeps the player happy because they know they can use leipzig as a stepping stone.

The added premium to buy now means they have less time to identify the correct replacement but if a club is desperate enough to pay that fee they're open to it.

This is just a hypothetical situation, but say they don’t like any of the LCB’s on the market this summer. They have probably the best one in the world. Yes, they could easily cash in, but they’d weaken their team significantly by doing so. So they give him a new contract with a clear path out, with the message being “please stay one more year while we sort out your replacement”.
