€30m is a shit loan of money for someone who has been scoring for fun in a weak league. I'd rather take a chance on Hooper

The portugese league is pretty darn strong. It is ahead of France in the coefficient and thus gets three champions league places for a league even though they only have 16 teams. Porto, Braga, sporting and Benfica have all consistently done well in europe in the last 10 years.

If Benfica had beaten Chelsea they would have nicked 1 of the French CL places & nobody would have complained if we had spent this on someone who'd done this in France

I can see how this one pans out, we fail to match his release clause, Porto refuse to sell but we insist he is our only target all summer. At 23:59 on the last day we say we will match the release clause but complications with third parties, the player, Santa Claus mean we failed to complete it but hey we really, really tried to break our transfer record and sign him but instead we sign Hugo Rodellega.

Call me cynical but we've all seen the movie before and director Levy isn't very creative with the plots in the franchise that is Spurs Transfer Windows.

Why oh why did we lose the 'optimistic' rating?

It was one of my favourites... :jimlad:

Jackson Martinez's agent has denied he is in talks with Tottenham and insists that his client is happy to stay at Porto.
Martinez has been strongly linked with a summer move away from Porto, and reports in recent days claimed Spurs had made a plus £20million move for the Colombian striker.

"Jackson Martinez has always said he wants to stay at FC Porto and he does not have to leave," Luis Manso told Radio Renaiscenca.

"He is happy and his family too so I do not see the intention of the club to sell."

Manso insists that the English media are to blame for the recent links with Tottenham.

"It seems strange that the English press push the issue, there really is just Porto," he said.

"We have not spoken to anyone and we are not interested in any negotiations. That's the truth."

Porto striker Jackson Martinez has hinted he could be on the move this summer, with Tottenham reportedly interested in securing his services.
The Colombian was in sensational form last season, leading the scoring in the Portuguese Liga with 26 goals and helping Porto claim the league trophy ahead of rivals Benfica in the process.

Tottenham have been linked with a move for the deadly striker in recent months, however his agent was quick to snuff out rumours of a switch to White Hart Lane to join former Porto boss Andre Villas-Boas.
However Martinez is likely to set the rumour mill in action once more after hinting that he could leave Porto this summer - and revealed some clubs had been in touch over a potential move.
"We have to talk a lot about my future," he said.
"Right now, there is nothing concrete but yes, there are some options to leave this summer. I will contact Porto and then wait and see what might happen."
Porto are likely to block any move from Martinez to leave having already sold both James Rodriguez and Joao Moutinho - a former Spurs target - to Monaco for a combined fee believed to be in the region of £70 million.

André Villas-Boas denied, this Saturday, any interest in Jackson Martínez. Although Tottenham looking for a player to strengthen the attack, he stressed that the Portuguese coach Colombian International is not this element.

"If I want Jackson Martínez? Not. Bernard? Is a player that we monitor as many others, but I think that nothing will happen on the part of Tottenham, "said the helmsman at the port, where participating in the VIP Race, in the Boavista circuit.

So Itk suggests that AVB was telling porkies (the scamp).

Are there any Portuguese members that could give us more insight? Is he the Uber-Striker that his record suggests? Is he a number 9 or does he tend to drift Ade style?

Um, he's really freaking good. Out of all the "line leading" strikers that are on the market, next to Falcao/Cavani he'd probably be my 3rd choice. One of the best parts, besides us getting a legit #9, would be he's probably a better talent than Higuain. In all seriousness, he's actually that good.

I had the opportunity to watch a lot of Porto matches and the guy really does have it all. He's like a souped-up Adebayor. Better pace, physicality, good with both feet, strong in the air.

I think the only detractors would be:

A.) We have to deal with Porto.
B.) He'll be expensive, really freaking expensive.
C.) He's 26 years old (still young and possibly not even at his peak but hard to tell)

What's his buyout clause? Think I heard 40m somewhere. Don't see any possibility of Porto releasing him unless we meet it. From past history they will know that they can hold out for the full amount because no doubt some maniacal French or Russian oil club will eventually cough it up.

Do did jardel and many others, which doesn't necessarily mean they do it anywhere else.

Wouldn't we be better just hiring the proto scouts than forking out €30m on someone who had just one season at proto? To much risk for me.
you're never on to a winning argument when you have to resort to using Jardel as an example...
