We're in a difficult situation but at the end of the day for me anyway football is a team game. We need to play whatever system best benefits the team. Defoe scores goals but offers very little in the way of team play or possesion football. Dempsey has alot of goals in him Ade too and Bale if played in the right system and for me 442 isn't the answer. None of the top teams play 442 and that speaks volumes to me. We've developed beyond catering to selfish players like Defoe. Players like Defoe are Uefa cup level and we're aspiring to be a CL team.
what would you describe utd's system as?
as for the last part, fact is defoe is in the team and will be in the team for the forseeable so you either play a passenger like sig or demps or you play ade with him.
except we went in at half time drawing 2-2 using 442 and came out in the 2nd half with a 433 and lost 5-2. you make a lot of good points but all of them are based around ade playing as the lone striker, which he's not and i don't see that changing anytime soon.
As far as Dempsey and Sig struggling to influence games for me the problem is link up play with the striker as there is none with Defoe or very little. You give Defoe the ball and most of the time you're not going to get it back. Dempsey and Sig thrive on linking up with the striker.
AVB seems kinda shell shocked from his time with the chavs and the influence fan favourites and player power had in getting him the boot. Or it looks that way to me from his handling of the GK situation and now the striker situation as we have clearly better players on the bench but he's reluctant to make a change until a clear majority think it's warranted.
I disagree with this bit: Yes, on form Ade is a superior player but at the moment he's not. You can't drop an in-form striker like Defoe for Ade until Ade is sharp enough to lead the line by himself. That would just be shooting ourselves in the foot.

Sig and Dempsey are only passengers because there isn't a centre forward to play off.
Even vdV struggled at #10 when he had to play with Defoe, rather than a #9.
Defoe averages about 10 passes a game, compared to Ade's 50+. Most of those will be to an on rushing #10. Defoe's shoot from anywhere approach completely nullfies the second striker/ACM.
Playing 442 means you get over run in midfield
That coupled with the fact that nearly very team domestic and international plays 451 ( or variants of it ) means its a No from me Dermot and I'm out
you don't think we're being overrun already with sig/demps as the extra midfielder? they're getting lost in games and are offering very little. it's case of sig/demps vs ade ... i know which i'd prefer.
That's one way of looking at it. But that would mean changing our whole system to accomadate one player in particular who offers very little in the way of team play. Ade for Defoe would mean we keep the current system AVB wants to implement to the benefit of the team not just Defoe.

Perhaps a bad example as even at 2-0 up we were getting battered. They had so much momentum that we would've lost whatever we did. The way to not lose that game would've been to recognise that we were lucky to be 2-0 up and bring on Sandro for Saha as soon as we scored the penalty.except we went in at half time drawing 2-2 using 442 and came out in the 2nd half with a 433 and lost 5-2. you make a lot of good points but all of them are based around ade playing as the lone striker, which he's not and i don't see that changing anytime soon.
