If you haven't noticed mate, football and the whole world has moved on a bit since then. You simply can't afford to stand still.

You haven't moved with the times is the perennial response from those with low standards. You want the team to freefall if we cannot achieve fourth. Lets not forget, we laugh at Arsenal for not winning anything for nearly ten years but at the same time you think winning fourth is success.

I'm glad I haven't changed with the times if that's your standard.

So if we lose to Arsenal but qualify for the wafer league will you be booing? Don't bother to answer that, I think I already know.

*I'd heard people talk about the modern fan and their sense of entitlement, thank you for summing it up so succinctly.

By coming 5th or 6th.

I never want to see us in the Europa League again. If it's not top 4, it's got to be 7th or worse. If we lose on Sunday I'll actually be hoping we drop the necessary points to fall out of the Europa League spots.
The only thing being that it does carry that CL spot from next season.

Wait, what? What has us qualifying for the Champions league got to do with Arsenal winning a trophy? In today's game the FA Cup or league cup comes second to champions league football for so many reasons. Would you seriously prefer to win a cup and go nowhere financially or would you rather qualify for a Champions league campaign and help the club grow in stature? Have such a higher revenue, be able to keep our best players and attract a better class of signing? Can you not see the difference? Wigan won a cup last year but got relegated. Is that success?

If we lose to but qualify for Europa will I be booing? Yeah ok mate? :/

Modern fan of spurs or in general? And tell, what's my sense of entitlement? Where did I suggest we were entitled to anything? My point is the CL is much better than the EL. Everyone knows it and our managers main aim every season now is to come top 4. That's a fact. Does that mean levy has this sense of entitlement too then or does that just mean he knows what it takes for the club to push on and grow further?

I know we won't win the champions league right away, but until we are a champions league regular we will never even be able to think about that kind if thing. We will never be able to build a group of players of a top calibre and be able to keep them together. We will never be able to fight seriously at the top of league for the title. Yeah domestic trophies are nice but the way it is now it's all about the leagu and CL if you want to be a top club and I want to be a top club.

The reason I don't want EL if we fail to qualify for the CL is not because I think we are entitled to CL, never said anything of the sort. It's because it makes it so much more difficult to qualify for next years CL if you're in it. Can you understand that?

What is it you are trying to argue here?

I'm pointing out that there is a point behind competing in the Europa League from next season as the winners qualify for the CL. You knew that didn't you? Maybe it was the way I worded my post.

For what it's worth, it's clearly not me with the low standards. The crux of what you're arguing is EL is good, don't you know we used to be really shit? Qualifying for EL used to be a great huge success, so I'm gonna be happy with that. That's enough progression for me. CL? Ha, we used to be so shit. EL will do me, you can fuck off and try to qualify for CL with your low standards, I'll be here playing Ludogrets in Bulgaria.

Do you literally have no ambition?

I don't think this forum could get any worse, the way people are going on you'd think we were bottom of the league or Hyde FC.

Ah right I see. Point is though CL qualification is much more attainable by coming 4th as it is by winning the EL. We've been so close to top 4 on a number of occasions now and I think if we had no EL those years we'd have qualified for it. It's not as if it's being unrealistic when we are finishing a point or two off. Lose the distraction of EL and we'd be there. We can do it. Winning the EL would be much more difficult IMO

God decides to punish you for your past sins and does a 'Groundhog Day' on you. Forcing you to live it (take your pick of games) over again and again.

Isn't that already happening? I reckon after the gooners on Sunday and then our trip to Anfield I'll feel like Bill Murray.

It's pretty funny seeing how many of you can't be bothered with the EL when the fact remains that winning it would clearly be a sign of progress an achievement for us given that we've not managed to get beyond the quarter finals in any of our attempts since 2006/2007.

That's a well reasoned argument. The only point I'd make is that our inability to remain in contention for a CL place could just as easily be put down to poor defending, a lack of invention in midfield, not enough goals and some unfortunate/unfair dismissals in key games.

I was yanking your chain a little with the modern fan and booing comments, no hard feelings I hope. ;)

I fundamentally disagree with your point about CL or nothing, I have the very same conversations with my son and we can't agree either. I think we've both laid out our points and aren't going to meet anywhere in the middle. Me? I'd rather we gave 100% in every competition we enter rather than cherry pick but hey ho.

His point is that you can''t give 100% in every competition, and our involvement in the EL has resulted in poor league performances. That hampers us from even being involved in the competitions that really matter ( the PL title and the Champions League).

Continued involvement in the EL is detrimental to our higher ambitions.

Fucking top post. I agree 100%. Some people forget what football is supposed to be about.

How can this get worse? By Spurs fans turning into whiney, entitled, bitter fuck bags, being graceless and spoilt about it, and making Liverpool fans look like level headed paragons of footballing virtue.

Thankfully what I see/hear in reality is generally less hysterical than it is in the blogosphere.
