Hmmm. I must be the only one that actually rate him on here. Very good off the ball, relatively secure passer and defensively solid. A clear upgrade on Parker. Having said that, don't think we should go for him.

I agree, he's so good I never want him near a ball in a Spurs shirt

Really don't understand this at all.

Whilst he isn't a bad player, he's not great one either and will certainly be on a downwards spiral given his age.

He wouldn't be coming for free and will most likely be on a high wage wanting at least a 2 year deal.

That would still be huge money - There must be dozens of up and coming players that we could get instead that would give us similar performance levels but with far more potential.

Yes experience would replace experience but it would still strike me as a very odd signing.

I think the journos seem to have forgotten we changes managers a year ago, this time last year under 'arry the story would have been credible "top, top lad" but not now thankfully.

It's easily explained as newspaper bullshit.

He has a contract with City that is huge. Why would Spurs buy him? He'd cost a lot in fees and wages, for what? A 32 yr old carthorse midfielder when the club is getting rid of another 32/33 yr old centre midfielder.

IF it's come down to this then we have problems ................

Would rather accept that we have to plan for the future than swoop for Barry, which appears to be a sticking plaster on a whole that isn't there

l sincerely hope this is bollocks. Why waste resources on a defensive midfielder when it is arguably our strongest postion?

No way!!

I think AVB ask for Capoue and Levy propose Barry...:ROFLMAO:

How can we be better off if we sell Parker and Livermore for Barry? Spurs is not a retirement home.

I would not be against the idea if he took a wage cut

The guy is a leader, captained Villa, and he is a winner - premiership, so he could be our Gallas and look what a good job he did for us. Can cover a few positions too.

If we are 1-0 down to Stoke with 20 mins to go he is the sort of old pro with a winning mentality that could stop young heads from dropping

Can cover full back, CM and LM

If it was just as a backup to Sandro, I'd prefer to keep Parker for another season. Parker came back from his injury and went straight into the team and in my opinion, he needed a bit more time to get back up to speed. He did improve towards the end of the season but Sandro should be playing every minute of every game when he's back.

I don't have problem with us looking for an experienced backup if Parker leaves though, after all, Sandro is still a young tallent and it wouldn't make much sense to get another player of similar age.

Any word on Sandro's return? Last I heard he wouldn't be fit until October and we can't assume he'll go straight back to being SANDRO! so we could use some cover/insurance there.

Barry, of course, is not the answer.

From Express.

Sunderland look to Scott Parker as midfielder faces Tottenham exit

SCOTT PARKER is being targeted by Sunderland as Tottenham look set to make a surprise swoop for Gareth Barry.

No improvement.... mad choice.

I'm sure even Spurs are surprised to find out they are signing slowcoach.

Would have been a decent signing a few years ago. Plays in a similar way to Carrick, although not perhaps as good defensively as him. His passing is good, his positioning is good and he has a good level of composure.

People always have a go at him because of his lack of pace, but Carrick was never quick and neither were other players in that similar deep-lying passer role (Alonso, Pirlo etc). Occasionally he slows down a move unnecessarily but I certainly don't regard him as a bad player.

Assuming that we go 4-3-3 we need:

2 x defensive midfielders (Sandro and Parker)
2 x passing midfielder (Dembele and Carroll/Huddlestone)
2 x attacking midfielder/playmaker (Holtby and Sigurdsson)

Barry at his peak would have been an upgrade on Carroll or Huddlestone I think, but don't think that's necessarily the case anymore. There's also an argument that if that's the formation we're going to play, then the midfielder alongside Sandro needs to be a bit more mobile, but I don't think it's the completely ludicrous suggestion that this thread seems to suggest.
