No, not of a cup run, just of where we currently are.
I'd love a cup run but I'm not gonna lose my shit after four games under a new manager and a whole new system.
Yes, it sucks that we're out but some of the over-reactions have been preposterous, especially considering that it was roundly agreed that we need to be a bit patient at present,
my main issue, isnt with the result really. More the state of our squad outside the 1st 11-13 players. Rest a few players and the drop off in quality is alarming.

I thought Skipp looked confused about what he’s meant to do, Perisic was shit apart from his assist and Solomon was invisible.

The real worry was GLC, we needed a player to always show for the ball in midfield and he just wasn’t it tonight. Maybe he needs to play with better players but he did him selves no favours tonight.
It was a very typical competitive and intense English football match. I'm just not sure GLC is cut out for them.

I know everyone is starved to win something but bottom line is getting back to CL has to be number one priority for this club going forward and that means League takes priority.

It hurts like hell to lose but willing to bet Ange learned a lot more tonight about his squad than he would have by playing majority of his top 11. Certain players that put on in training certainly failed to impress in an actual match. He will now have full clarity on what this squad needs going forward and what players he can trust for our league games.

This is a false economy. World Class players elevate everyone around them. Bissouma and Maddison make the game easier for the likes of Sarr, Porro, Udogie etc...

When you take all of that out of midfield it affects the levels of the entire 11.

unless Ange's plan was to decide whether Pierre and Lo Celso are world class I don't get the thinking. We could have just told him - and pointed out that's why the club are open to selling them :shifty:

Not gonna lie.. thats fucked me right off.

We better beat burnley after all these changes
That’s what frustrates me as well. Historically we make wholesale changes for a cup game and then go and tank the next league fixture. Just destroys any momentum.

Fair enough guess there’s nothing to discuss about the team selection or the performance then. Let’s close the thread down. It happens.
Genuinely think that would be for the best.

(Of course people can criticise - but ultimately we lost on a penalty shootout. We won the last two we had against Chelsea and Wolves, and they didn't mean anything about the season ahead either.)

The fact we created maybe two good opportunities to score against the defence that already has nearly 10 xG conceced in 3 PL games this season especially without Leno was most dissapointing today.

On the District line heading to Blackfriars after the game. Still not sure why he changed so many. VDV is a player , was down the side watching it and when he comes at you at speed he’s horrible to play against. Was limping after one challenge though . Felt a bit sorry for lo celso having skipp and Hoijberg playing with him rather than Sarr and Bissouma. I think his attitude wasn’t right though, had his head down a lot .
Frustrated and annoyed but at least there’s no doubting anyone at the club that the squad although bloated is very thin on talent after the first 12-14 players.

Massive reality check for Big Ange. Realistically this was the only game so early on the season where he would get a chance to see his squad. Obviously, changed a bit too much. Same players that have been letting us down for years are still making the same type of errors like they did for the previous managers.

I think bar maybe Solomon, i don't think a single squad player actually suits Ange's tactics. We looked much closer to Conte/Jose ball than what we have been used to seeing in the first few games.

Disappointing for sure as now we only have one cup to play for and it's not even September yet but if Ange was having 2nd thoughts about keeping some of these players i hope he has now seen the light.

Up to Levy/Munn to bring in 2/3 players in for Ange cause the drop off from 1st 11 to squad is bottom half/relegation candidates. Using 1/2 amongst the first team you can get away with but playing them all together and it was always going to be on result. I'm sure Ange will have learnt his lesson. Next game is a must win for me now.

Make that fucking gamble in the league then, and not when we're at risk of getting knocked out of one of two trophies we can actually win!
This. It's so bloody obvious. And you certainly don't make 9 changes to test out players in a must-win game. Bring 3 or 4 in at a time throughout the league -- or against lower league teams in the cups.

Vicario in goal and fancy we win those pens

Worst performance from a keeper in a shootout I’ve ever seen. Knew he was never going get near one let alone save one

Back down to earth.
Frustrating as fuck to have gone out but a game to finally highlight those who aren't good enough, Daniel (COYS),a real mixed bag of those who don't really fit, those who want out, those who did well pre season, those who just need moving on..
Ange thrives on adversity but he needs to be given some more technical, intelligent, skillful players to work with.

Onwards.

That’s true but even if you improve the backups making 9 changes is very risky if wanting to progress. The backups will always be less match fit, they’ll also have less understanding with each other as a unit. It will always be a bit of mishmash. As a club though everything over the last decade+ points towards us not really caring about the domestic cups.
I think as a fan base the majority want just 4th place too, personally and maybe it’s cos I’m getting older but I’m desperate to see us lift a cup at Wembley again.
