Going by the lack of game time for Kaboul, Chiriches and Floppio, and Vertonghen's mystery illness... we'll need 3 new centre backs at the rate we're going.

Would this be alongside Wimmer or instead of? Also isn't he Swiss I keep hearing people mention he is German.

I have heard a lot about him and he has a great reputation but haven't seen a lot personally. If it was instead of Wimmer I have some concerns.

Firstly, and I know this is simplistic,but for a free agent with a great reputation I'm wondering why only West Ham have shown interest.

I'm also wondering why he is more hyped or known than Wimmer. Is it because he has played in the CL And EL with Basel And played for Switzerlan? If so could that not miscues people's judgement on him.

Basel are by far and away the best team in a weak Swiss league and so consequently he will look good. Whereas Wimmer plays in a top league for an average club yet has played regularly in a tight defense but hasn't had the same exposure as they are not in the CL.

If he is instead of Wimmer are there any people that have seen both play to say who they think is better?

I haven't seen much of Wimmer, but Schar is quality for his age.

Also, Don't forget this is Wimmers first season in a decent league, so he only has 27 games v decent oppo, where as Schar has about that in CL group & Int matches, which would be a higher standard (bar Bayern).

Every time I've watched him play he looks a class act. Bit puzzled though as to how he is still at Basel and being linked with West Ham... Anyone more informed shed some light as to why no-one has moved for him, is there a story behind it or has his development stalled etc? Iirc he was strongly rumoured to be off to Dortmund a year or so back.

That's cool I just feel that as some else mentioned with Vlad playing in the CL isn't the same as the PL. And getting in the CL via a weak league isn't a good indication of someone's ability so I am sceptical in that sense. If you say Schar is quality from what you've watched then that's cool.

Chiriches has only played 3 CL qualifiers, which were against lower EL quality opposition (1 game vs Vardar from Macedonia & 2 games vs Tbilisi, only 2-3 weeks before we smashed them 5-0 & 3-0 in the EL qualifiers).

Schar has played 2 seasons in a row in the group stage of the CL (playing teams like Real, Liverpool, Porto, Chelsea & Schalke) so it isn't really comparable. Also, Basel qualified from the group stage this season, with a group consisting of Real, Liverpool & Razgrad, which is a good achievement.

Yes, in the Europa League. Schar also played against Chelsea in the EL that season as well as us.

People moaned at the time because of the Arsenal connection, but Gallas was a brilliant signing.

I genuinely think Gallas is the second best defender we've had in my lifetime (mid 90s), after Ledley.

I don't understand why people WANT Vertonghen out. Expect him to leave is one thing, but... Thing about Verts, once he again plays for a good, winning team with legitimate CL prospects, he will be extremely good. He is motivated by winning, as are many great sports people.

I think Vertonghen has been good for us but think because he is able to bring the ball out of defense he looks like a better defender. He needs to defend better IMO

The problem with Vertonghen is that in reality he isn`t really very good at his primary job, i.e defending.
