Tottenham transfers: West Ham risk seeing rivals gazump them for Basel centre-back Fabian Schar

Hammers have opened the door by putting player moves on hold until they know who their manager will be next season PLUS: Spurs eye German starlet

Tottenham are ready to hijack neighbours West Ham's move for Basel defender Fabian Schar - as the Hammers have put transfers on hold until they resolve their managerial situation.

West Ham have been keen on the talented 23-year-old for some time.

The Swiss centre-back's contract expires this summer - although he does have a one-year option, triggered if certain clauses are met.

Schar has Champions League and Europa League experience, and has 12 caps for his country, including two appearances at the World Cup finals last summer.

@Bus-Conductor - You rate him a lot, IIRC?

Dunno if he's right for us or not but Christ, I would have thought he could do a lot better than that lot.

No point in this transfer now that we have Dier, imo. We should be targeting a proper upgrade (senior player) or a young left footed cb.

I agree with the targeting a senior player part. I don't care what foot they use though.

Would prefer Howedes, but that's looks unlikely, so Schar is by far the best CB we could realistically sign.

Seems a no-brainer, he'll slot straight in to the first team.

Still think we need a naybet-esk signing for cb this summer. And for centre midfield too for that matter.

Schar is a beast, a physical warrior and has really good footballing ability. Could see him being a first team player, and if he costs nothing...it's a no-brainer!

Would love Höwdes but that is more unlikely I think, this guy would be ideal!!!

If Vertonghen is unwilling to commit, I'd be very happy for us to sign Schar and I think he's a great fit for the Premier League. I'd also like us to add Howedes in addition, although that is probably a bit too ambitious in one window.

I'm confused as to why Schär would not be a senior or proper player? Experience from CL & the national team, too.

Which is why we will never see him in a spurs shirt

I just think 23 is still relatively young for a centerback. He has also still only been in Basel's side since 2012. While he has experience in the CL and some at the international level, I don't think it can cover for his lack of experience in playing a few seasons in a top league.

So that is 3 years and 60+ matches for maybe one of the top 15, for sure one of the top 20 clubs in Europe?

The way I see it, the Swiss league is an absolute rollover for Fc Basel. They have won it 8 of the last 11 years, including the last 5 in a row. To me, he only really has valuable experience from his time in the CL and his international experiences. I honestly view him as having similar experience to Chiriches when he joined us. I would also consider Chiriches to have been inexperienced when he joined (and still largely to an extent).

Would this be alongside Wimmer or instead of? Also isn't he Swiss I keep hearing people mention he is German.

I have heard a lot about him and he has a great reputation but haven't seen a lot personally. If it was instead of Wimmer I have some concerns.

Firstly, and I know this is simplistic, but for a free agent with a great reputation I'm wondering why only West Ham have shown interest.

I'm also wondering why he is more hyped or known than Wimmer. Is it because he has played in the CL And EL with Basel And played for Switzerlan? If so could that not miscues people's judgement on him.

Basel are by far and away the best team in a weak Swiss league and so consequently he will look good. Whereas Wimmer plays in a top league for an average club yet has played regularly in a tight defense but hasn't had the same exposure as they are not in the CL.

If he is instead of Wimmer are there any people that have seen both play to say who they think is better?

Sign both, problem solved (y)

But in seriousness, Schar and Wimmer in and Chiriches, Kaboul and Faz out would be a great window

Looks good when I've seen him but due to not being proven in a top league there's a big risk involved. Gotta trust the recruitment guys on deals like this, but we do tend to make quite a few of these types of signings for a club of our size and ambition.

Howedes would be the better buy due to the risk factor, and I dont see why it's "unrealistic". If we can sign Holtby we can sign Howedes. Seems Levy's 'sell on fee' type strategy has brainwashed some fans into thinking we cant actually bring top quality experienced players into our football club.
