So, we've been hearing a lot about him recently, so here's a thread (I searched and saw the last was closed) to talk about why you do or don't want him:

Source: The Mirror

Benoit Assou-Ekotto is on the brink of joining filthy-rich Monaco – with Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas eyeing Real Madrid left-back Fabio Coentrao as his replacement, writesthe Sunday People.

Spurs boss AVB will allow Assou-Ekotto to leave White Hart Lane, as Sunday People Sport revealed in January, and Monaco are making a move to sign the Cameroon international, provided they can sort out a major tax row.
Villas-Boas wants to bring in his fellow Portuguese Coentrao, as long as Spurs secure a top-four finish.

If they fail to qualify for the Champions League, then Tottenham’s England Under-21 star Danny Rose will be likely to start next season as the club’s first-choice left-back, after a season-long loan at Sunderland.
Either way, Assou-Ekotto will be off in the summer and is keen to join Monaco in a lucrative deal.
Monaco are top of France’s second flight, under former Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieri, with their Russian billionaire owner Dmitri Rybolovlev ready to make a huge summer investment to challenge Paris St-Germain.

Am i right in thinking Coentrao cost over £25m Euro, not sure what they would want for him, can't see The Levy paying over £10m for an LB..

Yeah, I've seen most reports throwing around a £15-16m figure.

But, the question then becomes, if you think he's a Leighton Baines type of LB that will create endless chances and still be good in defense, is it worth the extra money? In my opinion, yes. But is he a Leighton Baines type creator/defender? Tough to say.

Only 24, and we could realistically fund the move by selling the two LBs that are currently on our books (BAE/Rose).

I agree with the funding idea, if our full backs are going to provide the width next season then i would say yes he is a good investment, the other side of that though is we need our value for money, by that i mean a £15m LB needs to be pretty on the ball defensively, pay £6m and you expect some mistakes unless an A***** Cole is uncovered.

brilliant player but out of our league in terms of wages and fee, would cost at least 20mln as real madrid payed 30 when they signed him, would rather spend that on a striker

Well early on Coentrao was unhappy, Mou was picking Marcelo and Fabio was getting very little playing time and wanted out. Real miight also have been wondering why they spent 30 mill euros on a left back that was hardly playing. Since Marcelo got injured though he's been playing a lot and playing well

He's be a great signing -not just as a lb he can also put in a decent shift at LW but do Real want to sell, does Fabio still want to leave and what would Real want -is roughly £15/16 mill the figure being speculated enough and even if it was would Levy pay that for a LB given we have a few priorities this summer

I'd love it, I've never been a fan of Benny's anyway so just upgrading on him would be great but to get a real quality player like Coentrao would be tremendous. I just don't see it happening though.

Far more chance of Siqueira or Cissokho if we are looking in La Liga for LB's

He gets in the team at Madrid. He won't be moving to spurs.
Actually no. Marcelo is first choice LB so he doesn't get in to the first XI which is what counts. He'd defo make our first XI though. Such an attack minded player he would fit perfectly to our counter-attacking game. Hope there's some substance to this.

I did a bit of research, it looks like he gets 2 million Euro's a year , I dunno how much that would be a week, around 38k a week I'm guessing. It's one of those transfer story's that seems a bit of a fantasy, yet stranger things have happened.

I agree with this. Coentrao has all the ability to be a world class left midfielder or even winger. He was standout player at the euros for Portugal imo, and is very skilful.

Plus he's arguably more creative than any player in our current squad.

Would absolutely love this to be true, but he plays a fair amount of games for Madrid. I'm also sure there would be a lot of other top club teams that would like to have him on board.
