I don't get what happened to his form last season under Conte? I guess that goes for pretty much everyone bar Bentancur, Kane & Kulusevski though.

The system is killing us but Conte won’t change it. It’s madness as it clearly doesn’t suit the players and it’s not just Dier who is struggling.

fair point but I think the system also exposes those who aren’t good enough to play it. Let’s face it we have far too many passengers or upgradeable players in our starting eleven. Other teams typically have maybe one or two, we seem to have way more. When everyone plays well we get by ok but as soon as anyone drops off in form we’re fucked.

I don’t think we can blame “the system” for Dier’s loss of form. We were all in agreement before this period that this system was the perfect one for him, with his lack of significant experience playing in a 4 at the back.

Dier’s problem is a psychological one (like Sessegnon, for eg.) Specifically, his concentration has been poor since he won his England recall; aside from glaring errors against likes of Liverpool & Brentford, the number of smaller mis-steps or cases of poor judgement has increased markedly. He clearly had quite a bit of good credit with Conte coming into this period of poor form; but he needs to get his head straight quickly. Hopefully having Romero and Lenglet in good form on either side of him can help. (I’m not optimistic we will sign a top-rank CCB in January.)

Exactly. Our players are struggling with the system. A wise manager would tweak the system.

If the system doesn’t minimise the flaws of our weaker players, it really needs to maximise the strengths of our best players. Unfortunately, it really isn’t doing that either - so why are we sticking with it?

He doesn't get pressed.

He's got the easiest job and the most space in the entire system; he just doesn't have the guile to utilise it.
What I meant was opposition presses our backline to give him less time on the ball.

I think he just panics when put under pressure, which is understandable.

No pressure for that left footed hoof into the crowd and give away the corner.
Albeit that wasn't the main problem. Marking at corners isn't good either.

Some random stats popped up on SSN today and was surpised that Dier was second in the leage for passes completed and touches.

Really surpirsing to me and not really what we would want as a team....is he being asked to do too much? is he being pulled in too many directions.

I still think he could be a quality player but he has been woeful for a while...I just know we sell him and we are looking at a Trippier situation. He would od very very well with the right system and his head in the right place. Not working for him at all at the moment though.

He is the spare man in a back three so no surprise.

Are his passes decisive ? Brave? Are they helping us cut through teams? That's the info behind the state we would need to judge if he is doing that part of his job.

His form dropped after Frankfurt away when there was video of him limping off after the game. Guess it's not a coincidence

I agree. Could you make a list of players who we have who you think are upgradable?

I'd go with this:

I'd go with this:

Anyone who isn't world class is upgradable and arguably Kane is the only world class player we have. A few have world class potential for sure and you wouldn't sell them. We won't sign ready made world class though so need more of the likes who could be world class. More like Romero, Kulusevski and Bentancur to replace the ones who will never be (Dier, Davies, Moura). That was how we formed our best squad by signing Eriksen, Vertonghen, Alderweireld, Dembele, Wanyama at the right time. They then developed together and became top players. It's really about selling the ones who are beyond their peak and not good enough with younger players who are (yet can still get even better).

Let's get realistic.
We all agree that upgrades to defence are necessary but we need back-up to those players to cover injury suspensions etc. In short you need a squad.
Whether people like it or not we have other CBs that are inferior to Dier - they need to go first.
Giving him a new contract but not with a guarantee of playing time to me is a sensible option - he always gives his best, even if sometimes his best does not reach the level we desire.

I don't understand how there is anyone out there that can defend Dier. Hes had one solid season in his last 4 and a half. Hes got too many mental scars, he can't play in a 4, hes slow, doesnt turn very well, under pressure hes weak with the ball, not overly dominant in the air. Hes an okay passer when he has time and he seems like a good person.

He's not good, never will be good and we are wasting our time. He is 28. I love Conte but if he continues to play or build around Dier he's lost it.

A large part of Spurs issue is our centre backs and not just because they are weak defensively but they are not dominant with the ball and stopping transition that allows us to push up the pitch.

Our best transition defender is Sanchez but his confidence is on the floor and he can't pass either.
