People seem to forget that he was good enough for our best ever defensive seasons in the Premier League. Most of those ten years, he’s been a key player.
Maybe he was always a total fraud. We could have plugged just about anybody into the role he played with Vertonghen, Alderweild, and Dembele surrounding them and they would have made most all of them look good.

Dier is a great professional, a good personality it seems, and a hard worker. Unfortunately he's not a top 4/league chasing teams CB.

Like Davies, he could be a decent squad option for a team with lofty ambitions, but he isn't a starter for a top team.

We need someone who is calm, collected, and the voice of the team back there, Dier just seems to be in a panic all the time.

For me, I would like to see an older head come in and play alongside lenglet and Romero, similar to when we brought in Naybet all those years ago.

We are lacking a leader back there.

well said, we had so many elite players in that team, it can a lot easier to cover up a players failings, when dier has been a key part of a team, his shown not to be up to the level, he cant even get into the england 11, behind a man utd defender who cant make there side

Been saying for years , he always has a mistake in him . Personally the club should have sacked him the day he walked into the crowd and offered out one of our own fans . How is he still at the club is behind me , to think Man Utd we’re willing to buy him for £50m a few years ago !!!! No type of error from him is a surprise . Twice this season he has misontrolled a simple 6 yard pass on the edge of our box .

Since coming back from his England recall he has been responsible for three conceded goals that started with him being in possession of the ball unchallenged. That is quite terrible form.

Frankfurt - An awful touch from a Romero pass as the last man gives possession to Frankfurt who scores. On another night it could have easily been the beginning of the end of our CL campaign.

Man United - A high loose ball comes to him in his own half and he decides to chest the ball to Hojbjerg, a move that clearly wasn’t on and United counterattacks and scores.

Liverpool - A ball which ironically could have been chested down was headed straight to the path of Salah. His second assisted goal to Salah having given him a 1 on 1 at Anfield in 2017.

I would also argue that he could have rushed back for the Wilson goal, instead of holding his hands up in the air with no goalkeeper behind him.

The above list would have been pretty damning for a season summary, let alone a 3 week cameo.
1st game back and we can add a fourth goal to the list of goals we’ve conceded this season that started with him having the ball unchallenged.

He had a good period in midfield alongside Dembele (playing alongside must have been a dream and no doubt made life much easier) and with Vertonghen and Alderweireld behind him. Without the quality of those three around, think he has been exposed as being a pretty ordinary player at best and one who just can't be relied upon.

Just frustrating still seeing him as a first team regular after all this time. Depressing seeing us go from the likes of Vertonghen and Alderweireld to Dier Yes, they were never going to be easy to replace and we've done really well to get Romero in but we desperately someone to replace Dier. Bored of seeing the likes of him, Davies and Sanchez turn out for us and a decent run here and there is not going to change my mind They are the level of player we'd see turn out for us in defence in the darks days of the 90s.

He just can't lead the line, he is fine as a deputy. Today highlighted his limitations in controlling the defense. We were an absolute organizational mess (though Hugo being out added to that).

It’s not just Dier though, is it? That first half was atrocious. No pace, no desire, no tempo and so many of the team looking like the last thing they wanted was the ball to feet. They look like a bunch of strangers just chucked together with no real idea as to what each other is going to do.

Take the pressure off playing so defensively and he’s got a decent out ball if we get our wing backs higher up the pitch.
We need to be more aggressive and on the front foot from the 1st minute throughout the whole team as opposed to soaking up wave after wave for 60 minutes and putting pressure on ourselves.
We didn’t play like this with Jan & Toby, it’s why they looked so good as they didn’t have to do that much but what they did have to do they done imperiously.
Not defending some of the stuff he’s done recently but he probably does more defensive work than the other ‘big 6’ CB’s do in three games combined.

What happened to the Dier from battle of the bridge and the one who made that famous tackle on Ramos. I can handle him booting a ball out for a corner if he played the rest of the 90mins with fight and aggression. He just looks so shaky or just disinterested every game. I’m not sure it’s a good marker but in his last 3 seasons in the PL he’s had 5 bookings, in his first 3 seasons he had 20. He doesn’t play aggressively enough for me anymore and that’s all I really rated him for.

Watching us play today its really incredible how Conte got us top 4 last season. Our defence gives goals away every game through basic errors. These are the same players coached by Jose and Conte who are arguably 2 of the best defensive coaches in the world. If those two can't get them to defend properly no one can.

I can't blame Dier he is a limited player and everyone knows this. We need 3/4 defenders in the next couple of windows. I'm afraid now we are going to be left behind Arsenal, Chelsea who we had edged ahead of last season form wise. Add to that the likelihood Liverpool, Utd, City and Newcastle will all spend, I'm concerned we will struggle to even make top 6 consistently .

He does all the right things in training and says all the right things behind closed doors. When it comes to the actual matches on the pitch he freezes up like a deer in headlights and makes crucial mistakes at the most inopportune times.

He's been this way through 5 different mangers across the past 8 years. He's not changing and he's nowhere near good enough to help us get where we want to go. I hope Conte comes to his senses and realizes this and finally shows him the door.

It's not just the errors. He's so slow to play it out all the movement in front of him stops, allowing the opposition reset everytime, before he lets the ball go.

Is that to do with lack of options, or just being slower at times though?

2016/17 season, long time ago and he weren't even playing cb
Imagine being this confidently wrong that you ‘correct’ others without taking a second to verify the facts.

Wanyama had replaced him as CM by that point, and he’d moved into a back three with Vertonghen and Alderweireld.

ok even so, its a long time ago, Vertonghen and Alderweireld were awesome that season, but certainly don't want them in my team now, why must we always hold onto players for far too long, shows why we arent a serious club, a average players gets called out and people bring up a season 5 years ago to defend him, our standards are in the gutter

There's only so many times you're going to make a run when the ball is static.

It goes hand in hand, but the forwards know they aren't going to get it quickly. When we had Toby back there it was a different story.

He cocks up so many long balls out as well. Lenglet is 10x the passer Dier is but he hardly ever attempts a 50 yard pass, most likely because he realises it probably won't come off. Instead, he gets the ball to somebody in space. Dier simply coughs up possession time after time. Needs to do the basics and leave the flash stuff to others.

I wasn’t the one who brought up his record over a decade?

Fwiw he was our best CB under Mourinho, and our best CB under Conte prior to the last ~ten games.
