Romero, Davies and Lloris regressed this year and he looks worse. Should be a backup CCB, not good enough passer and not consistent enough. I guess his Portuguese might be useful if we get Porro. We could really use someone Cahill, never amazing but consistent and reliable.

I don't understand how there is anyone out there that can defend Dier. Hes had one solid season in his last 4 and a half. Hes got too many mental scars, he can't play in a 4, hes slow, doesnt turn very well, under pressure hes weak with the ball, not overly dominant in the air. Hes an okay passer when he has time and he seems like a good person.

He's not good, never will be good and we are wasting our time. He is 28. I love Conte but if he continues to play or build around Dier he's lost it.

A large part of Spurs issue is our centre backs and not just because they are weak defensively but they are not dominant with the ball and stopping transition that allows us to push up the pitch.

Our best transition defender is Sanchez but his confidence is on the floor and he can't pass either.
There was a time, probably for a couple of seasons, where he looked like developing into a really classy DM. That game for England against Germany where Dier and Dele (who he?) completely imposed themselves was pretty much the apex. We might never know the true extent of how his abdominal problems affected him, but he just seems to have regressed so badly.

One of the problems, I think, is there is no real answer to the question 'what is Eric Dier's best position?'. He just doesn't seem to have one. Neither a CB, LCB, nor DM. He's clearly a well read and cultured chap, so maybe Head of Spurs Museum of Football?

Romero is our best transition defender and by a mile

If Dier played like he did at the end of last season and the start of this its easy to defend him as he was our best defender. There's no doubt however that for the last few months he's not looked the same player. Its such a massive drop in form that I'm actually wondering if he's still carrying the ankle injury he picked up in the Champions league. His confidence is also shot which is probably not helped by our fanbase constantly slagging him off. Whilst it is easy to defend him I also feel that he needs a break from the team

Genuine discussion point - if it wasn’t for Wout Faes double own goal disaster class would Dier be in the worst form of all CBs in the league this season? Genuinely can’t think of many CBs with as many errors leading to a goal as him, especially of top half sides

I’ve given Dier enough chances now. I have defended him plenty times yet he hasn’t defended the team well enough. Just when I think he’s showing some quality he lets me down. Unfortunately his bad decisions seem to always get punished which exasperates the problem. He’s not going to improve now so time to move him on.

Dier was really bad against Villa … oh I’m told he didn’t play. Still it’s all his fault anyway that Spurs are rubbish and play rubbish football.

Really interesting analysis on how he was used yesterday on MOTD2. He came out of defence to act as a holding mid to allow Hojbjerg to press higher up the pitch. A reverse of when he dropped from CDM to CB in Poch's best team.

It enabled us to be more aggressive in the press, which lead to the goal. More please ?

Hopefully that impressive performance heralds a return to form. If we can get him and Sonny firing properly it will make for an exciting run in.

I was watching the game on Tv yesterday, and right before the goal, Carragher (or Neville maybe) actually said that we beat City in Pep’s first game, but it was during the Poch era when our press was so intense that’s how we beat teams, and that this Conte team didn’t press in the same way, then right on cue Hojbjerg wins the ball back high up and puts Kane away. When they analysed it afterwards, you actually see Dier stepping out of defence regularly to make a 5 man midfield, 343 became 4141/451 out of possession with Dier shutting down Bernardo Silva’s space. Tactically quite smart to see, and quite disciplined to keep up.

Good to see him back in form and interesting that he was pushing up into a defensive midfield role at times.

Was nice to see us engage in a bit of tactical fluidity, can't say I was expecting Eric to be the aggressor though (he played the role well).

I wonder if we'll see more of this to stop us being outnumbered in the mid.

Carragher actually spotted it and pointed it out during the game, but overall that piece of analysis on MOTD last night - about Dier and Haaland - was one of the most interesting and insightful bits of tactical analysis I've seen in a long time.

That's the only thing I want pundits to do - tell me something I didn't already know. Give me some insight into the tactical side of the game. MOTD did that really well last night. Everything else is just noise.

i agree about the pundits but also why i think they really need to start bringing in some people like James Horncastle or Michael Cox and so on. Not ex footballers but ones who love the sport and the tactics and can highlight what is actually going on, rather than just blurting out rubbish and a bit of bants.

Dier will always be below average. Never forget.

Even if he puts in a run till the end of the season under a new manager where he only has 1 or 2 more errors don't forget he isn't good enough.

We will be right back here in 12 months time if he has to play any significant time for us as a club.

Lol just read the last page to what’s about to come, fair to say he’s not back to form.
