How can a team be so inconsistent not only from 1 match to the next but even during matches?

Anderson lost the plot today and has been woeful all tournament. Our batsmen cannot take advantage of the batting power plays. And more worryingly, from winning positions we have failed to get over the line against India, Ireland and Bangladesh. We have snatched defeat/draw from the jaws of victory.

What is going on?

Anderson can be a great bowler but he is a bottle job imo.

I wouldnt play him. You just dont know what Jimmy will turn up. Tremlett for me.

IMO they are being flogged to death. Less than a week at home since the end of October for some of them.

The conditions don't suit Anderson. He is a reverse swing bowler and his game doesn't suit that continent. Look at Bangladesh line-up with four, yes four spinners.

As A&C also points out, the core of this squad are burnt out. Broad has broken down twice, as has Pietersen. They are knackered and focus is being lost at crucial moments.

The 7 match one day series here highlighted that. After such an epic, mammoth showing in the Ashes, a lot of these players are sttugging to raise their game for one-dayers.

Lose Thursday and we're out. Probably a good thing in some respects, some of these players have been in the UK for maybe 5 days since last October. Living in each others pockets and out of suitcases, OK they are well paid and get it all laid on but cricket at such an intenisty is bound to produce something, and that's burn out.

The one dayers against the aussies should have been split, 3 before and 4 after the ashes. Our lot have just had enough.

Saying that we'll probably trounce the Windies Thursday !!

Although I agree that the whole side are clearly burnt out and that the conditions do not favour Anderson, I must say that if he wants to be considered one of the best pace bowlers in the world he has to learn to adapt to the conditions more than he currently does. If the ball is not swinging he is unable to do anything, infact the guy can't even bowl a tight line and conceeds far too many wides.

a brilliant batting pitch and not one player in the top 5 gets to 50. i cannot believe how poor we have been.

I can't say i'm surprised at how poor we've been. It's the one thing we've done consistenly during this World Cup. :)

Wow, what a turn around at the end there! West Indies threw it away completely.

Still think changes in the batting order are needed, although lack of options is a problem. Prior should not open (shouldnt be in the squad IMO) and compared to other teams we just dont seem to have anybody who can really muscle the ball to the boundary.

Yeah but having shown the obvious class that we've shown so far in the tournament they may as well give us the trophy now.

This team is shattered. I don't think we should be too hard on them.

Glad we got the win. Can't believe someone said Prior shouldn't be in the squad. He shouldn't open, but he's a good middle-order batsmen.

Of the players remaining, Trott should be opening. Strauss is leading run scorer in the WC and Trott isn't far behind.

Also, I don't think that the 'lower to middle order' has made much of a contribution at all during this competition. If they start to add some runs instead of regularly collapsing it might take some pressure off the bowling.

But yeah, they are shattered, so some slack is in order.

If we do go through, we go out next match :)

With rumours of Cap'n Andy considering retiring from one day games, i wonder if the selectors are going to give Cook another knock as opener once this competition is over? It's been more than a year since he last had a chance and, if he's interested, i think him and Prior could develop a really solid partnership.

There was some poor cricket in that match but it was fucking exciting.

You can't help but feel The West Indies shot themselves up the arse, but credit to England for digging the result out.
