So judging from the responses so far most don't give a shit about our identity and heritage and would prefer us to carry on the way we are.

Over the years we have not overpaid that often for British players. Think of the likes of Huddlestone, Lennon, Dawson, Walker, Carrick, Bale, Rose, Defoe, Keane, Crouch and Parker.

I can only think of Bentley and perhaps Bent where it could be argued we overpaid.

If we identify the talent at the right time, and are willing to take a punt I don't see why we can't continue to buy British talent.

The landscape has changed slightly and you could argue that British talent goes to Manchester City to die these days, but really its a case of getting in there and buying them when the time is right.

For example, I think Carrick was going through a slight lull having burst onto the scene. However he was still young and Arnesen rightly identified him as someone British with talent who was available. I think this happens quite often with highly-regarded kids who struggle early on in their careers to live up to the hype. Another example would be someone like Glen Johnson who ended up at Portsmouth. This is where we have to take our opportunity if we can't get these kids at 17/18.

As much as it pains me to say it, Wenger has done a fantastic job of buying young British talent without overpaying, players like Ramsey, Chamberlain, Walcott and now even Welbeck.

Bit of a loaded question.

Value-wise we have done okay buying British. Over the past decade we have made a trading profit on British players; if you include Bale in that a massive profit.

The correct answer is that having considered the type of player you need and the amount you can afford to pay, you aim to buy British from preference, but if no-one suitable is available you buy an overseas player with PL experience, and if you cannot find someone who fits that bill you take a chance on an overeseas player without PL experience. That is the phiilosphy Arnesen spelt out and it is a good one.

But before you do any of those things you should first look to see if you have a young player already at the club who can step up.

I don't really understand why you're equating heritage = British players.

I mean, Charlie Adam is a British player - do you feel he would represent our identity and heritage?

Why does the alternative to "overpriced British players" have to be "cheap foreign imports"?
What about slightly cheaper, but much better foreign imports?

There are also cheaper British players. For example, Charlie Austin looks a bargain at 6-7 million.

Could you explain in a bit more detail please? How did you reach that conclusion?

I think our main identity has been the great foreign players we've had at the club. Ardiles, Villa, Ginola, Klinsmann etc.

I just think that we should be looking to have a core of British players who actually give shit rather than average, cheap foreign players.

We have a FRENCH captain.Who is shit.

But that has very little to do with him being French.

Our previous club captain was Daws who I felt deep platonic love for. But he was also frequently poor. Despite being English and giving his all.

Are you suggesting a consummate professional like Lloris doesn't care about results or the team because he's foreign?
