Also our best record in a 38 game season was 1995-1996 season and 2005-2006, with 38 goals conceded. It must be stated it was generally a low scoring season. We tended to play three at the back that season - Mabbutt - Campbell - Colinwood.

In 2005-2006 - our Cbs were largly Dawson-King

Our best ever record in the top flight was 1970-1971 where we let in only 33 goals in 42 games. That is a rate of 0.75 goals a game. This season our rate is 0.76 goals a game. We are very close to beating our all time top flight record.

Have we conceded a goal with Rimmer playing ?

I cant seem to recall one but maybe earlier in EL ?

Rimmer! Jimmy Rimmer played in goal for another team, who shall remain nameless...

But back to the post. I love Spurs having a great defence; I watch Spurs without the constant fear that we will concede at any minute. 1-0 is better that 4-4.

a bit harsh, imvho. even Dawson's most dedicated advocates will concede that he's not a fit for this system, but to suggest that his positional sense and reading of the game were 'glaring flaws' is a bit much. he was too slow for it, simple as.

it also strikes me as slightly odd - and this is not a complaint; these are good times and I'll never encourage bitching - that Toby knocks long diagonals left and right, and gets no flack for it, whatsoever. They are, admittedly, a bit better than Daws' were, but at least when Dawson did it, there was usually no one showing for the ball, whereas we currently have far greater ability to build from the back and less need for it when put under a bit of pressure. And while it's true that he wasn't as good on the ball as our current centerhalfs, Vertonghen was/is brilliant with it at his feet, yet he still made as many goal-costing errors under AVB/Tim as Dawson did.

Again, i'm not suggesting that either Toby or Verts now need criticism for such things, but it seemed to me that folks always felt (and apparently still do feel) oddly compelled to have a go at Michael Dawson.* I never quite got that.

*and, obviously, some still feel oddly compelled to defend him.:D:cautious:

On the first (bolded) point, I agree. he was a very brave determined defender who would put his head in where most wouldn't, the heart of a lion. However, even in his heyday he would have been too slow for our current system.

On the second point, I accept that I haven't got any stats to support my view, but my recollection of the Daws angled balls ( ) were that when they didn't hit the man they were over hit and went out of play. At the very least they relieved the pressure on the defence and gave them time to re-organise. For our defence at that time that was often the best way of getting some breathing space.

A much maligned defender, IMHO a Spurs legend.

You are probably right although that would still be a pass made for a specific game plan rather than one of Daws hit and hopes. I do really like the bloke, and could never question his commitment or effort. His decision making (not just his passing) on the other hand was beyond the realms of understanding at times.

Did you just quote yourself and respond to your point with an alternative view??

We've only conceded one goal in our last five league games. Fewest goals conceded in the league last season, fewest goals conceded in the league this season, and also the most clean sheets in the league this season.

If you've seen a better Tottenham defence over the years, speak now or forever hold your peace.

And that's without Rose.

It's the best defence. And it's the best team I've seen since I started supporting Tottenham.

Think it's in top 3 or 4 in the world right now on paper and in terms of performance. Many say Alderweireld is best in league (rightly so) but Vertonghen is right up there too. Another superb performance from Jan who is having a wonderful season.
