Hmmmm tough one.

Whenever I have seen him I have always been impressed but my Shitty supporting friends aren't all that convinced.

Would be good back up. We need a winger who can contribute goals. I have been trying to think of other options for the wings and can't think of many! I would still prefer a winger like Remy who can play as striker if needs be but doesn't look like its happening.

Nope. He's the Defoe version of midfielders. Scores a few goals every now and again but if he doesn't score it's like playing with ten men.

I spent 90 minutes at Peterborough watching him when he was with Boro. He got no joy on the left and ended up swapping over to the right and was equally unimpressive.

He looked tricky and was always looking to take on a man but rarely beat one when Posh were sat back. Looked better on the break when he had time and space with the defence off balance but then what Premiership player doesn't?

As a result I'm still firmly in the 'flatters to deceive' camp too and would rather stick with Townsend who can do a similar job at a fraction of the price.

I agree he is a player who rated higher by other fans than his own and he just doesn't do it for me

Yes! Would be very happy if we signed him. Haven't seen any links yet though saying we are even interested him

Not for me, not at all. Pretty one dimensional, devoid of intelligence and surprisingly lacking in versatility. Doesn't do the donkey work off the ball that AVB would require either. Has a decent number of goals and assists in him but his contribution across 90 minutes isn't up to par for the top 4 standard. He's ideal as a super sub used to take advantage of tired opposition defenders late on, but not someone I would rely on to start regularly. I think Werty makes a good shout above in calling him the Defoe of midfielders.

And in the sense that he plays with his head down too.
Not really a team player and don't think AVB would take to him.
Prefer to stick with Townsend who seems to have a lot of potential
and is worth persevering with.

Similar to what I said about Meireles earlier - not needed as essential but would be a top quality player to have in our squad.

The lack of depth in our squad showed itself toward the back of last season for me - don't get me wrong, we had a lot of Jenas/Pienaar/Kranky/Charlie/Bentley/Gio backup players but none of them are real top-draw midfielders like Johnson who on his day would get in to any PL XI.

Not at all impressed by AJ (lazy) Lennon for me any day, how his not around the England squad amazes me. We should put a decent bid in for McClean at Sunderland.

I find him extremely frustrating. Some people on here think Lennon is, they would be suicidal with Johnson.

Very talented but struggles to make the right decision

Not as talented as Giovani, probably on Townsend's level just some years ahead of him.
Let's put faith in what we got, and rather save up for what we actually need

For me Johnson is first of all a super sub, his overall play isn't all that,
but he has a dangerous left foot and is willing to use it .. all the time

No. Talented player, but poor work rate. Plays on the right of a front 3, where VDV, Lennon and GDS are already set to fight it out.

No way. He has far greater technique and a much quicker brain than Townsend - and always has done.

Is he notoriously lazy? And with regards to being decent around the box i'd wager that's what we need right now.
I can see my view here may be unpopular based on feedback from the first page, but he appears to be useless on the pitch to me. every time I've seen him play he's clueless with little to no work rate,.... he has a few jinky moves, but no quick acceleration or pace to get past defenders regularly. and, it's not like he produces a decent final ball frequently...

IMHO he's just overrated because he's english - he's not even as good as n'zogbia... no thanks
