I thought we were poor first 20 or 30 minutes but after that dominated. He seems to make a difference in drinks breaks.

Always makes the right subs too. Lamela on for Dele for example. Now those that knock him must realise that’s what he meant when he was talking about lack of options off the bench after the Man U game. Pretty obvious.
First 30 mins we were having issues getting the ball into the right lanes and when we did the passing wasn't sharp. I think that was 50 percent because WH had set up very well and were cutting the passing lanes off, secondly probably because Alli and Lo Celso were not as sharp, also Sissoko is not the player for these situations. Jose definitely did something in that talk because we started getting past their screen.

I actually really enjoyed that performance bar the 5 mins before our goal. I was relaxed early stages as I could see why we had problems yet our shape was still good.

If Son's goal had have counted I think we'd have racked a few up as we scored our first just as we were tiring.

I've been much more optimistic with Jose since the restart, you can see players are buying into his ideas, he's defining his shape and system, new partnerships are being built. Going forward we need to ensure we don't drop too deep too soon and find a way to get Alli firing again.

I think some real positives the last two matches, mainly we look much more solid than we ever have done and without a solid base you will rarely win anything.
I like the dier & Sanchez partnership and consistent back 4 2 games in a row finally

Pre Lockdown - defence like a sieve and an absolute shambles

Now - 2 solid defensive performances, a comfortable win and a very good draw against an inform Utd

Seems obvious we’ve been working more on defence. He’s just said the following though so maybe more will come up the other end.

"We managed to be really solid today so I'm also happy with that.

Defence is looking better these days, look much more organised.

Time on the training ground will have helped, have to say though that, whatever their service records for us, noticeable the difference having removed what were two absolute fossils from the defence.

Much has been said about Jan's total drop off and how his legs went, but Toby had prior to lockdown become horribly tentative and way less mobile himself.

Sanchez and Dier I think we'd all admit aren't the perfect centre backs. But at least they're not shitting their pants abut whether they can cope at this level. Just got to give them these games as a partnership and assess where we are in the off season.

Mourinho has definitely done the right thing here though thus far, so kudos to him for that, and I hope he continues with them in the next few weeks. They're the two of the four who have any real future with us.

Don't think we really got a grip of the game til Dele went off and we switched to more of a 433. I think Jose will persist with Dele though and leave our CM2 struggling to hold their own.

I think it adds weight to the rumours that he wants a new centre back too.

I never wanted him out. I want him to change the turgid football.

The ironic thing is those that keep harping on about those who don't like his football are the very same people that they're describing... So funny.

We can be critical

I said after the Utd game that we were potentially seeing the first fruits of him spending time on the training pitch with the team, but that 1 game wasn’t enough of a barometer and that this game would give us a better idea.

Well WH weren’t all that today, but after we scored they tried to have a go but, in the main, we shut them down pretty convincingly, apart from 1 or 2 half chances really.

Again, 2 matches is still insufficient evidence to make any strong claims but, as many have noticed here, we do look far more organised as a defensive unit, not just the defence.

JM now has 9 days to prepare for Sheffield Utd, which will give us an even better idea of just how he’s organising the team, and I’m confident we will see more of the same there too. What I’m hoping to see is a little more work done with our forward play, particularly movement off the ball. We were pretty static up front in the early stages, but started to find gaps once WH started to tire. I don’t expect to see that against SU, so those 9 days of preparation should, hopefully, be used to work on improving our movement and interchanging up front to create more openings in a far more accomplished defensive unit, whilst he maintains the good work he’s doing on the training pitch with our defensive cohesion.

But so far so good atm. It was always going to be about steady progression rather than everything instantly clicking.

Let’s not forget also that winning breeds confidence, and confidence leads to improved performances.

You can also be patient how about that?

Defensively solid, kept the ball well in the midfield, just lacked a final ball at times. Once we went up, we broke quickly and directly. Apart from the scuffed clearance from the corner, they didn't have a sniff.

I totally agree with patience... That's why I don't want him out but Progression is important with that..

Let's not kid ourselves however... I would think that even levy is disappointed. He isn't paying someone 15m a year one if the highest in the world for patience.

Well we were a bit of a mess when Poch left so not really sure what you're expecting, things were always gonna take time.

People are just going OTT because it's Jose and he has a narrative of being a coach who's teams don't hog possession and play on the front foot.

Truth is that people aren't willing to admit is that performance tonight was pretty much a Poch performance bar the possession play, start slow wear teams down and grow into the game.

You can see that the mini preseason Jose has had is starting to make a difference. Players look far more comfortable in their roles. The CB pairing has been very good, we have actually broken play up in midfield. It’s just not gelled in an attacking sense yet.

As I’ve said in the latest match thread. I think playing a 4-2-3-1 with a fullback coming right forward to overload congests the attack a bit too much and kind of take away the space for a 10 as everyone is shifted over a little.

I think this would work much better as a 4-3-3 with an additional playmaker/late runner coming from midfield. As their starting position should be further back.

I can absolutely see why we are persisting with the lopsided formation though. I don’t think we are doing it just because Aurier can’t defend and is a bit of a clown. I think it’s actually a longer term vision formation as I think it’s how Jose envisions getting Sessgnon nnd Tanganga into the side, albeit in a mirror image to the current formation.

Dier has been great at CB, he is a leader (probably the only one we actually have, as Kane is a talisman not a leader). Having someone barking orders is helping Sanchez.

Hopefully there are all positive signs for next year

The mark of a good manager is when they identify something the rest of us don't see and make it work.
And that is summed up by that back five.
Not one of them had any form coming into the Covid break so when I saw them together I was more than a little worried.
But those last couple of games we've looked more solid at the back than we have for a couple of seasons.
Still early days but Jose seems to have identified the right combination for his style of play.

The preferred front three of Son, Kane, and Steve is a no-brainer and the inclusion of Lo Celso and Sissoko in the middle is also a must in our strongest eleven.
Just leaves that third CM role to fix and we're back to a CL place challenging side.

That's a big improvement over the 14th place car crash he took over.
