I'm surprised his apology to Dier was so long and detailed . Its a nice gesture , but I hope we aren't seeing the start of a serious favouritism for a player who most posters seem to think was playing extremely badly and is slow now . Jose did this in different interviews too .
Hopefully he won't feel the need to do this for every early substitution .

I also note that he said in interview that he had hoped the defence would operate a higher press , but they didn't . This must've been Poch's nightmare scenario . His one major, successful innovation and source of his success flopping in front of him , the players simply not doing ..or unable to do his bidding . So Jose has seen this prob too now , hope he can find a solution .

If there was favouritism he wouldn't have hooked him off.

It's just man management.

It has echoes of how he 'bigged up' Fellaini at MU. I'm not at all confident Dier can get back to his best and he's obviously way off it at the moment.

I can’t fault José’s start; his incisive substitution was a testament of his abilities, and there is no denying the performances (particularly regarding the attacking movement) have been much improved. However, he has a real task to improve us defensively - perhaps Jan in at LB may be part of the answer with Davies injured. He even managed to get a tune out of Eriksen last night! Would like to see the involvement of our three new boys increased; fingers crossed he starts to utilise them a little more on the weeks ahead.

He's been great so far in all respects, but I'm reserving judgement for when we hit an inevitable sticky patch and things aren't going his way. But so far, he is doing a brilliant job of getting into both the players and fans heads and saying exactly the sort of things that are needed. If he wasn't in football I reckon he'd be a psychologist.

If he can carry on in the current manner then there is a strong chance we will be competing for the title over the next couple of seasons.

Intuitively I doubt that when Mourinho says "higher press", he means the same as Pochettino's "high press". You don't need a high press. That was five years ago. You need correct pressing, which at times might be higher than what we have seen. Pochettino's high press is to disturb to get time enough to get organised. A smarter way to press is to press so you don't have to spend time doing all that reorganising.

Pochettino's high pressing frequently sees you winning back the ball yes (or kicking it away high up), but at a time when the opponent still have many defenders close by or close enough to get organised. Pressing should catch the opponent off guard at a time when they are not organised.

Surprised we didn’t see token bookings for players on a yellow card last night after the game was won considering the game in Munich is now a non event. That’s a typical Jose ploy.

I have no doubt he was unhappy with the performance and how easy they got past Dier. I don't think he necessarily blame Dier either, could and should blame himself as well for setting up that way.

But he's now put it out there and stated that it's a new Jose and it's about the team. He's going to prevent people blaming him for hanging players out to dry if he can prevent it. The problem is the lack of alternatives in that position.

Because they have punished such behaviour retrospectively before?

That’s because those players made it blatantly obvious what they were doing. Didn’t Ramos shake the refs hand or something equally as dumb? Think our players could have been a bit wiser than that.

I used to think that even though Mourinho could be funny sometimes, he was mostly a grumpy, cocky, arrogant and uncharming guy. But, he seems like a new man now..? Maybe he needed some rest? Now he seems respectful, happy, charming, funny and actually very nice. A manager that represents our club in a good way. So far at least.. ? And his brilliant tactical skills are still the same. I was impressed yesterday. I really like our new manager!

He's still got his work cut out for him. Despite the wins, we've still conceded 4 goals in 2 games. There's no way anyone would be happy with that.

Honeymoon is over, time to start getting that defence in order.

We're so much more lethal on the counter than we were under Poch in the last two years, it almost looks like when we used to have those quick counters in 16/17. I missed that
