I feel bad for Sanchez, at least he stepped up.
He might have been the right man to take it. Maybe he has done well in training when it comes to pens or in general in his career?
I like that he's having the balls to step up and take responsibility – credit where credit's due, but it's quite hard to believe that there weren't a more competent choice than him – he's a defender after all

Its not just the fact he played a completely weakened XI, some of these players are probably leaving in a few days. Doesn't make any sense.

To all of you saying it doesn’t matter and it’s not a big cup. I bet you weren’t saying that in 2008! I certainly wasn’t! I got absolutely smashed and had a great day! Meant loads.

Everyone says that about the LC when they go out and it's nonsense every time. Never once had much time for that view.

A defender who can’t defend

There is absolutely no way Ange picked Sanchez to take a pen, I’d bet a lot of money certain “experienced” players said they didn’t fancy it and it was left to Sanchez to step up. Hojbjerg should be embarrassed. I don’t blame Sanchez for that miss one bit, he had the balls to take one when it was clear others didn’t.
This ^^

I'm pretty sure most teams let players come forward and decide if they want to take a pen.

Shootouts are mostly won on nerve and confidence.

Sanchez had the balls to step up and take one whereas others seemingly didn't.

Rather than give Sanchez stick, i'd be a bit more concerned that penalty specialist Forster dived right 3 or 4 times and let penalties be passed into the new on his left.

That felt like an audition for all our dead wood that we are happy to move on ( bar a handful).
An audition they failed, so not good for our chances of moving said players on in 48hrs.
At what cost ? 1 of only 2 chances of silverware.
I thought with no European football we would go all out for the cups to get the monkey off our backs.
Wrong again.

Disappointed with the team selection given it's a realistic trophy to go for.

My main point however is the continuing dumbing down of sports in general. It wasn't long ago that this tie would have gone to a replay. Now extra time has also been removed - why?

This has parallels in other sports such as Tennis grand slam matches going to a tie break in the final set, cricket going for ever shorter formats or LIV golf being played over only 3 rounds?

The result tonight may well have been the same if extra time had been played, but it would have given the better side whoever that was to have a fairer opportunity to progress. It all just seems too quick fire

Its 10 years + ....every time, a Tottenham manager claim pregame, they will take the cup seriously.
And for 10 years, their line up will say the exact opposite.

With no Europe, we had no business to put out a B team.

I am fuming that yet again a Spurs manager thinks he knows better.

I hope Ange truly regrets this - but I am just pessimistic that we no manager we get for another 10 years will learn this.
Absolutely 100% - why would a new manager in first cup game.make so many changes.

I'm not sure Royal was that terrible. Worst players for me were Skipp, GLC, Perisic and Solomon.
I thought Skipp looked confused about what he’s meant to do, Perisic was shit apart from his assist and Solomon was invisible.

The real worry was GLC, we needed a player to always show for the ball in midfield and he just wasn’t it tonight. Maybe he needs to play with better players but he did him selves no favours tonight.

My takeaway is we lost on penalties to a good PL team that just got a draw at the Emirates. It happens.
Fair enough guess there’s nothing to discuss about the team selection or the performance then. Let’s close the thread down. It happens.

You care so much but describe the competition we went out of as “lousy”?

Interesting
Oh FFS - 2 league cups in 34 years for a club that when I was a a kid used to win things regularly is what is lousy. I thought that much was obvious but perhaps not in your case.

If you’re happy winning fuck all for years, then fine. All power to you.

Guessed this would happen after a first loss.

Ange out is it now?

Quite worrying how some of you lot can go from 100 to 0 so quickly.

Ange barely had any pre season games to really test out the squad, yes, the SQUAD. He needed to use this game to test out more squad players.

Was it a huge gamble? Yes, but we cannot play the first 11 - 12 players for the whole season.

It's a gamble that didn't pay off, get over it, we move on.

And for the record, i'm quite proud of Sanchez for putting his name forward and stepping up to take a pen. Atleast he had the bollocks to do it, especially after all the shit he's had to take from some of you lot.
Make that fucking gamble in the league then, and not when we're at risk of getting knocked out of one of two trophies we can actually win!

How does losing a very winnable game against an average team, on penalties, with key players dropped, "temper unrealistic expectations"? Is expecting to win this game in some way unrealistic? Is expecting progress in the easiest cup competition to win beyond the first round we play in unrealistic? Not for me.

I'd say if we'd played against an actually good side and been outplayed then I'd agree. My expectations game to game haven't changed because of this, it's just a shitty and incredibly avoidable result
Yes, it's a shitty result but I'm not talking about this one game, I'm more referencing the hype that's been building over the past few games. We've all been swept up by the hype and this may well be the cold shower of reality we needed.
We've got a long way to go on this journey yet.

Ange got it all wrong today unfortunately. Kills the vibe around the club at the moment and any good willing and patience. We could be looking to a 40-game season if we get a hard draw in our first FA Cup tie, knowing we have no depth. CL qualification is now the bare minimum this season, there’s just no excuses. Sad that Ange put this pressure on him after tonight.
