I don't really think of West Ham fans as ****s. Your typical Spammer is more of a 'bit of a wanker' type.

If other clubs were family members:

Chelsea = racist, violent, ignorant Uncle that the whole family despises.

Arsenal = Arrogant yet bitter estranged brother. You can take the piss out of each other, but it usually turns ugly.

Liverpool = Drunk Granddad banging on about the good old days.

West Ham = A distant relative's mangy pet cat that sleeps in its own shit and hisses at you during occasional family reunions.

I think I speak for everyone when I say we all want to be round yours at Christmas.

No we don't. We really don't. I never understood this. They wouldn't even make my top 5 most hated teams list. Is this some London thing I'm missing as an American fan here? When I think of West Ham it's not with hatred it's usually just to point and laugh.

Traditionally, after Arsenal, I reckon Chelsea and West Ham are our next biggest rivals.

I fucking hate them. They have some of the most irritating fans of any PL club IMO.

I think the rivalry has got less and less strong over the years because they've become more and more of a joke while we've showed steady progression. If we were both on a similar level the rivalry would definitely still be there

Ajax = your sexy like-minded colleague who resides in Europe but who still agrees to hook up in an awesome friends-with-benefits arrangement on the semi-regular.

@Spurger King - sorry, too soon? :playful:

They are irrelevant as a football club, but the fanbase I utterly despise. They've created this "rivalry" from nowhere and that leads me to absolutely hate losing to them as I can't stand the thought of their muggy fans mouthing off about it for months even when we're challenging for titles while they fight relegation / mid table mediocrity. Small club mentality. Fully expect them to turn up for the showpiece event of their season once again.

Succinctly put. Forever hanging on the coattails.

Cringey...

Yep, I also enjoyed our 2 Cup Final back-to-back wins over them in the past 2 season's.

Deep down they must be sick of losing all these Cup Finals against us they don't show up for. I now make that;

2006 Champions League ending Cup
2016 Premier League Title ending Cup
2017 Premier League Title ending Cup (2 time winners)

Ouch!

I wonder if we can also add the 2018 League Cup ending trophy as well?

I think the short answer is that they're utter ****s.

:pompous:
There is also a bit of history about it. It mostly comes from Chelsea's side. Even today we are there biggest rivals (only for a brief time in the 90s/00s when we couldn't beat them were Arsenal taken up as their biggest rivals). I think the rivalry has increased on our side as Chelsea became a better team. I mean there have never been any real animosity for ex-tottenham players moving Chelsea, Graham Roberts, Glenn Hoddle, Micky Hazard and Danny Blanchflower (as manager). I don't think it was ever seen as anything remotely close to a betrayal, and I'm sure neither Blanchflower or Hoddle for a single moment thought hmm... what would spurs fans think about this.

Originally Chelsea had bit of a thing against us because we always took there best players, such as Bobby Smith, Jimmy Greaves (well via milan), Terry Venables. Then came the 1967 cup final, the first ever final played between two London clubs, a game we won with both Venables and Greaves two ex-Chelsea players. The final is generally considered to be when the rivalry properly took hold.

In 1975 the rival took on a greater significance as we relegated them 2-0 with both teams scrapping for survival we stayed up with a single point. Ultimately, Chelsea have for a long time never liked us that much, and when Poyet moved to Tottenham it was treated like a Judas moment. A lot of this stems from the fact for most of our clubs histories we have been much more successful than Chelsea. Before Chelsea's success the late nineties there most successful periods were in the 60s (and 1 year in the 50s) it just so happened that we were better than them in both those periods and outperformed them decade by decade.

Before the 90s Chelsea were behind us, and I guess a lot of hate came from us being a successful London club who were not so far ahead of them that they couldn't keep with us but enough ahead of them for them to aspire to throw us down a peg or two. I dunno.

I'd not call them big rivals, but I wouldn't dismiss them as rivals either (other than to their faces to wind them up).

Growing up during the Alan Sugar era, they actually finished above us a few times and beat us two, home and away, in the years were football was becoming more relevant in my daily school life (arguing with other kids, being mocked for insisting Ginola was better than spires which I still maintain). This was basically when Harry Redknapp was their manager, it was all downhill after they sacked him.

However, the real hated teams for me are always Arsenal of course, then Chelsea because of their **** fans and how they docked on us constantly for 15 odd years, then United because of how the dicked on us constantly for the same time frame, the way the took our players and the media bias towards them in the Fergie era.

After those I'd say Liverpool and West Ham come into it, both mainly because of their moronic fans. Then after that I hate pretty much everyone else equally in this league barring maybe Bournemouth and Brighton.

Every west ham fan i know is a season ticket holder. I have a begrudging respect for them, as they're very committed, and they're a good laugh away from specifically Spurs/West Ham subjects but it all goes to pot when it turns to that

I've had to burn a couple of them big time due to their mouthing off and they don't take it well at all. I find they actually get quite small time about it if you really go for it - almost treat you like a bully, as if OBVIOUSLY Spurs are bigger and more successful, no need to point it out, it's all just bantz etc

Never in a group tho, obvs

It's a West Ham thing.

Obviously Arsenal and Chelsea are our big rivals, and more recently you could maybe add Liverpool. Outside of that I can't really think of teams our fans have a genuine hatred of. You'd be looking abroad at Feyenoord, or possibly the lower leagues at Leeds, and even that's a stretch.

London derbies tend to have that added spice because of territorial pride, but it's not usually a matter of animosity from us. Fulham, Palace, West Ham, Millwall, QPR are all just standard London derbies (Millwall is a bit different, but it's the same for virtually everyone that plays them).

West Ham's rivals are Millwall, but because the two rarely play each other these days the thick Spammer fans have invented a 'rivalry' with us that is entirely one-sided.

All they've managed to do is to draw our attention to them, which is a blessing really, considering how endlessly amusing that irrelevant little club is.

Not for me. West Ham annoy me more than Arsenal and Chelsea. Can't fucking stand them and their fans.

Fair enough. Personally my attitude towards Arsenal has softened due to having a lot of gooner friends that are very level-headed, and who openly admire the progress we have made.

West hams hate goes back longer than that I'm nearly fifty and it's been like it all my life, they resent us but don't know why.
