I think way too much misinformation is passed on about "The Committee". Most of the ITKs have agendas, at least subtle ones (not necessarily their own, but passed on from their source), or they aren't as close to the action as they think. AVB was always hired to work in some kind of system whereby he wouldn't have full control over signings. Now obviously no manager is going to have full control, but a head coach clearly has less, much less. AVB has always said that he doesn't want the distraction of the transfer stuff, and wants to concentrate on the players, the coaching, and the tactics.

Just because the player was bought by "The Committee" (if we're going to call it that), it doesn't in anyway mean that AVB didn't want the player. That's poor logic. If there is such a thing as "The Committee" it would also be pretty naive to think that AVB was not on it or informing it in some way.

I'm sure you're correct that transfers are decided on by committee, I just feel that AVB may be perfectly fine with that.

I think the view of Levy and the money men will be that we've spent so big this summer to improve all areas of the squad that all that should be required in near-future windows (providing we hold on to our key players) are incremental improvements. We'll no doubt make a bit of money in player sales (Adebayor? Assou-Ekotto? Lennon? Defoe?) and I'll expect us to spend a little more on top of that. I'd hope that if there are good deals to be had then we won't hesitate to spend a bit more money than we set out to. We were about to spend £20m more than we ended up spending on Willian, so if there are players we're keen to sign I'd expect us to spend.

Agree with the first bit in bold, for sure, I think that's the fundamental difference between manager and coach.

Second bit not for me, I think if we'd have signed Willian, then that would have meant no Lamela and/or Eriksen. Judging on last night's performance we got the right end of that deal.

Not really sure who that was aimed at, but my point being if he wasn't even appointed as head coach at the time of Vertonghen/Sigurdsson and our first interest in Lloris, I'm pretty confident he would have had absolutely no say in the transfers.

You wrote the same shit about Ramos, which wasn't happening either, so I'll wait a while before I'm totally convinced.

I didn't write the same shit about Ramos. I wrote slightly different shit about Ramos. I understood the logic of hiring Ramos, I knew how he coached Sevilla to play and I liked some of the things he tried to get us doing. I think he had a difficult set of circumstances and still managed to win a trophy and play some decent football on the way at times. I didn't think a year was long enough but accept why he was removed.

This is different. This isn't me saying I quite like what AVB is doing but time will tell. This is me not hedging, or pirouetting on the fence, this is me putting by bollocks on the line and saying I think AVB is the best coach we have had since I've been supporting spurs. And I've seen a few.

We would've brought in Lamela, negotiations were in advanced stages when we were on the verge of signing Willian.

Eriksen we would've missed out on (hence why I said £20m and not £30m)

Good points.

Now, where do we stand in terms of other spurs sides from peoples perspectives?

The side with bale, modric and vdv may have been more talented but not as balanced imo.

This current side could definitely be most balanced and talented for a long time.

As we stand that question cannot be answered.

Success is built on trophies, and we are 4 games into a 38 game season.

It is going to be a lot harder now to be a successful team than it was 20 years ago, probably even harder than it was 3 years ago and although it is impossible to say how we stand against previous teams, we are definitely in good shape, and the future does look very bright!!

Feel free to join me back up AVBs arse, where SB has accused me of being... i'm sold on the guy, it was a great appointment.

Fuck me. Well I hope your bollocks don't suffer off the back of this outrageous accusation.

I have to accept it though, with your training ground knowledge of what went on under the previous regime, and to what goes on now, it's difficult to argue with.

At least you say it sincerely, I hope for your bollocks, and the rest of our sakes that you are of course you are right. I'm saying it's far too early to tell, and I'm sticking with it.

I don't think I said you were up AVB's arse, I said you had your head in your own arses, much more impressive in my book. Only seen it once in Cirque du Soleil at the Royal Albert Hall.

That's all very presumptuous I'm afraid mate. As is this all, we'll obviously never know.

Because of this I'm obviously right and you're not.

Beecie just one more thing, as much as I admire your bollocks.

On the line.

If this does go tits up (let's hope it doesn't) can you just admit it rather than go through all the jackanory stuff like you did with Ramos? If you had come out and said, "Guys I hold my hands up, Ramos was a fucking ****." it would have been a lot more friendly and sexual between us.

I'll happily do the same and say I didn't give him enough credit when I should have done.

And we'll all live happily ever after and bask in the limelight of Brian McDermott being our next head chef/manager.

Sticky bollocks if you will...

This summer has been arguably our biggest revision in terms of the squad and the clubs ambition since Arnesen came in all those years ago. That saw the start of our long climb back to the top. There is an element of gambling with this summer. We have lost or sold all of the cutting edge players who got us where we are right now (Carrick, Berbatov, Modric, VDV, King, Bale) yet we have replaced them with proven players at their levels, either with solid reputations (Paulinho, Soldado) or with exciting promise (Eriksen, Lamela) and some good squad players who improve on last year (Capoue, Chichires, Chadli, Fryers). We also play what seems to be a less free flowing and exciting style as we did with Harry, but a more efficient and bustly game, with quick pressing and maximum ball retention.

So yes, as fans we're in a kind of wait and see sort of state. One thing I will say for AVB is last season proved to me that when he sees mistakes or problems, he's not afraid to make changes, such as going from selling Dawson to QPR to making him captain, seeing Bales threat and moving him inside as a forward

How much of a **** was he when he was giving Arsenal a good hiding and then outplaying another bitter rival and the most expensive team in europe to win our first trophy for a good few years in front of the onlooking world ?

Football and opinions do not have to be black and white bear and mine of Ramos weren't. There are plenty of shades between **** and demi god. I didn't think Ramos was either.

Like I said, my block and tackle is on the line with AVB, I don't think he gets everything right, I don't think he is a tactical genius, he is very much a novice in many respects, but I think as a coach he is the real deal. It's not just about the tactical or technical stuff he is teaching, he seems to have that thing that the best coach's have, the ability to impart belief in players.

Boring.

Boring.

Beecie.

You should write a book though with the bit in bold, there will some gullible fools that believe you.

AVB himself said that at the end of last season, he met with lewis and levy to decide what players they would go for in the summer.
The committee thing is hyped way too much. Every club has one.
What is the point of a scout if he has no say in how good a player is?
What is the point of a financial advisor if he has no say in what we can afford?
What is the point of a chairman if he doesn't make the final decision?
What is the point of a head coach who doesn't identify positions that need strengthening?

They work together. Yes they may disagree on which player is the best value for money or is achievable. But they have done well. There are not many teams who have spent £0 over the last 4 years and not only kept pace with the larger teams in the league but arguably have gained on them.

:p

I'm pretty convinced Lamela was very far down the line when Willian was having his medical. Was being leaked to the press at that stage and was certainly very high on Baldini's wish list!

Either way, I'm very happy that we ended up with Lamela and Eriksen rather than Lamela and Willian, especially if that allows us to bring in another winger next year if we need one.
