I also know a guy who pretends he's gay too, well he might well be bysexual but every time I meet him (he's a friend of a friend) he's that bit more camp. Last time I saw him he had a big handlebar moustache and looked like that bloke out of Hollyoaks. He's a bit of a cock in my view, and I don't like fake cocks very much ;)

More people are an embarrassment to the straight community.
Well in terms of ratio that doesn't really mean a whole lot, although i'd bet there are more decent gay people ratio wise than straight people as they're probably more open-minded.

Interestingly, about a year ago, I was listening to the radio and it had this story about a top top German footballer doing an anonymous interview where he stated that he was gay and that all his team mates knew. His identity remains a secret.

If I was to engage my non existent gaydar and hazard a wild guess, it would be Mario Gotze, who has always seemed a little camp to me :). Just wild and stupid speculation on my part, but of course the story on the radio couldn't help me start guessing.

It just seems a shame that this is even still an issue in this day and age. One of the players in my hockey team is gay ( although he doesn't particularly broadcast it to all and sundry ), and its not even an issue that ever gets talked about.

Can't speak for Germany but in Holland homosexiality has been accepted for hundreds of years. Perhaps the Germans are more open-minded? You'd think so after the guilt of their modern history.

Thats a very fair point actually, the Germans are a lot more open minded and blasse about things like sex and nudity. It seems logical that they would also be less narrow minded about gay footballers. Still, not enough so that the footballer wanted to go public at this point.

Is it me or could you quite easily picture kaboom in a dress. He has that look about him. Personally I couldn't give a fuck if he took to the pitch in 9inch stilettos, he's still a beast.

No offence to him, but I don't really think this is significant as it relates to football, as he retired.

If a footballer publicly came out and continued playing, that would be a watershed moment.

Appearance? Sorry didn't know you knew how I formed my opinions... Quite the talent you have there (being psychic) It was more a question to probe and gauge as to why certain footballers haven't come out. A la someone like Dean Ashton who isn't in football any more would have less incentive to keep his sexuality secret. (Not saying what I've heard is 100% correct)

You sound like you're the one stuck in the stone ages with the 'sound and look' different allegation; I have gay relatives so I have no qualms with them.
So how else do you form opinions about someone who you've never met and know nothing about beyond rumour ?

Well, not until now for Christ's sakes.

Good luck to him and I hope it makes his life easier from here on in. I hope also that his coming out encourages other gay footballers to also come out. Shame on anyone who criticises or ridicules him.

Not sure how coming out and retiring really helps the cause.

It will take a very strong character to come out as gay and play in a major league. It's necessary to combat homophobia in sport but not sure if a player will want to come out while still playing.

I believe that Arne Friedrich's sexuality was always supposed to be one of the worst kept secrets in German football! Maybe it was him?

I think it's a shame that Rogers felt that he had to retire, although sadly I can understand why he wouldn't want all that focus and pressure on him. I wonder if the past couple of days have felt like a massive weight off his shoulders, finally letting go of that secret?
