You sound like you're the one stuck in the stone ages with the 'sound and look' different allegation; I have gay relatives so I have no qualms with them.
You may not have an issue with homosexuality, but having gay relatives has zero bearing on that. Ask John Fashnu.

Thanks for the dislike for my infantile post in this thread. See, I can admit that my little joke may not have been the most mature thing ever written, but that's all it was a childish little joke. Lighten up.
The infantile bit's not the problem. It's the way 'jokes' like that normalise homophobia that's the issue.

That case is subjective; of course me having gay immediate relatives is a sign of my tolerance to homosexuality. (Given that I've accepted it with no problem whatsoever) That's ridiculous to say it isn't.

You said:

Your "acceptance" of them is a sign of your tolerance. The fact that you have gay relatives isn't.

It's good that he's come out, but it's still a shame that being a gay footballer is seen as spectacular enough to make the news.

Obviously we would all like to live in a ideal world. One where gays don't feel the need hide their sexuality but surely that same ideal world would include them being accepted as equals (rightly so) and therefore subjected to the same kind of banter. There's lots of funny/banter songs about terry and giggs which I find funny but they would have to be banned because gays would be protected from any kind of song that in any way mentioned there sexuality. Which I think is sad as gays have the right to be taken the piss out of than anyone else.

You're imagining that the context is equal. It isn't. In reality, gay people are beaten up and killed for their sexuality. When the world is truly equal, then the banter can be equal too. But until then, we have a responsibility to recognise the real damage that it can do by playing into true homophobia.

That's kinda why I referred to it as an "ideal world" obviously most rational people realise we don't live in one. I agree totally with what you say tho

Rogers tweeted last night to say he was surprised by the positive reaction, which is kind of sad in itself. I hope he hasn't retired from the game because he's worried about the potential reaction from fans and, more importantly, colleagues.

I agree. You'd hope in this day and age it wouldn't have led to any stupid reactions from fans (or indeed other players) but it only takes one idiot to say or do something which could lead to further abuse. Shame he decided to retire but good luck to him.

Not homophobic in any way, but why do some gay people suddenly camp it up as soon as they're out of the coset? Doesn't really bother me that much, just think it's a bit fake and put on.

It's possible that's the real person emerging and they've been suppressing their true personality until then.

They don't really. It's just that it's the camp gay men that are the most visible in the media and so there's that preconception that that's just how gay men are. That in turn reinforces stereotypes and behaviours.

Same reason some straight blokes feel compelled to put on a fake macho persona.

We live in the stone ages. Regardless of the more educated of us who won't abuse a gay footballer; the majority of delinquents in the crowd will.

Slightly off topic; who do we reckon IS actually gay in the English football leagues? I've heard rife speculation about Dean Ashton but not sure.
If Dan Ashton's wife is anything to go by, definitely not!

Well I only said it because I know somebody who did such a thing and now he's as camp as xmas. It is a common misconception and I know of gay men who are very much the opposite of camp, also the campest person I know is straight.

So are we talking insecurities here then? I think they do it because it makes them seem more of a fun character, and it's an act that makes them feel more desirable as a friend or whatever. Anybody who tries to act tough does so through lack of self-esteem, they've literally got nothing else going for them so being an 'ardman empowers them and gives them a sense of confidence. It's weakness that's what it is and I think it is the same thing actually now you mention it.

Alot of them are an embarassment to the gay community. People have made careers on being gay and having bad teeth...

Good on him.
