I think we got lucky that wolves weren't better in the final 3rd, there was a lot of last ditch defending, when players are throwing themselves in front of the ball it can go anywhere and we were lucky the ball bounced our way.
Wolves were lucky we didn't play as well as we can. :sneaky:

Tell that to atletico from the mid 10s. Nothing wrong with last minute defending. Pressing up further the pitch is better at preventing chances but also frees up space further up the pitch allowing the possibility of conceding pretty dangerous chances.

Ultimately, good defending is when you limit the amount of good chances the opposition had. Wolves ended the game with an 0.72 exG compared to our 0.99 exG. We did this in spite of Wolves having most of the ball. We both had 5 shots on target and while they had more attacks they rarely threatened us. We weren't under intense pressure. We were in control, just in a way we are not used to. This was a typical Jose performance, and we will have to get used to it. The first one.

Fair point on Athletico and the exG. To your point, it would be interesting to see a comparison of exG between teams that cover well and further up the pitch vs teams that defend well closer to the goal. I guess picking the teams would be a bit subjective, but it would be fascinating to see a comparative analysis between the two strategies.

Wolves forum:

Sat on a train north out of London, with loads of Spurs fans. They are all dreadfully civilised, not a train beer in sight.

spurs have a combination of so many unpleasant players, except for son really hard to like anyone on that team

That front four then is pretty frightening, but we can get at their midfield and full backs for sure.

Thrashed hit and hope. Top corner. Typical.

We are playing some brilliant stuff going forward.

Deli alli diving at every opportunity, horrible player.

for a supposedly crap keeper gazzaninga has made a few great saves

Playing them off the park.
Will be gutted if we don’t get an equaliser before half time.

WHAT. A. HIT! Adama Traore!!

LMAO what a tackle by Kane there

oh ffs come on

Cripes <-- this one is definitely my favourite :ROFLMAO:

Fucking hell. Can't believe we've lost that.

Didn't deserve to lose to those stains. Ref was a shitehawk as were most of their diving **** players. I'd happily see Eric Dier have a career ending lobotomy, trouble is I don't think they'd find anything to lobotomise...

spurs should have had a minimum of two red cards, the treatment of Adama was diabolical

What a fantastic game and performance though. Nuno is going to kill them for conceding such a daft goal though.

Wolves XG 0.72, Tottenham 0.99.

Now will people stop talking bollocks about us being outplayed because they had a lot of possession and huffed and puffed a bit.

What a game. Wolves were fantastic to be fair, and their fans are immense.

No team is going to come to Wolves, control the game and win pretty. We defended epically at times, Mourinho's defensive process is starting to take shape, and I think it's exciting.

I was also pleased with Dier who is getting a lot of stick. He has suffered some signifcant health issues over the last year and at this level of sport that is really going to take its toll. He is still a long way from being fully fit and sharp but we forget that he wasn't playing at all until a few weeks ago.

Even at his best he never made this role look attractive, but he was quietly effective at it and is starting to be again. He is an intelligent player who reads the game well and his physical presence and aerial ability is important. He is also mentally a strong personality who can command respect and organise the team. That is why Mourinho is sticking with him because his teams are always built around these strong characters.

Traore is a beast and Jan managed to keep him in check, just about. Sessegnon or Rose would have been massacred. It was certainly a torrid afternoon for Vertonghen and I'm so pleased he got the winner.

I know it is early days, but I think we have a manager who really knows his shit. I also loved his post match analysis of United and how they are much more suited to taking points off top teams but struggle against lesser opposition, since then they went on to beat city but draw against Everton.

Five games in and we have gained 9 points on Chelsea. I'm starting to believe.

That's still part of the problem, though. Wolves we're carving us open as a team, every one of them knowing what they were supposed to be doing, on and off the ball. That's down to the coaching team, we never had that under Poch, and we still don't have it under Jose, (although it's early days and there are good signs). We can't rely on great individual goals to rescue us every time.
You're preaching the the choir!

TBF, I think this is the first game we've won under Mourinho because of good individual goals. Sure, we got some great ones last weekend, but we missed some easy chances too. I'm not worried about our attacking play. It's the defensive side I'm worried about.

The booing happened from the first time he touched the ball. Unless there is some previous there I’m unaware off, I really don’t get it
The only thing I can think of is the '72 UEFA Cup Final. Sounds mad but those sky-blue Manc brain surgeons hate us for the '81 FA Cup Final, so anything's possible...

EDIT: Completely off-topic, but the Scum are already a goal down! :ROFLMAO:

They didn't carve us open. They created eff all, and their only goal came from a fabulous individual effort.

For what its worth the second goal was thanks to team work. Verts header was only scored because Kane intentionally took two defenders with him creating more space for Jan to direct his header.

Also we definitely did have that under Poch in the past. In fact one of Pochs problems is he has incredibly stubborn idea of how the ball needs to be circulated and moved. I think Wolves have a very well drilled team, but it's a particular style. Drilling a team hard has possible negatives too, which I think did effect us. Players become drones and they stop finding creative solutions to issues that can emerge on the football pitch. There needs to be a balance. Players need to be able to play instinctively and overcoaching is a thing.

I think it depends on the teams you are playing. Teams which are very good on the ball can destroy any lapse in shape. Man city were experts at this. Wolves are one of the best technical teams in the league, so I think Jose did intentionally try and defend a little deeper today.

Exactly, Burnley had more possession than us last week, it's what you do with it that counts.

I thought we were outstanding. Defended fantastically well, had the best chances and got the win. Dier was very good but every single player put in a shift.
