RWB definitely looks a priority for a proper competitor with Emerson. Lavinier has looked good for our u23s but unsure if he's going to be quite the level, would rather we tried him over Doherty at this point. Lamptey would be ideal but just don't see him coming without it being a massive fee.

My top picks would be:

Youcef Atal - 25 - Nice - £15m - both footed, very skillfull and excellent with the ball.

vid comp:

Wilfried Singo - 20 - Torino - £10m - Strong ball carrier with good end product.

vid comp:

Nahitan Nandez - 25 - Cagliari - £20m - We were linked with him in the summer, very versatile who can play in midfield (central or right) but also played RWB. Technically excellent with amazing engine.

vid comp:

Nice post, Atal defo the more offensive rwb, fast, tricky good engine going up and down, hed be right a nuisance for opposition.

Nandez we were linked before when FB arrived, his versatility, desire, energy and engine coupled with skill feisty tackling nature hed be great for PEH competition. Seems a very conte-esque type of player, his versatility especially atm with our squad would be very handy too.

Incredible. They all look just like Aurier did, before we bought him…

In terms of homegrown players that could address some of our problem areas, I feel that we should be attempting to sign Harvey Barnes and Conor Gallagher.

Barnes - he's constantly improving, has a serious work rate and has an eye for a goal too. Leicester are on a bad run recently and I think he would be easily attainable, but most likely one for the summer.

Gallagher - he has been a breath of fresh air for Palace this season, mainly operating in higher positions but I think he would be a great addition for CM. Again, he has a serious work rate in him, not afraid of a tackle and has plenty of creativity about him. I know he is on loan from Chelsea and the likelihood of them doing business with us would mean it would never happen, but he is definitely a player we should be looking at, especially if we want to sign some HG players.

Then why waste any time or resources looking at him? Chelsea aren’t going to sell us a promising home grown youngster. They’d rather keep him on the books and loan him to lower half sides until the day he retires.

It‘s a complete non starter.

If we could get just one signing in January, but it would be a proven top class player, what would people want?

For me it would be a top class midfield dictator, someone to add the composure to Skipp’s energy. Someone who will master the middle third horizontally while Skipp deals with the ball vertically. A Scholes to Skipp’s Keane.

The beauty being that Hojbjerg could rotate with either player and the minutes would likely be spread quite evenly between the three.

Even at his age, we could do much worse than bring back Modric with his contact situation uncertain.

I don't think they're particularly obtainable. Barnes is in contract until 2024 playing for a good side with money behind them.

Gallagher plays for Chelsea.

If we went big for Barnes we could possibly get him but I don't think he's the player to go all out for.

As Conte recently said he wants two players for each position, and also stated that he see's Rodon as a CB and not a RCB or LCB, it made me think how he sees the overall squad, and where he will see gaps that need addressing. I have based the below on where Conte has used players to date, and how many minutes they have had. The only positions we do not have obvious back-up for are LCB and CF, and for this reason I think these will be the priorities in January. It also suggests that Ndombele and Dele are surplus, and there seems no obvious place for Tanganga.

GK: LLoris [Gollini]
RCB: Romero [Sanchez]
CB: Dier [Rodon]
LCB: Davies [TBD]
RWB: Emerson [Doherty]
LWB: Reguilon [Sessegnon]
CM: Skipp [Winks]
CM: Højbjerg [Lo Celso]
RWF: Moura [Gil]
LWF: Son [Bergwijn]
CF: Kane [TBD]

Assuming we fill the two obvious gaps in January, I'd imagine we'll then look at strengthening our three or four weakest positions in the summer - for me RWB, CB, CM and RWF stand out as those weaknesses.

Agree the approach here. I'd personally go with:

GK: LLoris [Gollini]
RCB: Romero [TBD]
CB: Dier [Rodon]
LCB: TBD [Davies]
RWB: Emerson [TBD]
LWB: Reguilon [Sessegnon]
CM: Skipp [TBD]
CM: Højbjerg [Lo Celso/TBD]
RWF: TBD [Moura]
LWF: Son [TBD]
CF: Kane / TBD [Kane / TBD]

Now I get that's potentially 9 players we need to sign, but given the dross we need to ship out (Doherty, Sanchez, Ndombele, Dele, Winks & Bergwijn), I don't think it's that drastic. Actually it's more like 8 players as we have Sarr joining then.

That being said, priority for Jan for me is: CF, RWF, CM and RWB, in that order. Ideally another CB in too, either RCB or LCB. Then in the summer we need to fill the other positions. If we can get 4 in Jan and another 4 in the summer then we're in a good place IMO.

I would keep Gil for now as he could turn into a key player if we can work out a spot for him in the team.

Atal is made of Papier-mâché and is horrendous defensively. He’s very good going forward but he’s been a shadow of his former self since his bad injury

In order of priority I see things like this.

CB - need one more decent on to go LCB. Davies has been good but he isn't a long term solution against top opposition.
RWB - unfortunately I think we won't address this after just buying Emerson but we are weak here compared to the LWB and this is one of Conte's key positions.
CF/RWF - need someone who excels at both so can either replace Kane or play with Kane and Son as our front 3 can't play every game.
CM - can't see this happening unless we sell Ndombele/Lo Celso/Both.

Bergwijn has been listed as Conte as potential back up for Kane (in the absence of a proper back up), but it is clear that he operates best as a LWF

We do need to look at HG players especially if we're looking at some of the most likely departures could be Dele, Winks, Rodon (loan or sell) Tanganga and even possibly Kane.

Really like Barnes as a player but he plays LW where we already have Son with Gil and Bergwijn too.

Gallagher I just don't see Chelsea doing that business with us.

HG outfield players I'd be interested in would include:

Konsa - CB - Villa
Killman - Left footed CB - Wolves
Oxford - DM - Augsburg
Carvalho - AM/RWF - Fulham

Agree with this.

Conte will be able to improve a lot of aspects, certainly defensively, and the shape of the team with and without the ball. And I see us as a team who won't be heavily reliant on possession and dominating games.

Our biggest weakness at the minute is a lack of goals. Kane isn't scoring and is dropping much deeper anyway, therefore we need more firepower. And of course, if Kane or Son get injured our chances of top 4 are over, as no player will be able to step up.

We would be very well organised, have a good game plan yet have no real threat in attack.

A CF would also allow us to switch between 3-4-3 and 3-4-1-2 giving Conte more options.

We do desperately need CMs but I think with Skipp and Hojbjerg, you have two solid players there that allow the others to attack more freely, adding another CF boosts that significantly.

I also believe Lo Celso will start to feature and Conte will get a tune out of him.

Therefore, if we have to wait for the CM Conte really wants, we should do.

It's been stated a few times, we don't NEED to look for HG players as we have 4 vacant spots for non HG currently.

That's not to say that we shouldn't consider improving the HG contingent from an eligibility viewpoint.

Agreed. Barnes could be a good replacement for Son long term, but short term that would make zero sense. Last thing we need is another left sided forward right now.

With that going to 3 once Gil turns 21 in February and if we are looking at Doherty, Alli, Winks, Tanganga, Rodon all potentially leaving then we will NEED to look at HG signings to replace at least a few of them unless we're just promoting from youth.
