Many fans and perhaps the club, Poch and Levy themselves seem to feel we've already skipped the part where you need to win the "lesser" trophies because we're now a glorious League winning, CL finalist level uber club. Consequently they don't give a feck about the domestic cups and are happy to pass up fairly easy chances at silverware.
Can't progress in the league cup - we're above that now!
Can't try and win the FA Cup - the players might get tired or games might clash with league and CL fixtures!
No, best to win nothing and compete for the two prizes that are by far the most difficult to win.
Can you blame many fans not caring about the cups when Poch doesn't seem to? Can you blame Poch not caring when so many fans dismiss the cups as an irrelevance?
I really wish we were the uber club some people think we are already but we're not. We need to win stuff. We need to win because we've won nothing for so long. We need to win because winning cups breeds a winning attitude and is what leads to winning leagues. We need to win cups because it's what all the best managers and clubs do when they start a sustained period of success. We need to win cups because our players will eventually leave if they never get any medals.
We need to win because if we don't win a trophy we lose our record of winning something for every one of the last six decades which only United can match. This is important.
To be honest it utterly blows my mind how dismissive so many people are of the cups - we've only won three that I remember in my lifetime, in 91, 99 and 2008. They are by far the greatest memories I have as a Spurs fan and no amount of second place finishes or one off good results will ever come close.
Still, who am I to place importance on winning things? I was told tonight by a fan that he wouldn't even celebrate winning the League Cup, that's how little he cared.
Like I said, blows my fucking mind, attitudes like that.
A post worthy of a trophy
