The VAR Thread

So you’d keep VAR as it is then?
Remember, my point throughout this has been that miking up the refs can improve VAR and improve player behaviour.
It can be win-win

But it does sound like some people - not necessarily you nailsy, would keep VAR in its current format ( with all its faults) because they perceive players incapable of change.

Coming at this from a parent too, my children are more likely to hear the swearing from me! (especially after watching incredulously after we get robbed by dodgy officiating again!)

As I said before I'd be happy to see the refs with a mic but just put a ten or thirty second delay on it so you can bleep out the swearing.

They also need to move the emphasis towards getting the right decision rather than protecting the on field ref.

Just watching MOTD and can’t believe that Sakho’s goal was disallowed. Clearly came off his back/shoulder.

The refs are abysmal.

Why not like in the NFL, where the referees switch the mike on to make an announcement to the crowd?

@mr ashley Troy Deeney just called the interviewer a "cheeky bastard" live on Sky ?
Ok. Thank you for thinking of me!
Without seeing it, I’m presuming that Troy didn’t immediately correct himself /apologise?
Which, if you pay attention to his interview style does sound out of character. His interview after the Pearson sacking, and his podcast with Louie Theroux (very good podcast series btw), shows him to be one of the more grounded and mature players.

But, this is the VAR thread, not the post-match interview thread. I’ve always focussed on players language in-game, which was my original point.

Im sure there was a video of a miked-up Graham Poll reffing a match (possibly Arsenal vUtd) back in the day, and he got dogs abuse from the players- what should have been a series of re for foul/abusive language (could’ve been David Elleray, not sure).
I’m pretty sure (awaiting to be proved wrong, naturally!) that there was a lot of questions raised about why the ref let it go on unpunished, and how that lead to a big step back from the concept of miking up refs in general.
Which, I think, is the wrong way to approach the glaring issues of transparency in refereeing, because it basically means no one can hear the refs justify their decisions because the players keep saying “f*** off ref” (for example).
I think if this element of player behaviour was unmasked, it would rightly cause a backlash by parents (just like yourself @nailsy - and me). The clubs and the FA would have to act, and consequently players would modify their language in the workplace (just like we all have to).
Im sure there would be a short period where embarrassed parents would have to explain how the language was rude and not for repeating, but if we’re being honest, if we take our kids to a game ever, that is exactly the sort of conversation we have to have.
Apologies for the long reply, and for dragging this discussion back up.
In summary, I want to hear the refs explain their decisions. I want to know if they are experts or cheats. I want football to be at least on a par with other sports and their technology/integrity. But I don’t think players language should be the barrier preventing this from happening

You're thinking of this, it was Elleray and the language is quite something.

I wasn't trying to prove a point, I just thought you'd be interested after we were chatting about it the other week.
And Deeney did apologize immediately and several times. He even said sorry to his nan as he knew she'd be watching :)

Haha oh well that will teach me to go into a long-winded ramble!

I like Deeney. Wouldn’t want to sign him though

Next season the referee must go to the tv screen and check by himself what happened.

Premier League is the only league in the world where the referee never checks the incident.

I'm sure I read something the other day which said we benefited the most from VAR decisions this season.

I read the same I think, it was a league table to show who has gained or lost the most points but it lacked a load a context.

So United set the record for most penalties awarded in a season for a PL club with 14 (them and Man City are the only clubs on double figures. City have 11). Now I have a look at how other leagues are doing and see Italy:

Lazio (18), Genoa (16), Lecce (15), Roma (14), Juventus (14), Sampdoria (12), Inter Milan (11), Atalanta (10), Fiorentina (10). 0.50 per game. 186 penalties awarded compared to 92 in the EPL...

Not suprising when utter nonsense like this gets regularly given.

I hate stuff like this. We were mostly done over this season by our own ineptitude. No point trying to dress it up!
Yes. But we’ve gotten some awful decisions by VAR. Is it subjective? Yeah. But we dropped points to Leicester, United & Sheffield United as a result. Which I guess the Leicester and Sheffield results just point to our teams absolute garbage mentality and instinct to throw it all away.
