Wasn't it Thursdays where every deal seemed to fall through for us. If nothing has been made official by Wednesday then I hope you brave souls are all ready for heart break lol.

I do believe that a different manager can have us playing better, but there needs to be a dose of reality about it at the same time. We will struggle to return to the heights of the Poch era of the club in the near future. I sensed it at the time, but those years were a perfect storm of a manager doing an incredible job, and a whole core of players - Lloris, Toby, Vertonghen, Eriksen, Dembele, Son et al - who were all purchased for relatively low fees within our means and matured and reached their peak at the exact same time. Add the rise of Kane to that. It will be almost impossible to repeat this, with how stiff the competition and money is at the top end of table. It was why it was so so gutting that Poch never managed a trophy and that he and Levy allowed two windows to pass without investing in players to keep the squad improving, whilst our reputation was at an all time high.

Honestly, I see very little possibility of us being inside the top 4 for the next foreseeable while. Particularly, if Man Utd realise that their position is only being held by the quality of the squad and that they are vastly underperforming with Solksjaer.

A gloomy outlook perhaps, but it feels like reality to me unless we absolutely knock the next managerial hire out of the park, and Paratici plays an absolute blinder with player purchases over the next 3 windows . and that a full stadium somehow vastly increases our budgets going forward. Even then it might not be enough.
I agree that team was special, but I think we need to stop thinking in terms of "repeating" this or recreating the identity of that team somehow. It was unique, a perfect storm as you say, but there are many ways to build a successful team and there is no reason we can't be successful with what we have now under the right manager or set of circumstances. I would even argue that the squad has better depth now, whereas the first XI was better in the Poch era.

For once, it feels like the club reacted at the right time. In three weeks Ole could be out the door and Conte wrapped up for United while we’re sniffing around the dustbins.

Of course, being us, the one time we get in first I don’t hold out much hope for anything but a complete disaster.

I don't think people appreciate what a top manager does to a squad. Look at Brighton under Potter. Look what Klopp did to LIverpool. Yes you need quality players, but Spurs certainly have enough to do more than we are.

No reason this squad can't go for top 4 under Conte this season and push on further next season with some smart hires in the right places.

Would Conte take an 18-month deal?
I think both Tuchel and Poch did the same with Chelsea and PSG respectively. Becoming more the norm at certain clubs and with certain managers; if he signs it will likely have an option to extend like Poch's did or if it goes well we'll just offer him an extension like Tuchel at Chelsea

Correct. A top manager can make average players look really good and can make really good players into superstars.

I voted for Potter originally, but changed it to Conte. He is the standout manager and we need someone very strong with a big personality to shake the players up. I don't care who he upsets or gets rid off. It also means Levy will have to spend money. If Paratici helps him out by getting free transfers in so be it. But we need a CF, a RWF, and a CM at a minimum.

yes well, I’m talking about the league positions etc under Poch, not the identity. I don’t see it as being feasibly repeatable, given the current strength of the other top clubs and how much finances they have to play with compared to us.
