Keep Malbranque on the left as the option with Bale, for starters.

A title contending team is still very premature, we need to get back to 5th first!

If your actually talking title contending, then from that team we are about 7-8 players short in my opinion. Top four, if everyone is playing well, top keeper and top midfielder

We are only about 3 - 4 players short, or think of it another way, take manusa 3 best players and stick them in our current team, that's a title challenging side.

I love these threads.

GK - Will Robbo sort it sufficiently to be a premiership winning GK, actually contributing at the level of a champion? Will Cerny stick around, given that he hasn't been offered a new contract? I think on balance that both seem less likely to happen than not happen, so 2 new goalies needed

RB - Gunter: Obviously this is based on the practically nothing we've seen so far but I think he would do to be a Championship winning reserve RB, but only so long as the first choice didn't get a long term injury. We can't count on that, but do have to let him develop anyway. Chimbonda's alleged strife with the club makes him too unreliable to contribute premiership winning performances all season, if he even sticks around, so new 1st choice RB needed

CB - As someone has been saying in the transfer rumours forum, Woodgate and King only count as one CB, if you make an assessment based on their histories. Neither Kaboul or Dawson really seem ready yet to my eyes to be the other half of a premiership champion CB pairing, but may be ok as reserves. possibly. The club may think they have sorted our 1st choice pairing, but really 1st choice CB needed

LB - If Gilberto really is signed, I reckon he and Bale could be a dream ticket, at least on a par with any other one-two LB punch in the league. Bale isn't good enough defensively yet I feel, and won't be till at least the season after next, so in the absence of any Gilberto announcement from the club, new 1st choice LB needed

RW - Lennon is good enough, i think, and improving all the time. But what if he got injured? There's noone to come in but Steed and Boateng. New backup RW needed, possibly

CM - How long do we wait for JJ to play at the level of Fabregas/Lampard/Carrick/Gerrard/Scholes/Essien? Is it ever going to happen? None of our others have yet got close to showing the all round games of players of the standard of those others. Maybe by development, maybe by purchasing, we need massive improvement in this position, and 2 effectively new CMs by hook or by crook

LW Steed vs Rosicky vs Giggs vs Cole/Maloda vs Kewell/whoever they play there these I can't be arsed to watch......you would be very hard pushed to say he's definitely better than any of the above. Not sure, but my personal opinion is just about new 1st choice LW needed

CF sorted
So long as Berba stays...

Minimum of 3 players required; goalie and 2 central midfielders and these two must be from the very top drawer.

Sorry, but I think this is down to the manager, more than just the players. Look at the players Ramos has inheirted from Jol, taken them from relegation candidates, and losers at home to getafe, to Carling cup finalists, matching United at old Trafford in the FA cup. I believe this guy is a motivator, add Woodgate, Gilberto, someone like Tiago (I am sure Ramos blessed this move) and in the summer a class keeper and maybe a real class left winger, it's enough to challenge. Just IMO, but if you look at Henry at Barcelona, he's playing crap, under Wenger he was unplayable.. Adabayor was average at monaco, under Wenger he looks as good as Henry, if our Juande has he same motivationable talent, I put my faith in the the man (Ramos)...... COYS

im agreeing with the pessimists here. Lennon, King and Berba are title contending, and perhaps Keano is as well, but Berba is either leaving, or if he continues on current form, won't even count.

Nobody else is a title contender.

But yes, we are those question marks short off coming 4th.

if you add a few more stars some of the mid-level guys will get better and be more effective. you dont need a man that can carry the team at every position all the time.

This is a top4 squad:
Foster
Alnwick

Hutton
Lee.Y.P

King
Woodgate
Dawson
Kaboul

Gilberto
Bale

Lennon
Taarabt

Jenas
Tainio

Tiago
Zokora

Malbranque
Downing

Berbatov
Keane
Bent
Defoe

so i'd say about 3-4 players away from a truely quality squad!
