We've got Sarr coming in too, haven't we? Not sure how ready he'd be, but should bolster the CM options too.

See.

Just after a chat yesterday about continually seeing this guys name pop up, yet so many people seem to think he's too weak for the league, not great in the air etc.

Apparently a lovely passer of the ball, but that's seemingly it?
From what I can tell, Villareal have one of the best defenses in the league, and he's playing as one of two.

As one of three, I reckon he'd do OK

The biggest question is whether he's made for the prem. More so than ever before I think this needs to be considered.

Don't get me wrong, I totally see that. But if we're after a new CM, and I can see why we would be, I'd like it to be someone who can really take us forward.

I'm not sure Philipps is that guy, albeit being home grown would be a bonus.

Phillips is a sensational presser of the ball, and can pass from deep. He's a Brozovic type player for Conte. Would be fantastic. But as I've said before main CM target will be Mckennie.

Also aren’t the rumours of Leeds wanting £60m for him? I think I’d rather see us spend the money elsewhere.

Oh agreed. Wouldnt pay that. More if Leeds went down (looking less likely) he wouldve been available for £30mish

Would probably be canny of Paratici to look for defenders that can play in a back 3 and a back 2. Conte is not going to be here forever lets face it. We need to be flexible with our squad for any outcome. We don't want to be in the reverse situation of Royal fitting into Nuno's plans and not Conte's.

At what point does Home grown become a problem? I’m all for upgrading the likes of Rodin and winks, but at some point we have to buy or develop some young British talent don’t we?

Yes we do, but we are not so much in trouble compared to the last years. Esp. as we most likely shift out Ndombele, Lo Celso and Gollini and some others are probably leaving (Sanchez, Bergwijn) we probably have some space.

Currently we can plan with (international comp rules)

1 Lloris
2 Doherty
3 Reguilon
4 Emerson
5 Romero
6 Dier
7 Davies
8 Bentancur
9 Hojbjerg
10 Lucas
11 Kulusevski
12 Son
13 Bryan(?)
14 Bergwijn(?)
15 Sanchez(?)
16
17

Would certainly help to get a HG back up keeper in.

He’s a great passer. The pass for the last goal in this clip is *chefs kiss* superb. Edit: Burnley v Leeds last season

Imagine having him, Skipp, Hojbjerg and Bentancur pushing each other for selection, and rotating so they never get burnt out.

Btw not sure juve let mckennie go so easily

Kalvin is the perfect Conte midfielder.. Great technical ability and composure on the ball, one of the best long passers in the league, one of the best midfielders in the league defensively (tackles, interceptions, pressures), and most of all a clear leader and warrior on the pitch.

Not to mention — strong dead ball delivery, homegrown, Premier League proven.

Would be our first choice if we signed him imo, but as others mentioned, it’s a question of a) would we be Kalvin’s first choice and more importantly b) do we have the money for him / is upgrading central midfield enough of a priority to spend a significant amount of the budget on him.

Best marking on Kane this season came from Phillips, shadowed him the entire match and Kane couldn't do anything. Kane wasn't in this Godly form then though but still. Can even play in CB position in case of injuries, and do it very well. Since he's a Leeds fan he probably won't move to United and most other teams have their midfield sorted, and whoever doesn't will go for Rice. Would be a great time to go for him but doubt we spend that much money on one player when we "have" to pay for Romero and Kulusevski in Summer. Leeds won't do loan+obligation to buy, they will probably want money ASAP to support Marsch and not get relegated next season. Would be a 10/10 signing.

Whilst I agree with the view that CM might not be a priority, and that upgrading the key gaps in the squad are essential (LCB, RWB,CF) I think we have to push on if we want to challenge.
But I accept the budget is unlikely to be unlimited.
id be prepared to accept some smarter wheeling &dealing to make the money go round in other positions if it meant we could get him in to replace winks. (Maybe even throw winks in as a sweetener for Leeds?)

For example
Johnstone gk
Spence rwb
Dybala/belotti
Pau Torres (ina swap for lo celso)
Eriksen

It’s not perfect but the squad would be better balanced throughout.
I feel like rice is likely to leave west ham in the summer and whilst I doubt we’ve got the pull to get him, Philips is the next best CM available. Would hate to see him end up at a rival instead.

Not against the idea of Kalvin Phillips but unless Leeds get relegated, the amount of money they would ask for him would be exorbitant. Alternatively, we could try for Konrad Laimer at Leipzig ( 24 years old/will have a year left on his contract in June 2022/ would be a great fit in Conte's system) Florian Grillitsch at Hoffenheim ( 26 years old/will be a free agent in June 2022/ can play as a CM/DM/CB and is very comfortable with passing, ball-progression and defensive work)

I can totally see why we’d be interested in laimer as he looks impressive both visually and statistically but I’m less convinced by grillitsch. More so, I don’t get why no one else has gone for him in the last couple of seasons. If he’s been bossing it in the bundesliga at hoffenheim then it’s not like a PL club (or just a bigger German club) wouldn’t have been able to buy him at a good price. So what’s been missed with him? Is there anything he is lacking that these (impressive) stats don’t reveal?

Affter watching the two german teams tonight, some real talent that would fit perfectly with Conte's tactics.

Frankfurt

N'Dicka - LCB
Kostic - LWB

RB Leipzig

Gvardiol - LCB
Angelino - LWB
Laimer - CM
Olmo - 10
Nkunku - ST

Angelino would be an excellent signing. Him and Gvardiol on the left would be a dream come true.

If we sign only those two, we could live with Doherty (backup Emerson) on the right, and it would still be transformational.
