Why do people have to be so condescending on here at times?

Even though we failed to beat some of the relegation strugglers, we often completely outplayed them and were unable to convert our chances into goals. Against WBA and Norwich this season, we have put in two very poor performances. Therein lies the difference.

I thought WBA was alright. Norwich wasn't great - but very poor is a stretch, even for the hardened pessimist.

Cheer up mate.

I really do think we're panicing too soon. Last season we had Modric and got beaten by Norwich and QPR (now I've used these as we feel these are teams we should be beating) We lost away to Newcastle and most of us felt we should have won that. We have now drawn 2 games and the sky is falling

I know most of you feel negative and that could just be a defence mechanism.................hell I do it too!! but come on guys, please stop the booing, please stop the Levy out and remember these players are young and I'm sure some will feel the pressure from all the negative stuff they read on twitter or even on here, so tell me how are you supporting your team??

Great post.

Why do you assume that a deal could be sorted out before we knew how much we would get for Modric and VDV ? Given we apparently went back to Porto as soon as Modric was sold and then upped our offer after VDV went it's not beyond the bounds of possibility that the two things are related. More to the point I would guess that in terms of wages we could only accommodate Moutinho after VDV and Modric were off the wages bill. You're also making the strange assumption that Porto when confronted with our initial enquiry told us a figure that was set in stone and then never budged from it, something which I doubt very much.

There seems to be a belief that we only got in contact with Porto on the last day; it should be obvious that negotiations must have been in progress for weeks, because we certainly didn't get them to knock €10m off their reported asking price in a ten-minute phone chat on Friday morning. The protracted negotiations over Modric hardly helped matters, either.

Last season we made £29m profit from player trading, which gives strength to the belief that Levy, along with just about everyone else in the country, was convinced Harry was nailed-on for the England job and wasn't going to invest in players a new manager might not like. To that can be added something in excess of £60m from this summer's sales. In theory, that made about £90m available for new signings. We spent £50m, with potentially another £4.5m on Lloris, which conveniently left something around £40m for two big signings.

Any reason why POTL's debrief isn't in the RO?

If someone would be kind enough to copy and paste it in here I will happily put it in the RO forum. Or anyone can create a thread in the RO forum and I will approve it.

POTL on COYS - Debrief

GK- Lloris- Achieved
CM- Moutinho- Player wages stopped us getting it over the line
CF- Remy was the one we ended up going for, Chelsea tried to purchase the player, at this point negotiations ended with Spurs and was too late to resurrect.
Player 4- Was Dempsey, spent all day trying to do the Moutinho deal and when Remy wasn't going to happen attention turned to Dempsey. Knew he was available all day and in the end made the decision to go for him as he can play Midfield/AM/CF. By no means was one of our targets, but similarly as with Rafa he was an option that became available and hopefully will be a good addition to the squad.

In the end the club believes we have bought some excellent players in Vertonghen, Lloris, Dembele, Dempsey, Sigurdsson and Adebayor. The issue we now have is no direct Luka replacement which translates to Dembele playing deeper than he has in the past. But the kid is super talented and has moved back from a CF originally to an attacking midfielder to a cm under Jol- let's hope he can do well for us.

You can all now pass judgment on when you feel we should of signed players, why did we leave it late, etc etc. The main factor we have had is many of the players we have gone for did not want to sign, and to sign would only accept astronomical wages.

This is the squad we have now until Jan, so let's all try and get behind the team and support the manager because it isn't going to change for the immediate future.

Just a word on formations and players, Ade hasn't been starting because he has had zero pre season and isn't anywhere near fit enough, he is on a two week intensive programme. Sandro as well has had a busy summer and is tiring out quickly, the only thing that will benefit him is rest. Hopefully we will be able to field what is near to our strongest 11 vs. Reading.

COYS.

If you feel condescended to then that's your issue. My post was a throwaway comment on how context and perspective changes over time.

So suck it. :woot:

Good, succinct article on the mouts debacle:

Spurs Fans, don`t be naïve, Tottenham were never seriously in for Moutinho. The player is over 25 years old and would cost £25m+ and has little sell on value. This is simple not a Levy signing. The bid we made yesterday was a PR exercise to keep fans and manager happy, and it`s not the first time Levy has done this.

If we were genuinely in for Moutinho, we would have lodged the bid weeks ago. A player`s value doesn`t go down on the last day of the window, it increases and Levy knows clubs are less willing to sell without time to get a replacement. Levy did the same trick back when he made an audacious bid for Augero. There was literally no chance club or player was going to accept the bid, but to the fans it was a sure fire sign Spurs were willing to pay top dollar for an established player. If this was a genuine bid, surely we would follow it up in the next window with another big bid for Augero or another top striker, right? Alas the next one through the door was Adebeyor on a free loan deal.

Levy`s transfer policy is very simple. If a player is over 25 but going for less than market value due to a club wanting to sell or is close to being out of contract, he will buy them (VdV, Ade, Dempsey). If a player is young and has a potentially large sell on value, he will invest (Modric, Bale, Sandro etc etc). It always surprises me seeing fans getting excited by the thought of players like Moutinho or Llorente, why would our chairman break a habit of a life time? Fans need to get real, whilst Levy is in charge we will never be operating at the top end of the transfer market.

The person I feel sorry for the most out of all this is AVB. Levy had obviously promised him investment. Instead we have weakened our team and actually made a profit on player sales. You cannot say AVB has got one of his targets, he has obviously been consulted with all the transfers but most of these players were linked with us prior to him taking charge. Although there were other reason behind Redknapp being sacked, it`s clear to me one of the main reason was that Levy can now play football manager and have a lot more say in the transfer market. He has basically gone and got himself a yes man, something that Harry would never have done. And although, Harry`s transfer policy was questionable to say the least, you can`t say it didn`t work after a 4th,5th, 4th run in the league.

I`m not going to say it`s a disaster because we have got some good players in Demspey, Dembele and Vertongen, but I feel AVB needed some big investment to fill the void losing Modric has made and to move us forward from the good work Redknapp done. I really hope things start clicking soon because the media are already out to get us and even the most level headed of Spurs fans won`t accept anything less than challenging for the Top 4 this year. When you look at our rivals, Arsenal, Newcastle, Everton and Liverpool, you feel this was probably the best chance to establish a Top 4 spot.

The windows now shut, and we can get back to supporting the players we have. Onwards and upwards? I`m not sure, but at least the bloody windows shut at last!

Spottage onage.

Ok Cheers.

I think that's just the standard modus operandi for Huddlestone, it's just to someone like Redknapp or Jol he was "just a big lad".

I think the computer geeks thing is just perhaps a more modern approach is being taken. Compared to Redknapp's methods I would imagine a stop watch would be technologically advanced.

The modern approach is obviously working then. Cant run but still gets on. Maybe they should turn off the laptops and go and watch the actual football. Football and footballers are pretty simple. It's just that some people like to try and complicate it because they feel like there should be something more.

So PoTL says we took so long because the players we went for didn't want to sign?!

Well fuck me, maybe try some others instead without going down to a player we didn't particularly want as a target.

If he wasn't a target did the manager even want him?! Have to wonder if potential profit is being put ahead of the pitch. It all feels a bit wrong.

And how long were we pursuing Remy? Who didn't sign for fucking Chelsea as it happens.

Bit of a joke really.

I stopped reading after he said the bid was a PR exercise, you don't ask for an extension on a PR exercise nor does your manager phone the player up asking him to reduce his demands an hour before the window shuts if it was a 'PR Exercise'. It sounds like someone trying to use another negative to beat our chairman with.

It was a Levy special. If he wanted the guy he would have got him earlier, he knew who he was dealing with.

I know 'these things take time', but for fuck sake how long does it take to find out if a player's interested in coming really?! I mean come on...what the fuck like?!

At what price? Do we just pay whatever they want, or should we try and negotiate to get a more attractive / affordable fee?
